A Winter Olympics in China and a World Cup in Qatar.. 2022 is not destined to go down in history as a good year for major international sports events hosting.  Not that we didn't know about all this already with Qatar

This will be the FIRST World Cup to be held in the Arab world. Also the first in a muslim majority country. The weather in Qatar is very hot. So that is a reason why it will be held from the late November to mid December. So again it will be the first tournament not be held in May-July.

Not sure if this was posted but we're finally seeing more details of Qatar 2022 brand besides the logo.

Website also shows a bit more of the brand.

Also, it's been quite a while and no mascot announcement...would it be safe to assume this WC won't have a mascot then?

aaaaaand England and Spain are refusing to release their players for World Cup Qualifying to "red flag" countries for COVID.  Those currently include Mexico, Egypt, and yes.......Brazil and Argentina.

Is this going to be the start of  "so are we gonna have a World Cup or nah?"

Anyway, to answer your question; yes, we'll have a world cup. This really belongs in the general FIFA thread, not in this one. It's a situation created by covid but it's exposed problems that already exist between FIFA and the club game. Problems which, at their heart, come down to what FIFA is nowadays.

Does the summary include also the number of dead workers per stadium?

Perhaps you should ask them.

8 white elephants

absolutely they’ll be white elephant stadiums afterwards.   but they’ve got money to burn, so it’s not going to worry them.

It's almost a shame, because those are some really nice looking stadiums.  But they're obviously going to be white elephants.  And oh yea, literally thousands of people died to build them.

absolutely, the human rights and the lives of the stadium workers were trampled on.  In the Sepp Blatter era, we know how this WC ended up in Qatar in the first place.

That whole election makes the Salt Lake City bribery scandal look like petty theft. Qatar paid handsomely to host the World Cup and FIFA covered it up because they knew they'd face a legal nightmare trying to take it away.

And the sad thing is that they campaigned on the promise of air-conditioned stadiums.  Then basically said "just kidding, we'll just host the World Cup in November and December, hope you don't mind"

Ah the air conditioned stadiums. That was a farce that everyone but FIFA caught on to. Even better, before the decision was made to move the tournament to winter, Qatar was discussing creating remote controlled clouds that would block out the sun. Literally as though the organizers read a science fiction novel and said hey we can do that. Ranks right up there with the crazy Saudi crown prince's plan to create a futuristic city staffed entirely by robots and AI and an artificial moon that can make the beaches glow in the dark . . . Yes this is true

I was going to ask about the A/C stadia.  I think they barely made the minimum.  Some cold air will be blown over the seated areas, but none of that cold air would really transfer into the FOP.  Hence, Nov-Dec and evening hours.

Looks like the matches in the group stage are scheduled for 1pm, 4pm, 7pm, and 10pm.  So not necessarily all during the evening, but it'll basically be 2.5 out of the 4 matches each day that occur after sunset
