World Cup: FIFA president Infantino slams Europe's hypocrisy in astonishing speech (espn.com)

Well it finally happened. Infantino had a full blown meltdown at his latest press conference. The alcohol issue, LGBTI concerns, and Qatar1s human rights criticisms all came to a head. This tops Thomas Bach`s meltdown after Oslo pulled out of the 2022 WOGs race.

On the alcohol issue, several news outlets (NBC, CNN, ESPN) reported that other FIFA sponsors were concerned about potential u-turns by the Qataris and both CNN and NBC commented that FIFA has effectively lost control of the World Cup. Yesterday`s announcement confirms this. Infantino reacted by saying fans should be able to go 3 hours without a beer and tries to compare the alcohol rules in stadiums to Europe (he fails to note that you can buy beer on concourses at stadiums like Wembley and Aviva but you just cannot take it to your seat). He rants about European human rights violations over thousands of years (???) He said that no decision regarding the World Cup is taken unilaterally (another falsehood) as media reports clearly stated Sheikh Jassim, the brother of the emir, told FIFA that no alcohol in the stadiums was a non-negotiable issue.

The same vibe as during Putin‘s pseudohistorical teachings these days, actually.

I thought the same thing actually. One of the reporters on CNN this morning also remarked that Infantino looked tired and ragged.  I'd say it looked like he pulled an all nighter.

Ah, yes, the Racist Card....it always works. Good thing people aren't stupid as Infantino thinks.

I can already see him in 10 years regretting all of this mess, just like Blatter. You can tell FIFA doesn't eeven has control of this event anymore and Sheikhs gave a good bag of money to this bald fraud after doing that stupid speech. <_<

Its hilarious how FIFA is in complete panic/damage control seeing how Qatar, despite all the money and built stadiums, are still managing to make this one of the most disastrous editions ever.

Thousands of sweltering World Cup fans are forced to queue for TWO HOURS in searing 90F afternoon heat - with no water fountains nearby - as fan parks are LATE to open in FIFA's latest Qatar shambles

More of the horror show by Infantino.

He actually said these words at the World Cup Press Conference:

“Today I have very strong feelings”.

”Today I feel Qatari.”

“Today I feel Arab.”

“Today I feel African.”

“Today I feel Gay.”

“Today I feel Disabled.”

“Today I feel a Migrant Worker.”

Paul the Octopus would be a more effective FIFA president.

You gotta give it to Infantino’s reverse psychology, though. Way to go Gianni to ensure the focus is on migrant workers, LGBTQ and human rights! He made sure people are talking about anything but football.

Say what you want of the IOC but at least they stopped Qatar when they started to get too unhinged with their sportwash ambitions with their two olympic bids for 2016 and 2020.

I won't be shocked at all if their team makes it all their way up to the semis in an "unexpected, underdog" miracle. :P After all, we have the precedent of SK in 2002.

FIFA..........doing everything they can to make the IOC look like a well oiled machine

FWIW, the IOC certainly is one.

They absolutely pulled together after the SLC scandal, in the sense that their public image became super polished and the backroom deals much smarter (and reframed as “New Normal” or whatever). And think about him what you want (and I’ll be the first to do so), but Fencing 1976 would never have taken residence in S

Amnesty International and other human rights groups are pushing back on Infantino 's bizarre ramble. I really think that FIFA had grandiose visions of genuine reform in Qatar and how they would moderate their ways much like the IOC delusionally believed when they first gave the 2008 Olympics to China.  And it has been a spectacular failure. The media is right. Qatar is running the show here, not FIFA. I've seen a couple social media posts along with a comment in BBC that said they couldn't understand how FIFA could not get Qatar to relax their alcohol rules they way they did in Brazil. Simply put, Brazil is a western democracy while Qatar is still heavily under the influence of conservative Islamists and what they say goes.

As for the IOC, they now have more than enough evidence to quickly dismiss a likely Doha bid for 2036. Sure they can have the standard "dialogue" to make it seem like they are entertaining the idea, but then can quickly deep six them later.

While I know it wouldn't happen, I'd like to see UEFA, CONMEBOL, and some or perhaps all of CONCACAF vote to break from FIFA and form their own international football federation. FIFA left with just Asia and Africa couldn't survive.
