Both the City and the Tiger Cats (Canadian football team) have agreed to a facilitator, Michael Fenn. July 8th deadline, day before my birthday.

In true North American mentality the TiCats wants something out of this deal either free rent, higher subsidy, etc.

Either way it sounds like the TiCats owner, Bob Young, will agree to whatever Michael Fenn rules.

Michael Fenn was the founding CEO of Metrolinx (regional transit authority that covers Hamilton as well) and currently the interim CEO of the Canadian Urban Institute. So it's likely Mr. Fenn will support the West Harbour stadium location, best location for public transportation and strong urban setting.

So it's really up to Mr. Fenn to make the West Harbour stadium location work and find a compromise for the TiCats.

Not only is the location an issue, but what is included in the staduim will soon become an issue.

Football teams (as in Canadian football, not what we Canadians call soccer!) do NOT like to play in stadiums that have a track around the playing surface, between the fans and the football players.

That's why the suggestion to have track & Field at U of Toronto, in their new facilities, and build a football stadium (that can also be used for soccer, field hockey, rugby etc) in Hamilton is a good one. Then, the location can be more to the 'Cats liking.

Mr Fenn is going to have a tough time finding common ground between the 'Cats and the city of Hamilton.

I still think its retarded having track an hour away from the athletes village. I would have built a venue at York University instead.

Hasn't the phrse "retarded" in this context, gone out of favour?

Oilers talking Copps, stadium with the city

June 29, 2010

http://www.thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/798487

Edmonton Oilers billionaire owner Daryl Katz and entertainment giant AEG are looking at taking control of Hamilton’s Copps Coliseum and the future Pan Am stadium.

The group is at city hall today, asking council for time to come up with a business plan and proposal for the sports and concert facilities.

No formal proposal has been put to city hall yet.

Councillors are behind closed doors right now negotiating with Katz and his partners on how much time they need to develop a proposal.

Patrick Laforge from the Oilers' group first approached council shortly after the Balsillie deal locking up Copps expired last fall. By April, he had a general agreement in place with HECFI to hold Copps for the group while they assembled a pitch.

That deal expires on July 1, and today’s meetings are an effort to extend that arrangement to give the group more time to develop a business case.

LaForge said that after watching the Balsillie-NHL fight over an NHL team, they decided to move in and take a ”more professional and more strategic” approach to the city’s professional sports prospects.

He stressed this is not about moving the Oilers to Hamilton and there is no proposal for an NHL team on the table.

He said their involvement is about creating a facility that could support an NHL team.

LaForge also suggested that Copps may be too old for an NHL team and that a new arena may have to be built.

He said he had not talked to the Ticats but fully intended to.

He said he loves the West Harbour site and would also be interested in a soccer team for the facility

Got a sneak peek at the draft report.

Summed up:

Want an extention to select the final stadium site to August 31, extra time will allow for more negotiations with the Katz Group.

Plus it's narrowed down to either West Harbour (urban) or East Mountain (suburban) for final stadium location.

Not surprising that the track facility has been a topic of conversation.

Football, both amateur and pro, don't like stadiums that have a track. Football fans/owners etc like to have the crowd close to the game. A track puts the fans too far away from the game they believe.

Here in Kingston, the university (Queen's) has plans to renovate their stadium, without a track in it. Only an artificial turf field.

Not surprisingly, the plans are on "hold" due to the gigantic cost and the other expansion of the university.

Needless to say, the track people are not pleased, nor are many others. A stadium that hosts as few as 4 games a year, and soccer, is a strange use of money.

But, to get back to the PAG....track really should be hosted in Toronto; I have thought that all along. Hamilton can build a much more useable stadium for football, soccer and field hockey, etc. With good programming, it can be used from dawn to dusk in the summer, and a lot of time in the shoulder seasons.

Based on the latest news Hamilton might not get a new stadium. The Feds and Province won't fund a stadium at the West Harbour.

Instead the City may end up having to renovate Ivor Wynne stadium and host the soccer event.

Ivor Wynne is a dump.

Were will be the athletics?

Toronto, where it should have been in the beginning. They should have proposed a site near the city with more than sufficient land, to build the 15,000 seater athletics facility which could would be expanded for a future Olympics. Then the surrounding land could be utilized as a sort of Olympic park.

The Ceremonies need not be located in this stadium, you can easily use the Skydome as that, which is proposed, but the stadium will be located in Toronto to be expanded to 80,000 and host both athletics and ceremonies for a Olympics.

Looks horrible, why such a simple bland design?
