Vancouver Olympic Media Updates

Just to be clear, that 121 hours represents the amount of ORIGINAL coverage on NBC. It doesn't count the re-airs. You're probably right that it will likely be a similar programming schedule to Torino. Obviously the main difference will be Late Night since that won't be the "Olympic Tonight Show" and will likely have event coverage and/or live coverage of medal ceremonies and such. We know Universal Sports' role in the coverage (which I think is a great addition, especially for a West Coast Olympics). I can only assume their coverage counts into the 835 total hours NBC mentioned since that's a much larger number than they broadcast from Torino. I do have info from the cable networks that USA is scaling back on their coverage this time around. They're only broadcasting 41 hours of coverage, all in the daytime. Below is the USA Network schedule. The times I got off the website, the sports they are covering right now are only guesses based on the schedule. What this does for MSNBC and CNBC is anyone's best guess, but it won't be like 2006 when USA Network was "the home of Team USA"..

I thought about an Olympic hockey channel, but unlike basketball and soccer, there almost doesn't need to be 1. NBCU can easily cover all of the games on their various channels (as opposed to the basketball and soccer games where only a small handful of non-team USA games would have otherwise made it onto television. As for USA Network, I think they've been scaling back their sports coverage in general. In the past couple of years, they've lost the first 2 rounds of the Masters and also their big share of US Open Tennis. Couple that with the fact that Versus will be coming on board as an NBC-affiliated cable outlet and you're probably right that USA could be gone altogether for Olympics coverage by 2012.

Don't know what the rest of Vancouver will look like. I would assume that all of the hockey and curling gets covered live, although I think it will be more like Salt Lake and Sydney where coverage is based more on times (i.e. MSNBC had the afternoon coverage, CNBC in the evening) as opposed to Torino where all the hockey was on MSNBC (or CNBC on the weekends) and USA Network was "the home of team USA." The biggest question I have for Vancouver is will NBC commit to showing everything live in primetime. Which is to say, when the US has a curling match at 7pm PT (10pm ET) or there's a hockey game at 4:30pm PT (7:30pm ET), will those events all still get covered on television or will they be relegated to the Internet. It's no coincidence that the United States' games in hockey and curling largely avoid primetime, but it remains to be seen if non-US games especially in hockey will still get shown on TV in primetime.

^ is it just me or the Opening Ceremony will be pre-recorded/edited and won't be broadcasted live? Being in the same timezone, that makes no sense. It says that on King 5 Seattle (NBC affiliate), the Opening Ceremony will run from 9-12...three hours after it starts.

And with reports of NBC expecting to lose $200-million from the 2010 Games, I'm worried about the possibility of craptacular coverage.

Just took a look at the new NBC Vancouver 2010 TV schedule--still studying it over. I'll delve more in depth regarding that (and of CTV's plans which are currently taking shape) in the coming days. But what I will say in advance among them is the omission of Telemundo this time around from Vancouver. It seems like MSNBC has become the de facto Olympic Hockey Channel (and you're right Quaker2001, there may not be enough to fill for one to create).

I guessed right about how many TV hours Rogers Sportsnet will broadcast in its Olympic TV debut for Vancouver 2010: it's going to be 306 hours with an 18 hour average. OLN will air 75 hours, and, being true to its full name Outdoor Life Network, its coverage centers, you can assume, biathlon, cross country and nordic combined skiing, and some bobsledding, skeleton, luge, and alpine skiing.

The French language breakdown (more details later):

TQS (now V)--284 hours (ALL LIVE AND HD averaging 16.5 hours daily)

RDS--354 hours (ALL LIVE AND HD averaging 21 hours daily)

RDS Info Sports--101 hours (averaging 6 hours daily)

APTN--214 hours (three hours daily in French, total daily average is 13 hours)

So the French language portion of the Canadian Olympic TV coverage in the CTVglobemedia-Rogers Olympic Media Consortium totals at least 800 hours. I'll dicsuss more about this later. It wasn't mentioned in the English language portion of yesterday's press release, but in the French language one also released yesterday revealed that RDS announced the sports network will send a personnel of 240 to Vancouver.

Das Erste's Olympic website is now up and running complete with its Olympic radio and TV schedule for all of us, especially the Germans among us here, to critique about.

