intoronto Posted September 16, 2012 Report Share Posted September 16, 2012 Some news bits from the last week: Here Infrastructure Ontario (IO) has been working with TO2015 and other partners to select companies to develop major infrastructure projects for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. All major venues will be under construction by early 2013, reports IO. The following is a status update on the projects courtesy of IO. PAN AM GAMES ATHELTES’ VILLAGE STATUS: Under construction as of January 2012. The Province has entered into an agreement with Dundee Kilmer Developments to design, build and finance the Athletes’ Village project. DETAILS: The project will result in a new, sustainable, mixed-use neighbourhood that will provide 10,000 athletes, coaches and team officials with a safe and supportive environment during the Games. After the Games the new community will include: — a new YMCA providing recreational programming for 8,000 residents; — George Brown College’s first ever student residence, which will provide housing for 500 students; — 787 units of market housing, up to 100 of which will be reserved for affordable ownership and 253 units of affordable rental housing. AQUATICS CENTRE, FIELD HOUSE AND CANADIAN SPORT INSTITUTE ONTARIO STATUS: Under construction as of July 2012. PCL Aquatics Centre 2012 was selected to design, build and finance the Aquatics Centre, Field House and Canadian Sport Institute Complex project. DETAILS: This high-performance aquatics and athletics facility will be constructed on property jointly owned by the City of Toronto and the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. The facility will include: — an aquatics centre featuring two internationally sanctioned 10-lane, 50-metre pools; a five-metre deep diving tank with five-metre, 7.5-metre and 10-metre platforms; dry-land diver training facilities; and Games-time seating capacity of approximately 6,000; — a field house featuring flexible gymnasium space for training and competition with a Games-time seating capacity of approximately 2,000, as well as an indoor recreational track and fitness area including cardio and weightlifting facilities; — a Canadian Sport Institute Ontario complex that will provide sport performance services and coaching and training facilities. HAMILTON SOCCER STADIUM STATUS: Construction will begin in late 2012. DETAILS: The stadium will host football (soccer) competition for the 2015 Games and then become a permanent home for the Hamilton Tiger Cats. The new stadium will meet all of the technical requirements of both the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) requirements. PAN AMERICAN ATHLETICS STADIUM STATUS: Construction will begin in late 2012. DETAILS: The Pan American Athletics Stadium, located at York University in Toronto, will host athletics competitions during the Games. Following the Games, the stadium will provide students, faculty and the community with a much needed recreation, training and competition facility. Highlights include: — A 5,000 fixed-seat stadium, designed to International Association of Athletics Federations and Canadian Interuniversity Sport specifications, including all the support amenities for the Games. MILTON VELODROME STATUS: Construction will begin in early 2013. DETAILS: The new velodrome will host the track cycling competition during the Games. It will include a 250-metre indoor wooden track. The velodrome also includes an infield area that can support other recreational activities such as basketball or volleyball following the Games. MARKHAM PAN AM CENTRE STATUS: Bondfield Construction Company Ltd. has been selected to build and finance the project. Construction will begin later this summer. DETAILS: The new Markham Pan Am Centre will host the water polo, table tennis and badminton competitions for the Games. Following the Games, residents will have access to the 50-metre Olympic-sized pool, triple gymnasium, community all-purpose rooms, meeting rooms and a two-level fitness centre. ETOBICOKE OLYMPIUM STATUS: Bondfield Construction Company Ltd. has been selected to build and finance the project. Construction will begin in 2013. DETAILS: Renovations to the Olympium include the existing pool and improvements to mechanical and electrical systems. PAN AMERICAN FIELD HOCKEY CENTRE STATUS: Bondfield Construction Company Ltd. has been selected to build and finance the project. Construction will begin in 2013. DETAILS: The new Pan Am Field Hockey Centre will be Ontario’s first international field hockey venue. This two-field centre at the University of Toronto’s downtown St. George campus will have the capacity to host all levels of the game, from international to local. I will point out that the athletics stadium will seat 12,500 not 5,000. And here: TO2015 team starts on Pan American Games venue Work is to begin on the official Equestrian Venue of the 2015 Pan American Games at Caledon Equestrian Park in Ontario early next month. Preparations will begin in earnest at the conclusion of the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament, which runs from September 