Toronto FC Supports Toronto’s Bid for the 2015 Pan Am Games

TORONTO, ONTARIO, July 3, 2009 – Toronto’s major league soccer team, Toronto FC, showed its support for the city’s 2015 Pan Am Games bid at its June 24th match against the New York Red Bulls.

In an announcement prior to the game, a Toronto FC spokesperson announced the team’s support of Toronto’s bid to bring the 2015 Pan Am Games to the city, including soccer matches that would be held at Toronto FC’s stadium, BMO Field.

In addition, the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Bid collected hundreds signatures of support from Toronto FC fans.

Consider that by 2015 or sooner the Toronto Fc could be looking as expanding their stadium and Government money could come easier if it is tied to the Pan Am Games. The same company that owns the National Hockey Leagues most successful franchise for finances being the Toronto Maple Leafs also owns Air Canada Centre , the NBA team Toronto Rapters , Toronto FC but the city owns BMO field home of FC.

Bmo field is sold out for every FC games thou it is only 20000 seats. The Stadium can expand and probably will. A Pan Am Games might have the FC on the road for two weeks but they may end up with more seating and revenues before the Pan Ams are staged and maybe after that. No franchise in Toronto is in danger of losing money backing the Pan Am Games bid. The Owner of the Hamilton Tiger Cats Football Team has pledged money for the Athletics Stadium if the bid is successful.

An influential leader of Caribbean Olympic officials is urging them to vote for southern Ontario's 2015 Pan Am Games bid.

Steve Stoute, president of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees, says his Barbados committee "will be voting for Toronto 2015," as the regional bid is known.

The Caribbean nations he's calling on represent 23 votes of the 52 total votes in the Pan American Sports Organization.

"We're thrilled someone of Steve's stature has given us that endorsement," said bid chair David Peterson.

A successful bid could deliver a track and football stadium, velodrome and 50-metre pool for Hamilton and soccer stadium for Burlington.

Stoute cited close ties with Canada through the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC).

He told The Nation newspaper CGC has run sports and social programs in Barbados and the COC and Canada Games officials helped with the recent inaugural Caribbean Games.

"That's a very nice gesture from Steve. He's highly respected," said Toronto 2015 president Jagoda Pike, adding the endorsement doesn't mean the bid team will ease up on the Games push.

The southern Ontario bid is up against Lima, Peru, and Bogota, Colombia. The vote on the 2015 host is in early November.

Steve Stoute's Endorsement should carry a great deal of weight . There are few people around as long for sports festivals as Steve Stoute as he started as a cycling coach at Kingston 66 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. The man has been to pretty much every games since then as a sports administrator.

PAN AM GAMES EVALUATION TEAM IN TORONTO AUGUST 30, 31

Visit will build decision-makers’ confidence

TORONTO, ON, July 31, 2009 – The Pan American Sports Organization’s (PASO) five-member Evaluation Commission will be in Toronto August 30 and 31 to meet with the Toronto 2015 Bid team and visit proposed Games venues and facilities.

“The visit is an ideal opportunity to showcase the many qualities of our Bid and to show PASO that Toronto is the ideal city to host the 2015 Pan / Parapan American Games,” said Jagoda Pike, President and COO, Toronto 2015 Bid Committee. “We will ensure that PASO members leave knowing that we can stage an exceptional Games.”

The Evaluation Commission will assess key elements of the bid and report back to PASO, which manages the Games and whose member nations vote to award hosting rights. The vote is expected in early November. The Evaluation Commission is visiting 2015 bid competitors Lima, Peru and Bogota, Colombia immediately before the Toronto visit.

Toronto 2015 is finalizing the two-day itinerary to meet PASO requirements, introduce the evaluators to people and organizations critical to the Games, and to highlight important elements related to Games operations.

The Pan Am Games is a major international multi-sport event, held every four years for athletes of the 42 PASO member nations. The Pan American Games consists of all Summer Olympic sports, plus other events selected by the Pan American Sports Organization, and serve as an Olympic-qualifier for a number of the participating sports. The last edition of the Games was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in July 2007 and the next will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico in October 2011.

The Toronto bid committee is gearing up for this visit. This will show that Toronto is the ideal city to host the 2015 Pan Am Games.

Premier Dalton McGuinty secretly flew to Mexico City last Friday to lobby for Toronto's 2015 Pan American Games bid, which would include events in Hamilton.

McGuinty's aides said he deliberately left out the trip from his official itinerary because he didn't want to tip off Toronto's competitors, Bogota, Colombia, and Lima, Peru.

Reporters were told last Thursday that the premier was on "private" time that day.

"I travelled to Mexico City at the invitation of president Mario Vazquez Rana of the Pan American Sports Organization to discuss Toronto's bid for the 2015 Pan Am Games," the premier said in a statement yesterday.

"I impressed upon the president that Ontario is fully committed to hosting a successful Games in 2015. During our meeting, president Vasquez Rana mentioned difficulties being encountered by the 2011 Pan Am Games being held in Guadalajara, Mexico," he said.

McGuinty said he told the PASO boss that Ontario "is ready, willing and able to offer assistance, including helping to plan and provide logistical and organizational help to ensure the best possible experience for athletes."