I was thinking the same way; everybody east of the Pacific time zone will get the OC live, I think--definitely those in the Eastern and Central ones.

From 1964-2002, St. John's CJON was a full CTV affiliate, Newfoundland Labrador's only connection to the network before A Atlantic's arrival. Before then starting in 1954, it was for the CBC. Now it's the independent station under the Newfoundland Television independent banner. It still gets the CTV News shows with Global programming.

The first thing that strikes me about the schedule is that there's no rhyme or reason to some of it. When NBC did their first Winter Olympics in 2002, you could reasonably expect that most days MSNBC would be on at a certain time (usually from 1pm to 6pm) and CNBC would be on from 6pm usually until Midnight. This time it's a little more scattered and there isn't so much a "home of team USA" setup. Still, it is nice to see all the hockey and a huge amount of curling all over the cable networks, which includes a lot of team Canada Curling matches.

Ojojojojojojojojojojojojojojojojojojoj! Sverige Television releases today its 2010 Winter Olympic Games TV schedule from SVT1, SVT2, and SVT24 , its SVT OS commentating crew, and its Olympic Internet programming schedule. Next week, I'll discuss more.

A Ceske Televizi Vancouver Olympic

featuring the notable medal contenders from the Czech Republic like Nikola Sudova, the Czech Republic hockey team, Martina Sablikova, Michal Novotny, Tomas Kraus, Sarka Zahrobska, Tomas Verner, Katerina Novotna, and Lukas Bauer. CT2 and its digital sports channel CT4 will broadcast the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics starting February 12th.

Today marks the official announcment from France Televisions on their Vancouver Winter Olympic Games coverage, something that I alluded to a month ago with France TV's Olympic advertising guide. The basics are 200 hours will be shown live on France 2, France 3, and France 4 which doesn't seem like much these days in a lot of the bigger markets to the Winter Olympics--it does comply with the EBU-IOC TV hours agreement for the Winter Olympics. But those 200 hours are also included in the 800 hours of online coverage from France TV's website. I copied and pasted the France TV JO d'Hiver 2010 Vancouver schedule below:

In addition, France TV made public today in a Paris press conference its sportscasting team that includes Philippe Candeloro, Nelson Monfort, Corrine Niogret, Laurent Luyat, Gerard Holtz, Jean-Francois Lauville, and Sylvain Guillaume.

I-Cable has some Olympic plans for Hong Kong residents in second foray into the Winter Olympics following Turin, that resulted in aboost in viewership, but this is its first exclusive on TV, Internet, and mobile phone platforms. Olympic programming will be shown on eight different TV channels, specifically for the Olympics, and on i-Cable's website with direct feeds, analysis from expert comentators, and athletes' interviews. TV promos are currently running on Cable TV's channels and website to promote the Games to attract advertisers and sports fans alike. No advertisers, as I write this, has signed up for sponsorship in the total coverage, but i-Cables plans to tailor to sponsors with advertising packages in various sports throughout the year. This is going to be big for i-Cable with rights to the Wold Cup, Asian Games, and EPL coverage later this year.

Got an e mail from Sky TV about the New Zealand coverage for Vancouver 2010. They won't be giving full and detailed information until the Feb issue of Skywatch is released at the end of January, but the points they were able to give me...

* External commentators will be used for all of the events (much like TVNZ has done using the CBC, BBC commentary) except the Opening/Closing ceremonies. For those 2 events they will be using Sky commentators , this team will be headed by Steven McIvor.

* The opening/closing ceremonies will be screened uninterupted on SkySport 4, however there will be ad breaks on the Prime TV coverage (the free to air partner of Sky's Olympic coverage)

* Prime TV will have 12hrs of coverage a day

* Sky will have 4 24hr dedicated Olympic channels (sky sport 4,5,6 & &) on channels 131-134. These will be provided at no extra cost to Sky Sport subscribers.

* Sky sport 1,2 & 3 will also show a 2hr highlights show every night at 7pm

* Sky/Primes coverage appears to have John West as it's broadcast sponser.

It has come to my attention that SolarTV, the sister free-to-air channel of Solar Sports, will broadcast the Winter Olympics in Vancouver alongside its brother sports channel. Perhaps they will have extensive coverage like Solar Sports (like what they did in Beijing - SolarTV was known at that time as C/S-RPN). If anyone has more info I would be appriciated.

