Ticats boss pledges millions to Pan Am stadium

February 09, 2009

John Kernaghan

The Hamilton Spectator

Hamilton Tiger-Cats owner Bob Young says the football team and other private sources would bring “millions to tens of millions” to a $150-million Pan Am Games stadium and the Ticats’ new home.

And Young said today he would be talking to most members of city council to explain why he feels the stadium is important to the city.

“I’m just one vote but I’m also the prime tenant of the stadium.”

Young stressed about $56 million from the provincial and federal governments towards a 24,000- to 27,000-seat stadium is ”a once-in-50-year opportunity.”

Pan Am pool for Hamilton?

Announcement expected at noon today

February 11, 2009

The Hamilton Spectator

http://www.thespec.com/News/Local/article/511394

Pan Am bid chairman David Peterson is expected to deliver some good news when he speaks in Hamilton today: a major new swimming pool for the city is back in the bid.

A source close to the bid confirmed yesterday that if the Toronto 2015 bid is successful, a new 50-metre pool would be built at McMaster University, in a new building adjacent to the existing pool, which would remain in use.

"It's huge, when you start thinking about it, the number of people who could use a second pool," the source said. "It's something that would be good for the next 50 years."

Hopes for a new permanent pool in Hamilton appeared to have been dashed last month when the province cut $300 million from its $1.8-billion Games budget.

But the source said circumstances have changed, creating a new opportunity for a "legacy" pool project that could go with a new stadium, which is also part of the bid to host the Games in and around Toronto.

Though financing details were not immediately available, the source confirmed that McMaster would become a partner in building the pool, a project expected to be worth $35 million.

Peterson, a former premier of Ontario, is to speak to the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce at noon today, when the announcement is expected.

Pan Am bid needs Hamilton: Peterson

February 11, 2009

http://www.thespec.com/News/Local/article/511394

Pan Am bid chairman David Peterson made it clear today that the games bid needs Hamilton, and Hamilton needs the bid.

"This is an incredible opportunity for Hamilton to increase its sports infrastructure," said Peterson. "We want Hamilton to be an integral part of this Bid, and now is the time to get on board."

Peterson made the comments in remarks to the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce today.

Earlier, a source close to the bid had confirmed that if the Toronto 2015 bid was successful, a new 50-metre pool would be built at McMaster University, in a new building adjacent to the existing pool, which would remain in use.

"It's huge, when you start thinking about it, the number of people who could use a second pool," the source said. "It's something that would be good for the next 50 years."

The current plan has the city hosting track and field at a new stadium. Hamilton also would receive a portable velodrome for track cycling, and is to host volleyball at Copps Coliseum.

The bid brings back hopes for a new permanent pool in Hamilton that had appeared to have been dashed last month when the province cut $300 million from its $1.8-billion Games budget.

Downtown councillor Bob Bratina said the Games are a huge opportunity for the city.

“I believe we have a rare opportunity to create an asset for our City's future, just as they did in 1930 building the municipal pool and civic stadium for the British Empire games. These facilities are still in use almost 80 years later.”

But Ward 4 councillor Sam Merulla maintains his opposition, saying the money is better spent on other projects.

“We have a $180-million hard infrastructure deficit. Any money considerations should be allocated to fast-track those important projects," he said. "Anything other than that would be irresponsible.

Rio de Janiero, Brazil hosted the 2007 Games and Guadalajara, Mexico will host the 2011 Games.

The Bid already has been warmly received by the Canadian sporting community and has the support of all three levels of government, including more than a dozen municipalities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

Hamilton called on to play key role in Pan Am Games Bid

HAMILTON, ON, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - Toronto 2015 Bid Chair David Peterson today made it clear that the Pan Am Games Bid needs Hamilton, and Hamilton needs the Bid.

"This is an incredible opportunity for Hamilton to increase its sports infrastructure," said Peterson. "We want Hamilton to be an integral part of this Bid, and now is the time to get on board."

Hamilton is slated to play a central role in the Games. The current plan has the city hosting perennial Games' favourite track and field (Athletics) at a new stadium. Hamilton also will receive a portable velodrome for track cycling, and is slated to host volleyball, another of the Games' most popular sports, at Copps Coliseum.

