Isn't this strange ? unfair situation for 4 cities

Recommended Posts

this is something i don't get...they say that now the olympics are very ruled, that contacts between the bidding cities and IOC members are extremely organised by the IOC (Ghana, berlin, New zealand etc...) and should not be done otherwise etc...

then we learn that 2 days before the meeting Tony Blair who is in a way part of the bidding comitee for London (obviously) but also his wife have asked for private meetings with IOC members in order to convince them...meetings that the other  cities won't get...

and it doesn't seem to shock anyone...i find it quite unfair ! how come the IOc didn't react to that ???

J.A. Samaranch said not long ago, that the evaluation commision is part of the bid, but nowone should expect that the report would decide the hosting city. It would have a significant weight in the election, but just to eliminate those cities which does not meet the levels of the IOC. Not more not less.

Those who would met the requests of the IOC passes into the closer race and those who clearly would have difficults ( he didnt said --- does who would fail) to met demands would have difficults to get into the closer range.

He remarked that those reports are not to elect a frontrunner, but to eliminated the weakest bid or bids.

The rest of the race is more a political and geopolitical race.

And Mister Blair is a very clever politician and he tries to make its best of the situation.

Thats all.

Even if its not the best technical bid that will win finally.

Our prime havent seen this so far. I must say i havent seen him working actively in Madrid 2012 bid. :verysad: And the head of Madrid 2012 is Mr.Gallardon (PP - Conservative) and rival in spanish politics of primeminister Zapatero (Very left-winged party).

I cant tell about Paris and France. But it seems that the US President Mr. Bush isnt very interested in giving NYC a political boost i think.

that isn't true at all he and his adiministration backs the bid 100% and will appear live via television during the presenatation....quite frankly I don't see why he would have to be there anyway, especially when you just need him in a few minute presentation....plus he is more concerned about attending the G8 summit on time, which I think is also much more important...get your facts straight before making such a statement in the future....

I read somewhere that invitation letters were sent to IOC members in advance asking if they would agree to meet Tony Blaire in Singapore. Presumably, it is up to the inidividual member if they accept or not. There was nothing stopping the other bid cities doing the same....

At this point in the race, you have to deal in the real world.   In reality, the IOC is a very Europe-heavy organization, and in the real world, the Europeans are not very fond of Mr. Bush.

So Bush is wise to stay at home and appear on TV.

oh I agree that that was most likely a factor....but my other points also were factors in his decision not to attend live...and he and his adminstration do still back the Games 100%...even though no matter when NYC hosts (2012, 2016) he won't be president anyway so...plus I really don't think having your countries leader running around is really going to sway the IOC too much (I am sure it helps, but I doubt that much)...plus we have Hillary for that   :)

I agree, ja.

Thank goodness he didn't go to Singapore.

We're very lucky to have Hillary take his place.

Back to the topic . . .

This is what every candidate city is in Singapore to do . . .lobby for more votes, not just Blair.

I'm laughing at how naive some people seem to be about the bid and vote process.

There are some newbies on this board that think that the IOC members study the evaluation reports, then vote, naturally, for the city with the highest ratings on the evaluation report.

They seem to be almost shocked that {gasp} bid cities are actually lobbying and working hard to get as many votes as this can.
