Sir Rols Posted December 17, 2022 Report Posted December 17, 2022 (edited) As much as my sympathies are with Ukraine, this is probably the correct choice FIFA denies Zelenskyy request to have message broadcast at World Cup final Anyway, I’m sure the organisers would have wanted equal time for a cause closer to their heart Backing Palestinians at World Cup, Qatar takes aim at pro-normalization neighbors Actually, what’s the betting that there’ll be pro-Palestinian flags waving within the crowd at he final? Not that I’m also not sympathetic to the Palestine cause, but the hypocrisy of clamping down firmly on LGBTQ Pride flags, t-shirts and armbands, while allowing the Palestinian flag to be waved with gay abandon throughout the tournament is striking. AustralianFan Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 Calls have been made prior to and during the event for the parties to compensate workers, plus the families of the dead and injured labourers, who have been working on infrastructure since Qatar was awarded the World Cup in 2010. Groups such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Equidem and FairSquare have pleaded again for the FIFA Legacy Fund to be opened up to these workers. Quote
Sir Rols Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 (edited) I missed the match - woke up too late - but I guess it’s honours shared: Messi lifts the Cup and Mbappe the Golden Boot. And it’s on to North America… and I can go back to my mascots sig! Edited December 18, 2022 by Sir Rols Quote
Sir Rols Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 And talking about honours shared… this still means no country has won more than one WC in the 21st century. Quote
Palette86 Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 Congratulations Argentina. Their 2nd goal was just amazing. BTW, why did he wear black brand-new costume? It looks like traditional robe of middle east. 1 Quote

AustralianFan Posted December 19, 2022 Report Posted December 19, 2022 “Qatar organisers have claimed that there have been three deaths related to work on constructing stadiums, retracting comments earlier in the tournament by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy chief executive secretary general Hassan Al-Thawadi that "an estimated 400 to 500 migrant workers died as a result of work on projects related to the tournament." “Campiagners have rubbished this figure and accuse of Qatar of brushing the deaths of thousands of migrants under the carpet by classing them as occurring from "natural causes". "There has to be an analysis, as independent an investigation as possible, and it's a responsibility we in football have to do that," Klaveness said, as reported by TV2.” Quote
Bear Posted December 19, 2022 Report Posted December 19, 2022 finally it is over. may FIFA (and other sporting bodies) learn their lesson (doubt it) and never award their event to a country that does not respect them or the game in the future. Quote

Alexjc Posted December 19, 2022 Report Posted December 19, 2022 Considering the massive decade long controversy of Qatar 2022... It was actually a good tournament. I did love the upsets of some really big teams going home early. Full of surprises such as Morocco climbing up into fourth place. BUT cannot deny the dark undertones of a culture that is not as open minded to the world, and I hope this is a wake up call to that region. My score is a respectable 7.5 out of 10. Quote
StefanMUC Posted December 20, 2022 Report Posted December 20, 2022 Voilà: that’s how sportswashing works. Yeah, there were some serious issues, but hey, sports action was great, let’s give it 7.5/10! Quote
Scotguy II Posted December 20, 2022 Report Posted December 20, 2022 Some of the best football ever seen at a World Cup and one of the best Finals ever Lots of upsets and minnows surprising us, legends flourished and legends fell Absolutely stunning stadiums 8.5/10 Quote
Sir Rols Posted December 20, 2022 Report Posted December 20, 2022 (edited) Hmmm. It’s probably a fair appraisal to say the sport was high quality. I’m not one to judge that - I don’t claim to have the knowledge of football to appraise it fairly - but, yes, lots of upsets, legends performing, exciting results and high scores and a final that’s getting rave reviews seems to attest to that. But the sheiks weren’t kicking those balls (and probably would have employed slave workers if they had to), the eye-watering money spent to create the stadiums, the death toll to achieve the same, and the blatant blind-eye turned to human rights is a massive stain on the tournament. Qatar just should never have been awarded it (and it’s well established it only won through a bribery scandal that mired FIFA in its biggest scandal ever). The footballers surely would have performed just as sparklingly anywhere else - unless you believe there was something magic in the air and sands of Doha. Maybe there should be two scores if people are rating the tournament - one for the sporting action (which I understand would probably indeed be high marks) and one for the organisation, which has been nothing but a disgrace for FIFA and Qatar since it was first awarded. That shouldn’t be forgotten. Edited December 20, 2022 by Sir Rols 2 1 Quote

Olympic Council of Asia recently awareded back to back Asian Games to Qatar and Saudi Arabia (the later, regarding human rights violation, being basically Qatar on Steroids) for 2030 and 2035 and even the winter edition (lmao). FIFAGate 2.0 needs to happen. Hopefully something as bad or worse happens to the IOC which still wants to give a vibe they're not as bad as FIFA (when they are). Quote