Mr. Peterson made the comments in remarks to the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce today.

The Bid already has been warmly received by the Canadian sporting community and has the support of all three levels of government, including more than a dozen municipalities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The Bid Book outlining operations and infrastructure plans is due to the Pan American Sports Organization, responsible for the hosting decision, in April 2009.

No Hamilton stadium in Pan Am plan

Council still to back taxpayer cash

February 18, 2009

John Kernaghan

The Hamilton Spectator

http://www.thespec.com/News/Local/article/515486

The venue plan for the 2015 Pan Am Games bid will be unveiled today despite missing the second-largest component -- a Hamilton stadium -- and other facilities.

"Some things are not finalized, like Hamilton, but we decided to announce venues as there has been some pressure to show where we are," said Toronto 2015 chair David Peterson.

Hamilton city council is expected to vote Monday on whether to make a financial commitment to the games and choose one of three sites for the new stadium.

A $35-million, 50-metre training pool for McMaster University will be unveiled today as part of the plan.

Mac is picking up 44 per cent of the cost, and the federal and provincial governments are funding 56 per cent between them.

Peterson said bid officials would like to see some city come forward with a plan for a permanent velodrome, but he suspects the bid book for the games, due April 30, will contain a temporary facility.

Andrew Iler, president of the National Cycling Centre -- Hamilton, has been working on a proposal for a permanent indoor cycling track.

Burlington, meanwhile, is hoping for a secondary soccer venue, and St. Catharines, with a world-class rowing course, is expected to win rights to host that sport.

The only Pan Am venue bigger than the proposed Hamilton stadium is the athlete's village, which also won't be included in today's announcement.

Toronto 2015 is willing to pick up $56 million of a $100-million, 15,000-seat stadium in Hamilton, but the city is eyeing a 24,000- to 27,000-seat facility worth about $150 million that would be home to the Tiger-Cats. It would require about $94 million from the city and private partners to build.

Pan Am plans permanent velodrome for city

February 18, 2009

A permanent velodrome is back in the 2015 Pan Am Games bid and organizers hope to twin it with a new stadium in Hamilton.

But city council must still decide if it will back the Pan Am Games bid. Councillors are divided on spending millions when Hamilton is facing an economic crisis.

Bid CEO Jagoda Pike told the Spectator today there is new velodrome technology available that makes a permanent facility more affordable.

The velodrome had been dropped from the bid a few weeks ago in cost cutting.

"The technology available now means you can build a velodrome at a much more economical price," Pike said as the 2015 bid committee released a full list of proposed venue locations in an announcement in Toronto today.

The VeloPlex building cited as a possibility for Hamilton consists of a concrete pad, track and steel walls and fabric roof.

The company website explained one model would be able to seat 2,000 around the track and 500 inside the oval.

The U.S. company claims it can be built at a fraction of previous velodromes and also says the Canadian company, Summit Structures, can erect one in 12 weeks.

Highlights of the venue list include using Toronto’s Rogers Centre for Pan Am Games opening and closing ceremonies and baseball. 2015 Pan Am chair David Peterson said the venue list is a key component for a winning bid.

“We have come up with an exciting and achievable plan that is good for Toronto, good for the Greater Golden Horseshoe region and good for an excellent games,” said Peterson

Basketball would be at the air Canada Centre and soccer at BMO field.

Varsity Stadium would host the Parapan Am Games opening and closing ceremonies.

And Burlington’s Sherwood Park would also be a football site

The venue list reflects the plan to divide Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area into three game zones, central, east and west.

“We have a first-rate plan that’s evolved out of a tremendous spirit of collaboration and partnership of the federal government, Ontario, many municipalities, the Canadian Olympic Committee and others that have come forward to support these Games,” said Jagoda Pike, Toronto 2015 president and COO and former publisher of The Hamilton Spectator.

Toronto 2015 Pan Am bid team unveils venue plan

Games will generate jobs and needed infrastructure investment across Greater Golden Horseshoe

TORONTO, Feb. 18 /CNW/ - The Hon. David Peterson, Chair of the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games Bid, revealed today a venue plan that will see Games events staged in Toronto and across the Greater Golden Horseshoe region over 25 days in July and August, 2015.

