Well they ain't gonna win with Annecy.

Nice forever!

Annecy won easily because there is a very strong involvement and support from the French sports movement.

Nice has only itself to blame for the poor showing: their bid was just image and PR with nothing concrete behind it! Better do their homework next time.

Anyhow, France's chances are very, very slim at best.

why Grenoble scored so low in the votings?? I imagine that the fact of having host previously didn't help much, did it?

Absence of popular support it seems.

Public opinion does play a major part in the bidding process contrary to what many may think....

... jeremie do you think that this decision is a kind of reheasal/"teaser-bid" for Paris 2020?

Given that Henri Sérandour (the French NOC President) did say this morning that France wouldn't bid for 2020 as at this stage no French city has expressed interest, I would say no. What Sérandour daid however is that France needs to be more active on the international sports stage (host more European / World Champs, more IOC-sponsored meeting like Sessions or Congress, host more IF congresses) and that bidding for 2018 was part of this strategy. He has also been very clear on the fact that although the French 2018 bid should be technically capable of winning, a victory would be very difficult (and that the four French candidate cities knew it).

Nuisance? How on earth did you come to that conclusion?

Besides, the IOC gets a decent amount of cash from each bidding city so even if they really didn't like the French bidding (which I think is a silly assumption), I'm sure they could put up with another Paris bid, take the money and run.

if Annecy win the WOG 2018 then it would be another Consolationprize for failed SOG bids!

Hold on.

It seems a lot of people are underestimating Annecy's strengths. Their plan is more than decent and they have more than one assets.

Why don't we wait to have a clearer pictures of all the candidates before passing any judgement?

Besides, the IOC gets a decent amount of cash from each bidding city s

Myth.

The money the IOC gets from the bid cities cover:

- the expenses of the IOC evaluation commission visit

- the services the IOC offers the applicant / candidate cities: Applicant Cities Seminar in Lausanne, Observer Programme during the Olympic Games, Official Debrief of the Olympic Games, access to the OGKM data...

I don't think the IOC is making any significant profit out of the amount of cash it receives from the bidding city.

Somebody mentioned in a previous post in this thread that especially Annecy received support by the different french winter sports federations.

I wonder what these federations demand for this support? I mean what is the benefit for example for the french Biathlon federation to support Annecy and not Grenoble or Nice?

Support of population in Grenoble and Nice was uneffective, also talking very seriously, people of Annecy don't want olympic games, they love their city and don't want it to be troubled by idiots from IOC. That's truth. Also real estate prices are already very high in Annecy, they surely don't want it to go higher.
