StefanMUC
Qatar taking FIFA down with them? Bring it on!!
Nacre
Seems like the talk of taking away the World Cup from either Russia or Qatar is getting less. The article here is a bit over the top on repercussions if the World Cup were to be taken away, even if clear bribery is proved. I don't think it is over the top. It would be an absolute disaster for the United States particularly (and the West in general) from the perspective of diplomatic and military concerns. For example OPEC won't cut off oil, but they could very well increase prices. Why should countries like the USA, Australia and/or the UK bail out FIFA and take a beating in the public opinion of the Muslim and Russian world? If FIFA soiled their marquee tournament then they can clean up the mess. I've flown Qatar Airways several times, even got a free business class upgrade. Hard to argue with the decision that they are the world's best airline. I can't understand this attitude. If you view Qatar as an evil country that uses semi-slave labor, why do you fly on their flag airline? It's the same as my neighbors who complain about unionized manufacturing jobs leaving the USA for China . . . and then buy Chinese-manufactured goods at Walmart. stryker
Qatar as well as most of the Middle East have way too much invested business wise to jeopardize the economic relationship with the West. OPEC isn't going to increase prices over a World Cup. If anything, OPEC's influence has been heavily diminished by the recent shale boom in the U.S. The Qataris will try to take down FIFA. In light of the current article link, I'd say it's also likely the teams from the Arab League would move to boycott FIFA and perhaps stage an "Arab or Islamic Cup" in 2022. The public relations beating the likes of the USA, UK, and most of UEFA would take from the Arabs would be nasty, but the Arabs aren't going to jeopardize any diplomatic or military ties, especially in light of what's going on in the region right now. http://dohanews.co/arab-region-rallies-around-qatar-and-its-right-to-host-2022-world-cup/

Rob2012
Spanish league challenges Fifa over switch in 2022 World Cup datesThe Spanish football league is challenging Fifa’s decision to switch the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to November-December.The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) says the Spanish league (LFP) has filed an appeal against the Fifa decision, which would mean the tournament avoids the Qatari summer heat. But a November-December tournament would also force top European leagues to shut down for eight peak weeks and require more summer fixtures. This is the first formal legal challenge to moving the World Cup in Qatar from the traditional June-July slot. The court has not set a hearing date.Fifa’s executive committee approved the change in March, 18 months after requesting a global consultation. The Spanish league is a member of the European Professional Football Leagues group, which was consulted.Fifa rejected a proposal by European clubs and leagues to play in May-June.The Spanish sports newspaper As quoted the LFP president, Javier Tebas, as saying he had filed the lawsuit “in defence of the interests of the clubs that are contributing to the international teams”.According to As, Tebas submitted three independent expert reports to Cas which concluded the LFP would lose €65m (£24.5m) by moving the World Cup to the winter.http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jun/28/spanish-league-challenges-fifa-switch-2022-world-cup?CMP=share_btn_tw
gotosy
FIFA confirms 2022 World Cup to start on Nov. 21, be played over 28 daysZURICH -- The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will start on Monday, Nov. 21, kicking off a 28-day tournament that will finish on Sunday, Dec. 18. FIFA's executive committee confirmed the 2022 dates on Friday, six months after picking Dec. 18 -- Qatar's national holiday -- for the final. In March, FIFA finally decided to switch the 2022 tournament from June-July to avoid Qatar's summer heat. A 28-day World Cup is four fewer than usual and is designed to cause less disruption to clubs and leagues which must shut down for several peak midseason weeks. FIFA president Sepp Blatter was set to hold a news conference at the FIFA Executive Committee meeting in Zurich on Friday, but that conference was cancelled. FIFA had delayed choosing a kickoff date in Qatar while it held talks on the 2019-2024 schedule of national team fixtures. The international calendar mandates when clubs must release players for national-team duty. The calendar approved on Friday means clubs must release players to the 32 World Cup teams by Monday, Nov. 14, 2022 -- one week before the opening match. No national team match dates -- either qualifiers for continental championships or friendlies -- have been set for October 2022. Instead, the two fixtures typically scheduled in October will be moved forward four months. That creates a four-match program for national teams, scheduled between May 30 and June 14, 2022 at the end of the European season. In a minor switch, the September double-header of national team matches will be pushed back two weeks to start on Sept. 20, 2022. FIFA had earlier approved the date change to winter avoid the fierce heat of June and July, along with the shortened tournament over 28 days instead of the usual 32. The measure had been pending executive committee approval. A FIFA task force earlier this year had recommended that the 2022 tournament should take place in November and December. The task force, led by Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa, ruled out the possibility of playing the tournament in May and said a clash with the Winter Olympics, held in January, would be undesirable. http://www.espnfc.com/fifa-world-cup/story/2630641/fifa-confirms-nov-21-start-for-2022-world-cup-in-qatar

cslopes54
They'll remain quiet. Lots of speculation on workers deaths. "The real fatality rate is over 1,000 per year, meaning that 7,000 workers will die by 2022. Qatar hospital emergency departments are receiving 2,800 patients per day - 20% more from 2013 to 2014." As of now, Qatar claims no death on its WC Projects. I call it BS the stadiums are now summed up to cost $10bn
Nacre
I heard on the radio today that Qatar will spend over $200 billion to host this tournament. With the obvious caveat that this is not an official figure, that seems like a scary number. Is it likely that democratic countries that would need to build new stadiums will be scared away from the World Cup the same way they have been frightened of hosting the winter Olympics after Sochi's $51 billion expense? They really should have bid for the Club World Cup instead. 1) It is held in the winter anyway so there would be no need to ruin the club calendar. 2) They would only need two stadiums instead of twelve. 3) Teams are allowed to buy players, so it wouldn't matter that they don't have many domestic players.
