Sorry to hear of his passing. However, now perhaps PASO can find new, dynamic leadership that will establish itself and the Pan American Games as a respected sports entity. Don Mario sort of let it slide into a state of irrelevance in many major markets.

I'm sorry for Mario death but in all honestly the guy was somewhat authoritarian inside the PASO and he was too much time into power. Now they'll finally have a new leadership which I hope will adapt PASO and the Pan Am Games better to the current times.

Lol, that's my birthday.

"somewhat"??? He was basically a godfather-kind of person.

Any rumours on who will succeed him and when?

Toronto had a record breaking year with its tourists hitting 14.3 million overnight visitors. That number is expected to be broken in 2015 with help of the Pan Ams. Good stuff! http://www.thestar.com/business/economy/2015/02/12/toronto-sets-new-tourism-records-china-now-top-overseas-market.html

That's not surprising. It was definitely noticeably busier from when I first went in November 2012 to the second and most recent time I went which was this past December. The downtown area was certainly buzzing with life any time of the day. The biggest downfall that I noticed from my recent stay there was there was a lot of litter all over the place. It's still cleaner than my own downtown, but it's definitely something that surprised me since I remember downtown being so clean when I went in 2012. But yes if you have not gone to Toronto for a visit, I suggest everyone to do so. It's even better to pay with frequent flyer miles as United, and I imagine many other airlines, treat any travel to Canada as a domestic flight and you can use the exact same amount of miles to travel there as you would anywhere in the US. It certainly saved me more than $600.

It appears that the cauldron will be in front of the CN Tower:

"TO2015 is seeking a vendor of record for the design of the Cauldron for the Pan Am Games and Parapan Am Games, located in front of the CN Tower between the Rogers Centre and the Ripley’s Aquarium. The Gas Line will be connected into the existing station located behind the Aquarium, routed out of public view, and trenched where possible, to the cauldron location. The Gas Line Contractor will ensure that appropriate flows and pressures are met for the connection to the Cauldron. Minor servicing is anticipated over the course of the Games. The Gas Line is to be removed, and all original conditions reinstated post games."

Field hockey schedule announced.

I get to see the two matches that open the women's tournament Chile vs Cuba and USA vs Uruguay. Given that the US women's program has a heavy central Pennsylvania influence, it will be like cheering a hometown team.

The village has been handed over to organizers.

Where are the photos? If there is one superlative attached to Toronto hosting these games, it has to be the Village! The pics I have seen so far are sensational. And following the stunning comments tweeted, facebooked and e-mailed by athletes who attended Vancouver 2010, it seems that Canada has established the reputation of providing the very best accommodation for athletes when hosting international sporting events. Other than that, the venues are disappointing. But if the atmosphere and attendance can eclipse that fact, then it may cause a serious shift in perceptions about the aesthetics of sporting facilities contributing to the atmosphere of sporting events. Let the experiment begin.

lol grow a pair if this hurts you.

I would only say the aquatics center and track stadium (then again the two most important venues) are disappointing. All other venues are pretty solid looking, including the other new builds and renovated venues.

Well this is the Pan American games not the Olympics. Bring your venue standards down a notich.

shut up. It doesn't hurt me. Hes just obnoxious with the pretentious language that he uses.

lol really get over it. Everyone here has that one person that annoys the crap out of them just ignore it and move on. He's possibly the least worst person on these forums so I don't mind him staying.

The cold weather Toronto is experience right now but lead to the open water swimming events being postponed or cancelled.

Is there swimming events going on right now in Toronto? That was not a smart move lol. But if you're talking about for the Pan Am games, the games won't be until this summer so I think today's weather will have little to no effect on the events that won't be happening 5 months from now.

I do mean the Pan Ams, and UANA (the Pan Am Aquatics Federation) reported that last winter was cold and that the events would not be held using this past summer's temperatures. This winter is colder, so draw the conclusion.

There is some concern over water temperatures at the expected open water host in Toronto. While that venue has not yet been publicly named, the report says that a temperature reading taken on July 18th read 14.4 degrees Celsius, or 58 degrees Fahrenheit. That is well below the FINA mandated minimum of 16 degrees Celsius. “This past winter was extremely harsh,” the report reads. “There was still ice in the Great Lakes in May. The hope is next summer will have warmer weather earlier, but we are looking at alternate sites if the need arises. The present site is perfect and we hope it will work in 2015. We need for all our UANA Federations to understand that at 16C or 17C will be a cold water swim. The organizing committee would like to bring me back for another site visit in the fall.” Source

TORONTO (Reuters) - Police in Toronto have discovered a tunnel with electricity supplied by a generator near one of the venues for this summer's Pan American Games, a spokesman said on Monday.

A CBC News report said "the sophisticated bunker with tunnel" ran for about 7 meters (23 feet) and was large enough for an adult to stand in.

The tunnel was found near Rexall Center, a tennis stadium on a campus of York University in the north of the city hat will be used for the Pan Am games in July.

Police do not believe the tunnel was being used for the illegal drug trade, CBC said. A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday, the spokesman said.