This good news to me (I don't have Solar Sports, remember!) was evidenced by looking at SolarTV, which at that time is showing a live game the Philippine basketball league, at which point I have noticed the Vancouver 2010 countdown bug at one corner of the screen. (The bug is the same one that is displayed on Solar Sports.)

Probably they will show the opening ceremony live... (But the NBA might block SolarTV's way.)

Got oodles of more Olympic media coverage news and thoughts coming for you in the coming days from Canada, United States, Brazil, Germany, Czech Republic, Estonia, Romania, among others. But today here I want to focus on Poland's portion from TVP. Five channels will be involved out of the TVP family: TVP1 and TVP2 will broadcast 130 hours together with a focus on the most popular winter sports to the Polish audience and of course the Polish Olympians. TVP Info, TVP HD, and TVP Sport round out the others. The day's summary will air during the morning with repeat footage at night aired from 12 to 16 Polish time. Good Morning Vancouver will come on at 17:20 to 18:30. By contrast, TVP Sport gets to focus on team sports like hockey and curling, never mind ice hockey has a strong Polish fan base and attracts a lot of viewers, for the first time on the channel on such a scale. But as posters at Media2.pl note, decisions from TVP are often strange and expect the unexpected.

I predicted that this week we will get more official info regarding the BBC's Vancouver plans. So yesterday, there is new information released. A schedule has yet to appear but we will see based on what the BBC will do. Vancouver continues a Winter Olympic streak that started from Squaw Valley in 1960. For Britain, I just can't see anybody, not even Sky Sports, to operate the Olympics like they do, even in the future like that world-renown extensive major institution. Once again, like it does so well in recent Olympics, access to info, videos, news, records, and stats will come through TV, Internet, BBC iPlayer, cell (mobile) phone, red button, and radio. BBC HD will take the footage and coverage from BBC Two and improve on it. BBC Two will produce the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics with 160 hours, as stated many posts ago (with an additional 13 hours on BBC HD). Some other stuff:

--the red button option will offer a selection on extra live action and interactive selections totaling up to 2000 hours that will also streamed on BBC Sport

--BBC News Channel, BBC World News, and 5 Live will offer the latest news and issues from Vancouver, Whistler, Cypress, and Creekside

--digital TV viewers will get up to six streams through the red button (four live) for extensive coverage of the 86 events. Everyday during the Games on BBC Red Player and the BBC iPlayer, a 30-minute highlight show encapsulates the day's goings-on at 6.00 and 8.00, respectively

--representing BBC Radio 5 Live in Vancouver will be Vassos Alexander and Eleanor Oldroyd. On his Breakfast press desk there in Vancouver, Alexander will report the news with a daily roundup from 6.05 to 6.15. Eleanor will report from the Drive. Radio coverage, not surpringly, will focus on the British Winter Olympians like Team GB curling and skeleton teams. Chemmie Alcott, the Kerrs figure skating duo, the two-women's bobsled, and Zoe Gillings

--online will sport four live interactive streams with plenty of room for that ever-popular live text messaging and emails from readers and video highlights to catch up with, blog, photos, medal tables, competitor bios, and behind-the-scenes audio and video through BBC Sports' website, which attracts 10 million users weekly

--BBC Mobile will offer live streaming of the Olympic action daily plus access to the best on-demand Winter Olympic clips each day, such as the Winter Olympics daily wrapup

--Unlike NBC but more like CTV, the Beeb will go live in everything in their coverage including both ceremonies hosted Hazel Barker and Sue Irvine. Those two will co-host a daily highlights in the early afternoon from the best of the overnight action with Claire Balding fronts the two-hour primetime coverage on skeleton, snowboarding, and alpine skiing. A more extensive array of live Olympic footage comes after BBC Newsnight from 11.20-5, hosted by Irvine

--Robin Cousins (celebrating his 30th anniversary of his Lake Placid gold), Rhona Martin, Wilf O'Reilly, Steve Cram, Ed Leigh, Hugh Porter, Kerrin Lee-Gartner, Sir Matthew Pisant, Brent Pope, Paul Dickenson, Colin Bryce, Matt Chilton, Rob Walker, Bob Ballard, Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes and Sue Barker all headline the BBC Vancouver Olympic sportscasting team. Kinda interesting to see middle distance legend Cram calling curling. But I guess curling does take distance in terms of length of time.