19 to 23. Smaller upgrades and improvements are already under way, with the Caledon Equestrian Park’s major transformation scheduled for completion in time for the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games, which will run from July 10 to 26 and August 7 to 14, respectively. “We host 16 events annually at the Caledon Equestrian Park, and it’s very important to us that there are no disruptions to those events during construction,” said Craig Collins, a managing partner of Equestrian Management Group (EMG), which operates the Caledon Equestrian Park. “It’s important to the sport that these events continue, and with no other venue to move to during the building phase, we had to find a way to keep competition going. Unfortunately, we can’t just shut down for two years.” With that in mind, the build plans for the Pan Am Games were designed to be completed in several phases, with construction occurring only during the fall and winter. “Obviously, that has added some difficulty to scheduling, but we’re very fortunate that the site allows for winter construction because of the type of soils that are here,” noted Collins. “From the very beginning, we knew that we would have to create a cycle that would allow us to build in the off-season, and I think we’ve been very successful in doing that. Riders may have to take a different route to get from one place to another, but there will be no disruptions in our ability to continue to provide world-class show jumping for the duration of construction.” The first phase of construction will officially begin in October and is scheduled to be completed before the start of the 2013 show season. “We’ll be doing site work and servicing,” Collins explained of phase one. “We need to prepare all of the areas to be able to accommodate the new infrastructure that’s going to be put in place.” He continued, “Competitors will start to see some minor changes in 2013. The lower stabling area needs to move in order to provide space for the additional infrastructure needed for the Games. There’s also a good chance some of the ring work will be done for the beginning of the season.” The changes to the site will be dramatic. Phase two includes new facilities with high tech arenas (or as Collins puts it, “fancy new footing”), a new spectator area and pavilion to replace the aging infrastructure currently in place, and a new indoor facility for both competition and training purposes. “Upon conclusion of the 2013 show season, we’ll be starting all of our major builds for the Games,” said Collins. “All of those changes will be completed in time for the 2014 season and the test event we need to run prior to the 2015 Games.” The venue selection process is based on standards set by International Sport Federations (IFs), approval of the sport program by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), and consultation with the National Sport Federations (NSFs). “Caledon Equestrian Park is a world-class facility that has a well-earned reputation in the international equestrian community,” said TO2015 CEO Ian Troop. “What’s more, it’s a publicly-owned facility, so the investments we’ll be making for the Pan Am Games will benefit the public for many years to come.” That future benefit has always been the driving force behind the Park’s Pan Am Games bid. “Creating a future legacy for Canadian equestrian athletes was, by far, the key motivating factor in our bid to host the equestrian portion of the games,” Collins explained. “Our venue has enjoyed being a very popular and centrally located facility since 1986. We have always been well supported by the equestrian community. The Pan Am Games presented us with an opportunity to bring the facility to the next level, by providing us with the infusion of dollars required to do that.” The Caledon Equestrian Park is a municipally-owned facility, and the changes being made to the site will allow an increase in operations, meaning more of the community can enjoy the world-class venue. “As one of Canada’s premier show jumping events, the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament is a signature event for equestrian talent,” said Town of Caledon Mayor Marolyn Morrison. “This can only heighten the excitement about the Pan/Parapan Am Games to be held in Caledon in 2015. The stadium won't look like the above, that was mentioned in the Spec as an example. Apparently from someone who works with the RFP process the stadium won't have any roof, no end zone seating, lots of washrooms and better concession stands. Basically a souped up version of the BMO. intoronto Posted September 28, 2012 Report Share Posted September 28, 2012 (edited) The Aquatic Centre/Field house will be known as: Pan Am and Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Fieldhouse presented by CIBC -Will cost $205 million which is the largest amount spent on amateur sport in Canadian history - Will host Swimming, Synchro, Diving, Modern Pentathlon (swimming) in the aquatic centre and Fencing and Modern pentathlon (fencing) in the field house Here is the aquatic centre. Looks like London's without the wings.
