baron-pierreIV Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 While I have not found his small bits of grandstanding too offensive (and of course US athletes, espcially the T&F kind, were guilty of it in previous Olympics), Usain Bolt has been chided by IOC president, Jacques Rogge, for his 'disrespectful' behaviour toward his fellow athletes. Good on ya, Jacques!! This 'showboating' by dumb athletes should be put in its proper place and perspective. They are such 'whores' for attention and ALSO wouldn't be for people who put them on pedestals and lick their ass*s. They are simple human beings. They have their 15 mins of fun and fame -- and that's it. It's not like it's the greatest human achievement under the sun. But it wouldn't be that way, if they weren't lionized. I think the IOC should just cut press accreditations to 3 (NBC, BBC and al Jazeera!!)!!!

Bolt is amazing, he can do what he wants in my opinion. This achievement surpasses anything Michael Phelps could do in the swimming pool. The Lightning Bolt!! Love his style.

Phelps has 8 Beijing gold, 7 world records, and 1 Olympic record. Those will go next to his 6 Athens gold, and 2 Athens bronze, 1 done in world record time, 3 in Olympic record time. Bolt's achievement is impressive. Thrilling. Iconic even, for having claimed the two fastest times ever in two very hot events. But you can't deny the place that Michael Phelps will have in Olympic history. No one has achieved what he has achieved. Whereas Bolt's double gold achievement has at least been done twice.

But in defense of Bolt, no one has ever broken the WR in both events at the same Olympics before. What's scary is if he had not been showing off what the record in the 100m could have been. And he's still got the 4x100m relay. Any way you slice it, it's an accomplishment. THAT being said... I didn't think he was terribly out of line, but yeah, he should ease off a bit. The celebrating was a bit excessive.

Phelps is magnificent at what he does, but when you compare it Bolts success, you have to factor in some issues. Athletics will be and has always been the glamour event of the Olympics. A success on the track almost always eclipses those of the other sports, it`s just the way it has always been. Be it right or wrong. The way in which Bolt won the 100m, was UNBELIEVABLE. I`m still in awe of what he did on a few nights ago, then to follow it up with the new WR in 200m... amazing. Phelps has been going well for years, he was expected to do very very well in Beijing. Bolt took most people by surprise, another reason for the hype. If Phelps is amazing, Bolt is legendary.

The glamour of athletics has diminished since the doping scandals, and this year, it was all about the Water Cube. It's incomporable. Phelps will be a legend in years coming, and who knows, maybe Bolt will too. But it's been Phelps' Games.

No. he got the Olympic Record in the 200m, not the WR. The way in which Bolt crushed the fields in the 2 events further adds to his superioty. I`m not diminishing Phelps, he is a wonderful athlete. But Bolt has redefined Sprinting and brought Athletics away from its reputation of `winning only by doping`. That also adds to his success.

Without looking it up, name the swimmer who won the most gold at the Munich Olympics and then name the sprinter who won the 100 and 200 m at those very same games. (yes, I had to look the second one up)

Records in swimming are broken on a daily bases it would seem so :s Every time there is a competion records fall. In Athletics world records are hard to come by. But Carl Lewis did it in 1984. Jesse Owens did it in 1936. Valeri Borzov did it in Munich. The world records put Bolt in a special place amongst that league, no doubt. But in 2096 when the "Greatest Athletes of the Second Olympic Century" is published, Phelps will rank higher than Bolt.

Yea, he was grandstanding at the end of the 100, but I guess if I was as young as him and this had happened to me, I would probably do the same thing. Much ado about nothing on Rogge's part IMHO.