"The venue plan is a critical component of our bid to host the 2015 Pan and Parapan Am Games," said Peterson. "We have come up with an exciting and achievable plan that is good for Toronto, good for the Greater Golden Horseshoe region and good for an excellent Games."

The 2015 Pan Am Games would run for 17 days, July 10 to 26, followed by the Parapan Games running for eight days, August 7 to 14. The venue plan combines using new and existing facilities in Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe for competitions, training facilities, Games operations and

accommodations for athletes and officials.

The Games would bring a total $1.4 billion injection of federal, provincial, municipal and private funding into sports infrastructure for broad

community benefits and long-term athlete development in Ontario for years to come. It would also trigger more than 15,000 jobs in construction, tourism and event support.

"We have a first-rate plan that's evolved out of a tremendous spirit of collaboration and partnership of the federal government, Ontario, many

Pan Am plans sees stadium, velodrome, pool for Hamilton

February 18, 2009

John Kernaghan

The Hamilton Spectator

http://www.thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/515719

TORONTO - Hamilton’s role in the 2015 Pan Am Games plan was restored to senior partner today.

It is the second most active city behind Toronto in a Games blueprint that stretches from a welcome centre in Niagara Falls to whitewater canoe/kayak at Minden. The list of cities, venues and the 38 sports they would host were laid out today at a media conference.

Toronto 2015 has pencilled in Steeltown for a 15,000-seat stadium, permanent velodrome and 50-metre training pool.

“Hamilton would host the two most popular Pan Am Games sports: athletics and volleyball,” said bid CEO Jagoda Pike.

The 15,000-seat stadium and velodrome could turn Hamilton into Canada’s hotbed in athletics and cycling, she added.

On top of track and field at the stadium and volleyball at Copps Coliseum, there would be track cycling at a $11-million velodrome twinned with the stadium, soccer at McMaster University’s Ron Joyce Stadium and aquatics training at a Mac pool worth $35 million.

The Pan Am Games version of the Paralympics, the Parapan Games, would stage track at the new stadium and train at Mac.

At one point several weeks ago, it looked as if the pool and velodrome were off the table.

Pike noted the “cluster” of venues for Hamilton would put the city in a good position to enjoy other growth initiatives the provincial government is working on in transportation and other fields.

“It would be a shame to see Hamilton miss the growth train,” the former Hamilton Spectator publisher said.

She said her affection for Hamilton didn’t sway decision-making but added she wouldn’t be surprised some cities who didn’t get what they wanted will complain Hamilton did so well in the distribution of venues.

Meantime, Burlington got its wish with a soccer facility at Sherwood Forest Park to play early-round games and host several national teams.

St. Catharines’ world-class Henley rowing course was predictably picked and Welland won the right to stage sprint canoe/kayak racing.

The Games footprint is divided into three main clusters with a central zone of Toronto and surrounding cities. Toronto will host 22 sports, many at existing facilities, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies at the Rogers Centre, media and broadcast centre and athletes’ village.

Hamilton and Burlington are the western cluster, St. Catharines and Welland the south and Ajax, Oshawa and Whitby comprise the east grouping.

My biggest problem with this bid is the location of the main Athletics stadium.

Why would they have the Athletics Stadium in a city that's a minimum 1 hour drive from downtown Toronto where the Athlete's Village will be located. Athletics fields a large number of athlete's. It's pretty stupid in my opinion and one of the biggest weaknesses in this bid.

$1-million bubble roof would cover Hamilton Pan Am stadium

The Hamilton Spectator

Hamilton's Pan Am stadium proposal includes a $1-million bubble roof that would extend use of the facility to 12 months a year.

The fabric dome would be installed to cover the playing field in the winter months, said David Adames, executive director of Tourism Hamilton.

He stressed the roof would fit into a stadium design that can be enlarged from 15,000 to 30,000 seats.

Adames said the city would explore other engineering breakthroughs to maximize use of a $100-million stadium.

