Really I can imagine a boycot from European countries about Qatar 2022. I'm pretty sure, the world cup won't be in Qatar in 2022. Nobody wants this world cup there.

FIFA giveth and only FIFA can taketh away. Which is to say.. the same organization that awarded Qatar the 2022 World Cup and apparently thought it was a good idea now has to be the ones to say it's a bad idea and say they're not going to host anymore. As much as this whole thing has made FIFA look terrible, it would probably make them look even worse (not the mention the political ramifications) to strip them of the World Cup, even though that's what pretty much everyone outside of Qatar would like to see.

I can't see an outright boycott... I can see the Euro leagues doing a backdoor boycott by refusing to move their schedules around. Likely? No, But possible.

I agree. I think individual countries and players (spurred on in part by their clubs) might take a stand on this one, but I don't think we'll have a massive organized boycott on the level of, say, a 1980/1984 Olympics.

We've also made it out of the knock-out round more recently.

Tony if I see you say England should be given the hosting rights one more time I will throw my computer. This is really getting old pal. There's nothing wrong with Russia hosting in 2018 and 2022 shou

Someone needs to sue FIFA over this mess. Rivals bidders, European leagues and clubs, TV networks, sponsors, players...all are being mucked about because of FIFA's inability to think properly. The bi

Qatar has just started Handball World championschip.

And they just defeated Germany (GERMANY!!). I didn't watch the whole thing (watching Poland-Croatia, obviously), was the Qatari team really better?

Didn't watch either, but given that Germany didn't really qualify in their own right for the WC, the whole thing already has a bad taste. However, Qatar going window shopping to recruit a mercenary national handball squad is just ridiculous. Like the Austrian coach said after the1/8 final with dubious referee decisions: Qatar is going to win the WC (because they paid for it).

Qatar keeps continuing it's corruption by wrongly buying things that should be won fairly, not by corruption. Qatar will not learn it's lessons.

Back in late 2010 I wanted to give Qatar a chance. Now I just see them as arrogant, greedy pigs who want to host and win everything, just like a tiny man trying to compensate his stature by looking al l cool and sucessful. At least UAE reached the semis of the Asian Cup on their own merit, with most of the squad being native players and not a mercenary squad.

PS: Dear god I just read they hired 58 spaniards to support the team on the tribunes. Can this be more pathetic?

They even have their own blog. Uuuuugh....

At times like this I'm ashamed that my favorite team (FC Barcelona) is also sucking at them by putting qatari sponsors on their shirts. Ironically the team started to go downhill when they started to do this.

Sadly, the Mercenaries beat Poland in the semis. And of course they were aware of all criticism and made a local qatari player (Mallash) being the player of the match. Yeaah as if i'm going to buy that now.

France will await them in the final. I'm crossing my fingers they lose but that seems to be very impossible at this moment. They might just buy bribe the french team to make them lose.

Just another reason why giving the WC to Qatar was a terrible idea. facepalm.gif

France can't lose against this team of mercenaries.

Well theoretically they could.......

........but they DIDN'T!!!!!!!!!

Terminé! La France est championne du monde pour la 5e fois! Historique!

Good. I don't know anything about sports law, but could somebody actually claim against Qatar 2022 on the grounds of sporting integrity? I mean, look at Qatar's run in this, could the chance of something similar in 2022 be grounds for stripping the tournament from them?

No.

It was all within IHF laws, and they praised Qatar for the WC, go figure...

I am not entirely sure, but once you play an official match for a country, you are not eligible to represent another one (FIFA).

When you say "they praise Qatar for the WC" I instantly had a mental picture of a group of sheikhs handing over a money case behind their backs to the IHF authorities.

Exactly. It depends on the federation. FIFA and the IIHF have some of the most strict laws governing representation. Qatar would have to buy kids right now and hope that they progress into star players. But they can't because FIFA has many, many laws in place regarding under-aged transfers. I am sure if they could, they would be trying already.

And thank G-d France won. There was Olympic qualification on the line.

I don't even think many of the 'Qatari' players are even eligible for Qatar in the Olympics because the IOC has their own lists of citizenship requirements that are usually more stringent then the federations.

Insider notes: Qatar set for winter World Cup, MLS CBA update, more

Multiple sources say it's a done deal that World Cup 2022 will take place in November and December of 2022 in Qatar. A FIFA task force will meet in Doha next week and make that recommendation, and the FIFA Executive Committee is set to make the decision final at its meeting in Zurich next month.

I've seen at least 1 sportswriter in the US float the theory that FIFA knew they would never be able to host a World Cup in the Middle East during the summer, but they sold it that way so that the European clubs wouldn't get so antsy about the calendar and having to hold it in during November/December.

Obviously it sucks for Fox and I have to imagine the timing of this announcement and the extension of the contract aren't unrelated. And not that it's a top priority for FIFA, but the World Cup will get buried in the sports news here as a result. Much worse than what NBC dealt with in 2000 with the Olympics in September. That's nothing compared to this.

Obviously it sucks for Fox

What will be the most important WC Games in November 2022 (insofar as Fox's investment is concerned)? Just the first 3 USA Games -- like 1/week. If it's late PM or early evening in Qatar, what time would that be in the US? Fox has nothing to worry about. And if the USA advances, then Fox should be grateful that they'll have more premium time to sell.

I'd say Fox has a lot to worry about. Not that they can do much about the schedule though. This isn't like the Olympics where NBC has the authority to go to the sport federations and help them dictate start times. Fox has to deal with the hand they're dealt and at best, maybe they're swapping some start times.

Best guess is that most the games are at 7am ET, 10am ET, and 1pm ET (that translates to 3pm-6pm-9pm in Qatar). And they have to work around NFL and college football games which may prove difficult if those schedules are set before the World Cup draw. So that may make a difference where the US is scheduled. If there's a game or 2 up against NFL or college games, that's a big problem.
