Third round – Rio de Janeiro eliminated

Final Round – Cape Town eliminated and Minneapolis-St. Paul becomes the host of the XXI Olympiad in 2016.

you're completely delusional to think that Minnie will beat out NYC, Chicago and San Fran, and then to think that Toronto, Delhi, Hamburg and Madrid would be beaten out by Bangkok, Cape Town, Minnie, Istanbul and Rio.

some liberties and wishful thinking is alright, in your class its complete and outter delusion

Joseph,

I have some bad news to tell you, but Minneapolis-St. Paul is not going to be the USOC nomination for the 2016. I believe that either Chicago or New York City will have a much better chance of hosting getting nominated for the Summer Olympics than Minneapolis-St. Paul because NY and CHI are much more internationally recognized. Although I am for sure that Minneapolis-St. Paul could pull off a great Summer Olympics, it will not be occuring in 2016.

New Delhi would be an interesting Olympic host.  The city has made quite a few civic improvements over the years and more are on the way.  How New Delhi does with the 2010 Commonwealth Games and how their 2014 Asian Games bid turns out will have a lot to do with New Delhi's chances.  If the Commonwealth Games are a success I could see New Delhi using 2016 as a test run with a real eye on winning either 2020 or 2024.

A Summer Olympics in India would be an iteresting two weeks, but i'm thinking that a Winter Olympics in the foothills of Himalayas would be even better.

I remember looking into this _ trouble is, India really only has two capable resorts, Gulmarg (I think that waas it) and something else. And they're both situated in Kashmir, which is usually the epicentre of looming wars between India and Pakistan, and now is trying to reconstruct after the recent earthquake.

I think Delhi could be a surprise Summer Games bidder soon. With the Commonwealth and (probable) Asian games under its belt, and the economy growing, I'm sure next on its list would be the Olympics to lift national prestige. I'd see the next Asian Olympics as a tosss-up between Japan and India.

You all know I love lists...

Applicants

Rio de Janeiro, BRA

Cape Town, RSA

Prague, CZE

Istanbul, TUR

Havana, CUB

Guadalajara, MEX

St. Petersburg, RUS

Delhi, IND

Dubai, UAE

Chicago, USA

Short List

Rio de Janerio, BRA

Istanbul, TUR

St. Petersburg, RUS

Chicago, USA

Cape Town, RSA

Voting (Taking Place in Balboa, SPA with 110 IOC Members)

Round 1: 110

Rio de Janeiro, BRA---31

Chicago, USA---29

Cape Town, RSA---26

Istanbul, TUR---13

St. Petersburg, RUS---11

Round 2: 113

Rio de Janeiro, BRA---36

Chicago, USA---32

Cape Town, RSA---28

Istanbul, TUR---17

Round 3: 113

Chicago, USA---41

Rio de Janeiro, BRA---39

Cape Town, RSA---33

Round 4: 114

Rio de Janeiro, BRA---59

Chicago, USA---55

This sets up a America v. Canada v. Cape Town match for 2020, not to mention the eastern europeans. I chose Rio A) Because I think the IOC and the world will demand a "new" games after returning to the power London. I think people will say going from London to Chicago is not special nor exciting, Rio is though.

PS: What is with the sudden rise of these crazed Minneapolis supporters. I mean they are crazy, even in my book. MSP in 2016, yeah right, and I will become President...hmmm...well...maybe. (Just kidding, that would be impossible, due to age limits). But seriously, I really want Rio or Cape Town in 2016, over anyone, except Minneapolis, but we have already established that won't happen.

2016 is too early for New Delhi, but I'm sure in the 2030's India will get the Games.

In fact, 2016 will be a race between NYC-Tokyo-Rio, with a possible victory of Japan or the USA.  :)

For the 2016 Summer Olympics and the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, I believe this is going to be best competition where candidate cities from all over the world will put forth a bid for the Summer Olympic Games. For the 2016 Olympics, I see the continents of North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa all considering bids for the Summer Olympics, including cities both big and small. I can see between 20 and 30 cities consider bids and some of the cities (and continent) included:

1. Montreal, Quebec Canada (North America)

2. Toronto, Ontario Canada (North America)

3. Chicago, Illinois USA (North America)

4. New York City, NY USA (North America)

5. Los Angeles, CA USA (North America)

6. San Francisco, CA USA (North America)

7. Philadelphia, PA USA (North America)

8. Washington, DC – Baltimore, MD USA (North America)

9. Santiago, Chile (South America)

10. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (South America)

11. Buenos Aries, Argentina (South America)

12. Nairobi, Kenya (Africa)

13. Cape Town, South Africa (Africa)

14. Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Asia)

15. New Delhi, India (Asia)

16. Tokyo, Japan (Asia)

17. Rotterdam, Netherlands (Europe)

18. Madrid, Spain (Europe)

19. Moscow, Russia (Europe)

20. Rome, Italy (Europe)

21. Milan, Italy (Europe)

22. Istanbul, Turkey (Europe/Asia)

As of right now, I do not have a favorite candidate city but I am leaning towards Chicago, Nairobi, and/or Rio de Janeiro.

Hank,

If you're going to post in different colours, couldd you at least post in something easier on the eye than lime green on light grey.

