jim jones
From the very same news agency Rob Shorthouse used to put Glasgow 2014 propaganda out http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5ilTZxK...OZ1Qd69ZgGng9Ag Nigeria makes u-turn on U-17 FIFA tournament 45 minutes ago LAGOS (AFP) — Nigeria President Musa Yar'Adua on Tuesday rescinded a decision not to host next year's FIFA Under-17 Championship after the costs of staging the event were scaled down. In a statement President Yar'Adua said the government had approved nine billion naira (less than 100 million dollars) for the championship. The statement described the first budget of 35.5 billion naira presented by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) as "outrageous". Last week Nigerian sports minister Hassan Gimba met with FIFA officials to inform them of the financial difficulties. The reasoning is very simple for the withdraw in the first place . The CAF lead LOC fudged the costs hoping to pocket tens of millions if not hundreds of million of Dollars and President Yar Adua knew it. It has come to light that 35 billion Naira or over 300 million dollars was the request for this tournament by the LOC of the Nigerian Taxpayer. As soon as Nigeria threw this back to Fifa's Lap the budget request was reduced from 35 billion Naira to 17 Billion to 5 billion Naira. 1 billion Naira was the sum the Abuja 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid spend or about 9 million dollars. Yes maybe The next Prime Minister of the UK can take a lesson from Nigeria's first and only university educated President. A lesson on how not to get jerked around by sports administrators. Rob2012
Whilst Nigeria is piddling around and getting its knickers in a twist over an under-17s tournament (which London could host tomorrow if it wanted to), England is looking like a strong bet to host the 2018 World Cup; so please don't try comparing the two countries, you don't want egg on your face again. I'm glad Nigeria has finally managed to sort its spat with FIFA out, and if you want to talk about their tournament, that's fine. But I suspect, from your last sentence, this is more about your boooooring anti-UK agenda than anything else.

Yes but Britian would shut up take the tournament and pay out an inflated cost from a sport figure like a Seb COE. That is my point. When people start to realize that the IOC , Fifa and other sports organizations are not gods and will not make or break their country by refusing the blackmail. When more governments stand up like is the case with Nigeria and Canada then sports festivals will be rationalized. The Back Pedaling is happening with London 2012 as they realize they were pushed off a cliff. 2 athletes to a room in the Athletes village ? try 3 now . Seems the promises are being broken. Nigeria had a provisional hosting right for U17 2009. In other words Blatter wanted it in Africa and Nigeria was granted without another country in competition with them. Sorting out the "spat" with Fifa basically is replacing the LOC appointed by CAF with none other then the Vice President of Nigeria Himself Goodluck Jonathan. The Nigerian Government Attempted to get rid of the CAF LOC last year to the protest of FIFA. That certainly sets a great example for the Commonwealth Games bid if it goes ahead. The news in Nigeria was also of the Opposition Parties in Government now overwhelmingly supporting the Nigerian Government to hosting International Sports Festivals. Some simple Facts for you . Nigeria has 60 billion dollars in Foreign Exchange Accounts, The UK nationalization for your banking industry is on borrowed twice that money from other countries. The President of Nigeria had returned to the treasury 3.5 Billion dollars this year of unspent Budget from all the Government Departments. The Excess Oil Revenues Account Stands at 10 billion Plus. Nigeria could easily have funded at the 300 million LOC Budget but they knew that they could push back and get exactly what they wanted Control within their country and not by a National from Cameroon out to pocket a fortune . The UK well hey you are still in denial that you are a once mighty power that the sun is setting on . Throwing back the Olympics would show that . Nigeria's President Yar Adua certainly has a common trait with Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper who said no to demands from Switzerland in regards to the Vancouver Olympics. both Leaders know that sports festivals are a cottage industry from Europe out to fleece countries in other continents if given the chance. Gee maybe England should have offered to replace Nigeria for U17 next year but hey first you have to ask the various Russians , Arabs and American Jews that own many of the clubs who are also the owners of a couple of stadiums in England. cfm Jeremie
The IOC, in recent years, have always agreed on cost saving measures (basically since Sydney 2000). In some cases, they have even suggested some of them (the IOC stated that the Athens 2004 Olympic Stadium Roof was not crucial, advised the BOCOG not to build its venues too early...). Hardly any evidence of blackmailing...

arwebb
Jones, you're a liar. All that has happened here is that Nigeria are cutting back. This is no different from the careful rein on costs that is being held with the London Olympics. But because you are the anti-British, xenophobic, bigoted piece of scum that we already know you to be, you can't recognise the fact. Do the world a favour and sod off!
