Will The American President Speak French For Chicago 2016?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious as to what extent Obama or Mcain will support the Chicago 2016 bid. Both Tony Blair and President Putin made an appearance in some shape or form, and chose to use a language other than their own, to address the IOC during the bid city presentations.

I think it's fair to say that the attendance of Tony Blair in Singapore had an impact on IOC members. I also remember hearing how impressed the IOC were when Putin made the effort to speak in English during his pre-recorded presentation.

I'm certain Hilary Clinton would have jumped through hoops to get Chicago the Games - even speaking French if she had to. Will Obama or Mcain be so willing, and how will Americans feel about their new President addressing the IOC in French?

LOL @ Baron

Look's like Hilary's back in then!

Here's Obama at the celebration for making the short list:

and Chicago 2016's article about his visit:

http://www.chicago2016.org/News/Pages/Obam...DaleyPlaza.aspx

“Bringing the Olympics to Chicago will be a capstone of the success that we’ve had over the past couple decades in transforming Chicago to become not just a great American City but a great world city.” He noted that he lives only a few blocks away from the proposed site of the Olympic Stadium in Washington Park. “In 2016, I’ll be wrapping up my second term as president, so I can’t think of a better way than to be marching into Washington Park alongside Mayor Daley, alongside Rahm Emanuel, alongside Dick Durbin, alongside Valerie Jarrett, as president of the United States and announcing to the world, ‘Let the Games begin!’”

and one of Obama's effort at Spanish (according to him, he's never studied a second language):

So, it wouldn't be out of the question for him to try French (which is somewhat easier on the English speaking voice than Spanish, by the way) in 2009 if he's president.

McCain's record with IOC and his policies towards the non-US world, though, is less likely to be helpful.

I think it is pretty safe to say that Obama would make more of an effort for Chicago 2016 than McCain.

Sure, both want the Games here, but McCain probably wouldn't go much out of his way. Will they speak another language? Who knows. Obama probably didn't speak German, because he didn't want to be seen as "mimicking" or putting himself on the same level as JFK.

I highly doubt either one wold speak French.

Your also talking about two European leaders who were trying to sway European votes, speaking the two dominate languages of Europe. I think the European delegations are savy enough to know that in North America, English and Spanish are the two predominate languages.

if Obama wins, as evidence by his really powerful speech a few days back in Denver, he would make a clear case for Chicago even clearer.

I agree... If it's Obama, I don't think it'll matter what language he has to speak. I think it'll sound great enough in English. And don't count Mayor Daley out... He has been in office since the dawn of time.