Anyway, as per your list:

1. Montreal, Quebec Canada (North America) _ Nope, they don't even want to hear the world "Olympic" while they're still paying off 1976

2. Toronto, Ontario Canada (North America) _ I'm surprised they haven't made preliminary comments yet. This is their best  chance in ages

3. Chicago, Illinois USA (North America) _ Yes, a contender

4. New York City, NY USA (North America) _ Yes, a contender

5. Los Angeles, CA USA (North America) _ No, it's not time for their number three hosting yet.

6. San Francisco, CA USA (North America) _ Yes, a contender

7. Philadelphia, PA USA (North America) _ Yes, a contender

8. Washington, DC – Baltimore, MD USA (North America) _ Hmmm. I can't see it

9. Santiago, Chile (South America) _ Nope. That's not to say they couldn't do it, but the Chileans don't believe in it themselves

10. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (South America) _ They've got a bit on their hands with a probabe 2014 FIFA WC to host as well, but 2016 could be their best Olympics chance for a long time

11. Buenos Aries, Argentina (South America) _ Nope, not until they demonstrate they've really got their economy fixed

12. Nairobi, Kenya (Africa) _ No way! Take it from someone who's been there, Nairobi just is not capable.

13. Cape Town, South Africa (Africa) _ Yes, this could be their best shot at it.

14. Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Asia) _ Nope. The area's politically volatile, they have no Olympic tradition and they haven't expressed any interest or desire.

15. New Delhi, India (Asia) _ Too early. Could be a chance in the 2020s

16. Tokyo, Japan (Asia) _ The only declared bidder so far, will be one of the top contenders but to me a bit too close to Beijing 2008 to succeed this time around

17. Rotterdam, Netherlands (Europe) _ Nope. Any European bidder is just fooling themselves or setting themselves up forn 2020 or beyond

18. Madrid, Spain (Europe) _ Nope, see above

19. Moscow, Russia (Europe) _ Nope, see above

20. Rome, Italy (Europe) _ Nope, see above

21. Milan, Italy (Europe) _ Nope, see above

22. Istanbul, Turkey (Europe/Asia) _ It would do them better to sit this one out rather than make another pointless tilt straight away

I still see this one going to the Americas, probably North America. Unless the USA and Canada sit it out (and I think they'd be stupid if they did), in which case the window may just be open for a new frontiers bidder (Capetown or Rio).

If Cape Town wants to bid, that'll be the one I support from day one. Otherwise, it's about time South America got in on the action. Rio may have its environmental and social problems, but just close your eyes and dream. Can you visualise the Olympics in Rio? I can!

I certainly go along with roltel's assertions about the US cities. Washington DC? No chance. LA? Not again. Frisco? That could happen. I'd still like Boston to bid. As the east coast has never had the Games, I'd always prefer that over somewhere else, even Chicago. And Bostonians are probably a little more laid back than New Yorkers. Boston is America's Sydney.

It'll be the Americas and possibly Cape Town, but no-one else need apply, methinks.

4. New York City, NY USA (North America) _My FAVE

5. Los Angeles, CA USA (North America) _ they hosted before the IOC wants something new...NYC has  abetter case

6. San Francisco, CA USA (North America) _ nah NYC or the "pink"

games

7. Philadelphia, PA USA (North America) _ too boring

8. Washington, DC – Baltimore, MD USA (North America) _ NO WAYS

9. Santiago, Chile (South America) _ they would not make it past the technical phase

10. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (South America) _ people worry about cape town coping with 2010 SWC and maybe 2016 but with brazil 2014 SWC id be more worried...brazil are not the best when it comes to organization...

11. Buenos Aries, Argentina (South America) _ MY south american fave i doubt they would actually win.

12. Nairobi, Kenya (Africa) _ uhm which planet are you on??? have u been to nairboi...not even cairo can host the games....why not just my backyard....

13. Cape Town, South Africa (Africa) _ Yes, this could be their best shot at it. YAY but i think the money is better spent on a 2020 bid....but we would go all out for 2016 if we did decide to bid

14. Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Asia) _YES THE IOC loves giving the games to countries who send 5 athletes to the games and wont allow women to run around the stadia

15. New Delhi, India (Asia) _ they not coping with 2010 CWG preparations...

16. Tokyo, Japan (Asia) _ GOOD chance but IOC would be shooting itself in the foot

17. Rotterdam, Netherlands (Europe) _UHm NO

18. Madrid, Spain (Europe) _ 2028 for the earliest

19. Moscow, Russia (Europe) _ not again

20. Rome, Italy (Europe) _ nah

21. Milan, Italy (Europe) _ uhm no

22. Istanbul, Turkey (Europe/Asia) _maybe id like istanbul to bid again but they might just lose..

SHORT List assuming all bid....

TORONTO

RIO

ISTANBUL

TOKYO

NYC

what a tough group id say...Toronto - perfect host VS NYC - amazing games in amazing city...RIO - new frontiers fiesta BIG PARTY...IStanbul--time to go to the middle east??? Tokyo----will make large investments!!!

Guam has its own NOC.  :wwww:

Yeah, but they'd have to work with the USOC for logistics, funding AND most importantly, access to sponsors.  Plus they would need fed money for security, etc.
