Rob2012
France's Chirac backs Tokyo for 2016 Olympics 3 hours ago TOKYO (AFP) — Former French president Jacques Chirac on Tuesday backed Tokyo's candidacy to host the Olympic Games in 2016. Chirac, who left office last year, was president when Paris failed in its bid for the 2012 Summer Games, won by London after a tough fight. "I hope that the city of Tokyo succeeds in its campaign to have the Olympic Games in 2016," Chirac said at a function at the French embassy in the Japanese capital. "I am certain that the Games will find here in Tokyo a fertile ground to send to the world a message of harmony and solidarity," said Chirac, who is known for his strong interest in Japan. Tokyo is up against three other cities -- Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro -- in its bid to host the Olympics in 2016. The International Olympic Committee will decide on October 2, 2009 in Copenhagen. It would be the second Olympics in the Japanese capital after the 1964 Games, which symbolised the city's dramatic rebirth from the ashes of World War II. But Tokyo's bid has faced sizable opposition even at home, with critics saying the giant metropolis does not need the financial and environmental expense of hosting the Olympics. http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5jknIQS...wOTjmOeEJCvG6Mg ------------ I bet Tokyo 2016 officials are overjoyed...with friends like this, who needs enemies! I'm looking forward to his lobbying on behalf of the Japanese! baron-pierreIV
He's a chubby-chaser. Since when did an ex-leader's endorsement ever carry any weight? I bet if Las Vegas was running, he would endorse that bid too since both Vegas and Tokyo have replicas of the Eiffel Tower!!!
Rob2012
Since when did an ex-leader's endorsement ever carry any weight? No, you're right. Just thought it was funny when I saw this. After the 2012 fiasco I would have thought M. Chirac would have had enough of the Olympics.
cfm Jeremie
It's not like Chirac killed Paris 2012 (yea I know "bad Finnish cuisine")... so kiss of death is dumb (no one gives a sh*t about who Chirac supports). But hey, any reason for French bashing...

memorabilia
(no one gives a sh*t about who Chirac supports). ... I agree ... Not sure, Chirac has steel good friends in Africa... And one of the French IOC member, Guy Drut is a close friend. Drut is in the Evaluation Commission for 2016 and somepeople says that he has some friends inside the IOC. (For Paris 2012, at the time when he had some problems with the justice in France, it has been said that he missed in Singapore for the lobbying)

ñuto
If Chirac supports Tokyo...Chicago, Rio or Madrid are the potential winners.