Estonia's ETV releases its Vancouver 2010 Olympic TV schedule last week. ETV1 will offer the overwhelming bulk of the broadcast from Vancouver between it and its digital TV station ETV2. The latter, its first Winter Olympics since its existence, will only air several hours a day with some hockey, nordic combined, ski cross, cross country skiing, and biathlon.

Before the ARD/ZDF 2010 Vancouver Olympic TV guide (pdf versions) gets linked, it must be pointed out with some more info regarding the coverage, particularly with the digital channels taking part, EinsFestival and ZDFinfokanal. EinsFestival's focus centers on men's and women's ice hockey, speed skating, and curling from start to finish live from 21-6.30 Middle European Time absent of commentary, interviews, or analysis. ZDFinfokanal will take care of the "younger" sports that are grabbing attention: snowboarding, aerials, moguls, ski cross, short track, and skeleton--sports that Germans aren't traditional powers in and aren't serious contenders in Vancouver, which is why you won't see them on ZDF or ARD proper. Those too will come minus voices other than the soundtrack at the venue. ZDFinfokanal's turn comes at 20.15 daily. Katarina Witt hosts a daily show called "Postcards From Vancouver" as she brings her daily thoughts about the Games and Vancouver when ARD does its coverage. More thoughts will come later, but get ready for the ARD/ZDF Olympia 2010 Vancouver TV guide. In past Olympic TV guides they offer, it can hard to find and read exactly what time your favorite event came on so you can watch, particularly on ZDF's turn. But it seems they'll jump from event to event in a short amount of time instead of going through the whole thing with their 221. However, they cleared that glitch up, it appears. Das Erste gets 9 days of broadcast starting with the Opening Ceremony and ZDF has 8 days with the Closing Ceremony to end it all. Also, you'll notice that none of the Olympic programming from EinsFestival and ZDFinfokanal portions appear on the TV guide, which is a shame; they're a part of it all.

Ceska Televize recently announced its its Vancouver Tv plans under the ZOH 2010 banner . For the first time instead of CT1 and CT2, it'll be CT2 and CT4 getting involved live and in also in HD. CT2 will take 18 live hours devoted to Vancouver with everything starting at 2am on Saturday February 13th with the Opening Ceremony, and CT4 will go 24 hours a daily. Jaromira Bozak will be at the Czech House in Vancouver interviewing with Czech athletes there, and Jakub Bazant appears from the IBC headquarters. Vancouver Velky serves as a review show. Bazant also hosts Postcards From Vancouver, a show that will send the images and stories of Vancouver, BC, and Canada in the Olympic atmosphere to Czech TV audiences. Czech audiences won't miss their Olympian stars doing their thing. Of course, there's massive coverage centering on the Czech Republic Olympic ice hockey team, including before and after games, even the women's games.

CT2's and CT4's Vancouver Olympic TV Guide

Storian Stoian and Marian Stoenica host a daily Vancouver preview show on TV Romania. Speaking of which, TVR announced today it will air 300 hours live (and some recorded) of their coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics on both TVR 1 and TVR 2 with an array of 15 sports. Breakdown between the two goes like this: TVR 1 has plans to air live daily primetime (Romania time) coverage, mostly in the previous day's highlights with live Olympic sports programming from 21-9.30. TVR 2 is all-encompassing with skiing, hockey, speed skating, figure skating, bobsled, curling, skeleton, short track, ski jumping, and luge dominating the programming starting at 20.00. Daily Olympic news, if I translated the news right, with a daily preview comes on 17-18.30 on TVR 1 and TVR 2 gets its version at 14-17. And it's all entirely on HD 24 hours a day on TVR HD transmitted live. And TVR got its own specially dedicated Olympic website. Get to know the TVR Olympic broadcast team while you're at it!

TVR the Romanian national network will have over 300 hours of Olympic coverage on 3 channels (including TVR HD). They will have Olympic coverage from 21:00 to 9:30 the next day. Their Olympic website was just launched, looks like they borrowed ALOT of visuals from the Vancouver2010 site.

Alot of the features on the website are not working yet: Medals counts, contests, results, world records, etc, but check it out.
