intoronto
Does anyone know how many teams soccer/basketball/rugby will have? All other tournaments should have 8 each. Softball and baseball to accomodate another event resulted in a cap of 12 for each sport divided among them,
dave199
intoronto, you would probably know this. Which sports will have 2016 Olympic qualifiers here in Toronto? I remember the Toronto organizing committee saying sometime ago that they're trying to get some qualifiers for some of the higher profile sports. Any word on that? They want more then the 12 and are aiming for 15-18 sports. Water polo and synchronized swimming will not be qualifiers and they were in Guadalajara. intoronto
Here is something you rarely see with Multi-sporting events: Toronto 2015 Organising Committee remain $57.5 million under budgetFebruary 14 - Toronto 2015 have published their 2013 quarterly financial report which shows they are on track with preparations for the Pan and Parapan American Games and still currently under budget by $57.5 million (£37 million/€42.7 million). The positive variance figure in the capital budget was reported in the last quarterly financial report and it remains unchanged. So far, the Organising Committee have spent $48.7 million (£31.3 million/€36.1 million) of their total operations budget of $767 million (£493 million/€569 million). This represents just or 6.4 per cent of the total operations budget. In the third fiscal quarter of 2013, Toronto's 2015's operating expenses were $7.6 million (£4.9 million/€5.6 million) and were predominantly in the areas of broadcast and workforce.Toronto 2015's total venue construction expenditures for the quarter were $6.8 million (£4.4 million/€5 million) with project-to-date venue construction expenditures totalling $36.4 million (£23.4 million/€27 million), which represents five per cent of its total $674 million (£434 million/€501 million) capital budget.More than 85 per cent of the capital budget is now locked in, with financial contingencies built into each individual venue budget. Meanwhile, potential for cost increases has been mitigated by using a project management design that shifts risk to private sector contractors."We're at an important juncture in our planning for the Games," said Toronto 2015 chief executive Ian Troop."Up until the end of 2012, we focused on laying a solid foundation."This meant determining our priorities, announcing our sport programmes, choosing our venue locations and getting shovels in the ground on our major new builds."We're now drilling down into operational planning, which will involve greater hiring and procurement opportunities as we fine-tune our plans for overlay and finalize rental agreements."This hiring and procurement push will start this spring."We're looking to create bench strength - the perfect blend of local talent who know and represent the Games region best with international experts who know the ins and outs of successfully hosting an event of this magnitude."As such, our operational expenditures will increase in the coming quarters as forecast."Most important, we continue to be on budget and on time in our planning and our building."The quarterly financial report was reviewed and approved by both the Toronto 2015 Board of Directors and Audit Committee. dave199
Good to hear that Toronto's is currently under budget in preparations for these games. It seems as if every other city always ends up over budget by a lot. This shows how fiscally responsible the team for TO2015 have been. Remember all the talk about how mismanaged the organizing committee was?

intoronto
TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games Footprint Expands to Include City of Mississauga MISSISSAUGA, ON February 20, 2013 – Goalball, powerlifting and wheelchair rugby are coming to Mississauga in 2015, the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015) announced today. “We’re excited to bring more sports to Mississauga, which is ideally located to host these exciting competitions, including the Parapan Am debut of wheelchair rugby,” said Ian Troop, TO2015’s chief executive officer, who made the announcement today at a city council meeting. “The Mississauga Sports Centre is an accessible venue that will ensure peak performance and an unparalleled atmosphere for athletes and spectators alike.” Previously, powerlifting and goalball were to be hosted at York University, while wheelchair rugby was located at the University of Toronto (downtown). “As a proud supporter of the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games, our Government is pleased to see goalball, powerlifting and wheelchair rugby coming to Mississauga for the Parapan American Games,” said the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport). “Mississauga will become a hub of parasport in 2015, adding to the excitement in the region. These Games will leave a lasting legacy for our local, provincial and national sporting communities for years to come.” “The City of Mississauga is thrilled to be a part of the largest Parapan Am Games ever,” said Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga. “This means almost 400 more athletes and officials will compete in Canada’s sixth largest city, and tens of thousands more spectators will come to cheer them on. We promise Mississaugans will offer them a welcome to be remembered!” “Our ‘People’s Games’ in Ontario will be accessible and inclusive and build on our government’s commitment to a barrier-free Ontario,” said Michael Chan, Ontario Minister Responsible for the Pan/Parapan American Games. “The new Parapan Am sport cluster in Mississauga creates an ideal arena for the community to support and cheer on athletes performing at their best.”

intoronto
-__- Hazel McCallion wants ‘Mississauga first’ at airporthove over, Toronto, Mississauga wants the limelight. When tens of thousands of visitors fly in for the Pan Am Games in 2015, Mayor Hazel McCallion wants them to know exactly where they’re landing — Mississauga, not Toronto. “I would ask you to make sure that the banner at the airport . . . that it recognizes Mississauga, because the airport is in Mississauga, except for a very small corner — with nothing on it — that is in Toronto,” said McCallion after Ian Troop,Pan Am chief executive officer, made a presentation to council. “I think it’s extremely important that they’re welcomed to Toronto, yes, but to Mississauga first. And then they go to Toronto, OK?” Toronto Councillor Josh Matlow said a fight over what city gets the spotlight won’t benefit the Games. “With all due respect to Mississauga, our beautiful neighbour with some of the finest downtown towers anywhere, I think any reasonable person would conclude that most people visiting from across the Americas will be, in their minds, coming to Toronto,” said Matlow, who represents Ward 22 (St. Paul’s.) Currently, Pearson International Airport sports a sign welcoming visitors to Toronto, with faces of McCallion, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell. Welcoming new arrivals to the GTA “might be a nice compromise,” Matlow said. McCallion, who turned 92 last week, has arguably been on an anti-Toronto tear of late. In council last month she blasted the multibillion dollar provincial funding of Toronto’s transit system, while Mississauga waits desperately for money to fund its planned $1.5 billion LRT. A couple of weeks later she was livid when told the Toronto Board of Trade was being changed to the Toronto Region Board of Trade, and she questioned whether Toronto now thinks it speaks for the entire GTA on business and economic matters. Of course, her cutthroat devotion to Mississauga has turned “Hurricane Hazel” into a larger-than-life celebrity-mayor, who has appeared on shows such as Regis and Kelly and the Rick Mercer Report. Getting every last ounce of recognition from the Pan Am Games is her latest mission, even if it comes at the expense of her favourite punching bag, the big city next door. Councillor Paula Fletcher mused there is “obviously some sensitivity.” “I’m sure they can make everybody happy at the Pan Am, they have bigger issues to worry about like getting all the venues finished, long before the airport sign,” said Fletcher, representing Ward 30 (Toronto Danforth.) Greater Toronto Airport Authority spokesman Scott Armstrong said in an email that it is working with the Games organizers to welcome everyone. “We know that the airport will play an essential role as we will be the first and last impression of the Games for athletes, coaches and fans.”