"This type of support for the Guadalajara Games would not add any financial burden to Ontario, but would come in the form of in-kind contributions from the public service," the premier said.

The host city of the 2015 Games will be announced later this year.

Well extending the hand of Help to the president of Paso in regards to a Guadalajara hosting having its troubles in his own nation may get Toronto the votes needed to put them over the top. Toronto is certainly easy for the Americans and Canadians of course. The Caribbean I think can be swept with the long standing sports development relationship that has existed between Canada and much of the Cairbbean . No one in that huge group was impressed at all with the no show by Lima or Bogota for the annual meeting of Canoc. Toronto seized the opportunity with both hands.

Steve Stoute the president of the Caribbean Olympics Committees association is fully behind the Toronto 2015 bid. The play the Premier made could certainly make in roads into the central american countries. Toronto takes the Caribbean , North America and countries down to Panama and it is Toronto 2015 a hosting reality. Who knows also about the realm of Quad Pro Quo.

Rio 2016 could be getting some help from Canadian IOC members in exchange for Votes for Toronto 2015. This could be the reason a vote for 2015 has been delayed until after 2016s vote .

Many Canadian Banks and Businesses are located in the Carribean, and the Carribean is a major vocation location for Canadians.

Cuba and Canada also have a strong relationships and the Dominican Republic also are strong ties to Canada.

all that is good to say but it really does not mean votes automatically . Peru and Colombia I am sure have good relations with many nations as well but we are talking sports Admins making the choice based on what they feel may be best for their athletes. A Sports ADmin in Chile could think keeping his or hers athletes in SA in 2015 may be better . You never know.

The big thing I think that could have been two turning points is the CANOC meeting Bogota and Lima stood up less then a 4 hours flight away while Toronto 2015 flew half a hemisphere practically to present their case to the Caribbean, some South America and Central American Delgates with votes. The second turning point is this plead from Lima for Toronto to step aside. Generally I think that would be not looked to positively by all the delegates .

Chile and Peru do not have good relations, and Peru and Boliva do not have good relations. Columbia does not have good relations with either Ecuador and Venezuela.

The relationship between Canada and Chile is one of the best in all of the Americas. Canada also has very good relations with Argentina and Brazil.

Support from Guyana, Suriname, is very important for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games bid. Toronto 2015 is lobbying very hard to get these Countries votes. David Peterson traveled to Guyana to met with the President of Guyana to talk about the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games bid. He pointed out the strong ties that Guyana shares to Canada and the great relationship that they have.

The President of Guyana was also in Toronto for the annual Guyana Day celebrations in Scarborough. Building on the strong ties between Guyana and Canada, Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games is looking for support from Guyana.

Jimjones both Lima and Bogoda did not show up for the CANOC meetings and Toronto was the only one to present. How does both Lima and Bogoda not showing up effect the CANOC members in South America.

I know Lima and Bogoda not showing up was not received well by the CANOC community.

Regardless Toronto 2015 is lobbying strong in both Guyana and Suriname.

Although the best friend of Chile is Canada at this moment, certainly they will vote for Lima or Bogotá. Chile will try to keep the friendship of Peru and Colombia, especially now we're pursuing Copa América 2015.

Peruvian and Chilean relationships are in their worst state in the last years but is possible that Chile could send a message of goodwill supporting Peru... and the relations with Colombia are good, probably the only country in SA that they could consider as a friend (with Brazil).

I think from what I am seeing of Guadalajara's new venues Mexico is going to be fine and comparable to Rio 2007, Toronto the only thing that i see as a weakness is the spread of the games footprint . There will be a point at which the scale will be more realistic . Lets Face it with Toronto and Rio you have two cities that are looking to stage the summer olympics in the future.

I looked over both Toronto and Peru venue plans and the distance between the events are the same. Peru's venue plan is actually more spread out then Toronto. If it is a problem for Toronto then it is also a problem for Peru.

Comparing the three bids Toronto by far is the best bid and strongest bid for a number and reasons.

The Athletes Village in Toronto has early construction work going on.

Also the Canadian Banking system was rated as the strongest in the World.

Pan American Games officials will put the GTA and Hamilton under the microscope this weekend.

Officials from five countries representing the Pan American Sports Organization will arrive in Toronto on Saturday night for a two-day tour.

They’ll be here to check out the Golden Horseshoe’s bid for the 2015 Games and compare facilities and plans with those of fellow bidders Lima, Peru, and Bogota, Colombia.

They are expected to visit key venues including the Air Canada Centre, Rogers Centre and Exhibition Place in Toronto.

Hamilton is poised to stage track and field and track cycling at new facilities, volleyball at Copps Coliseum, soccer at McMaster University and aquatics training at a new pool at Mac.

Burlington is slated for a stadium to host early round soccer.

with the CNE providing some lively action — as well potential sites like the athletes' village on the waterfront and in Hamilton.

Chris Rudge, the CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, believes the Golden Horseshoe cities involved in the push for the 2015 sports showcase are in good shape to receive the evaluation panel.

"They will check to see there is a plan in place and that you are capable of staging the Games. They will report on those aspects and don't usually recommend who should be awarded the Games."