City council will vote on a $60 million plan to build the 15,000-seat stadium for track and field and construct a permanent $11.4-million velodrome for track cycling

The stadium could be expanded later if enough private partners backed the larger facility.

Copps Coliseum would be used for volleyball and McMaster University has been designated for a $35-million pool within the 2015 Games plan.

I agree it is a huge weakness really . The only solution I can see for Hamilton to be involved is if they day camped or even made McMaster University in Hamilton a Second Athletes Village which is very possible considering the modern Sports facilities they have on Campus.

The Thing is Both Bogota and Lima are not showing up to Lobby and perhaps this emboldens the Bid Committee for Toronto 2015 ? Toronto GTA's situation with Finances probably would not garner much for an Athletics stadium as they certainly have a good inventory of Stadiums and Arenas Now . With Hamilton you have a CFL team that would move in to a new stadium after the games with Toronto it would be a white Elephant with no real tenant . Hamilton does not have the drawing power for PASO votes and Toronto with the Drawing power for Name ID doesn't really need the games to build a stadium that would sit empty. It is a case of Two Boats tied together in a Canal Lock thus floating better.

Pan Am Games bid gets critical endorsement

Both Toronto and Hamilton City Councils vote to bring Games local

TORONTO, Feb. 23 /CNW/ - The Hon. David Peterson, Chair of the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games Bid, congratulated Councils of the City of Toronto and the City of Hamilton on their decisions today to participate in the Games, which will see Games events hosted at existing and new legacy venues throughout each city.

"The Councils of both Toronto and Hamilton each have made an important and valuable decision that will provide these communities jobs, tourists, international profile, home-town improvements and a strong platform for opportunities into the future," said Peterson. "I'd like to congratulate both Toronto Mayor David Miller and Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger for their partnership in helping us drive the Games vision forward. Not only will their communities benefit, but so will the entire region."

Both the Councils of the City of Toronto and the City of Hamilton voted today in favour of hosting 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games events in these communities. Hosting requires shared investment in building new venues or retrofitting existing facilities.

Venue highlights in Toronto include the new Pan Am Games Aquatics Centre, the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario and a number of venue upgrades among others. Venue highlights in Hamilton include a new 15,000-seat stadium, a permanent velodrome and a 50-metre competitive pool.

Next milestones in the bid include submitting the bid book by the end of April to the Games governing body, the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO). The final decision on which bidder will be the 2015 host is expected to be made by PASO in the fall.

Is it just me or does everything seem a bit here and there?

I'm sure a Games in Toronto would be a success but the approach to devise the venue plan seems a bit disjointed.

It is indeed but Toronto's bid organizers are pretty confident that they will win regardless due to the lack of competition. We all know this isn't the strongest venue arrangement but I'm sure they're thinking its good enough to win the Pan Am Games. It definitely wouldn't be up to par if submitted for an Olympic bid.

I am Actually waiting for Mo's minions to reveal the fact that Bogota Colombia has the Highest crime rate in the World including their homicide rate. Yeah that would be in character

As too and olympic bid well Toronto has tried twice and Jacques Rogge is now phrasing Toronto as a place that could have a strong bid. Lets Face it he is probably right on that account but realistically a summer games is at least 25 to 30 year off for Canada. Building an Athletics Stadium with the Hope of staging the Olympics in Toronto is not realistic at this point

A possible new tenant for the new Hamilton stadium......

TICATS' OWNER YOUNG TRYING TO BRING USL TEAM TO HAMILTON

http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/story/?id=268484&...secStory_soccer

Hamilton Tiger-Cats owner Bob Young announced Tuesday that the team has begun the process of applying for a United Soccer League franchise for the city of Hamilton, contingent on the construction of a new stadium.

"As a minority owner of the USL's Carolina Railhawks, I'm personally aware of the growing popularity of USL soccer across North America and would be thrilled to see a Hamilton team play in a league with the great Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps franchises," Young said in a statement.

"We have been investigating the economic viability of a professional soccer team in Hamilton for a number of years and with the possibility of a new stadium on the horizon, we felt that this is the right time to begin the application process."
