Well, first athletic action at the Bird's Nest this morning (see some heptathlon heats so far) and gotta say the stadium is decked out impressively. Looks like a great venue. Now for the action!

Early results for Canada: Neil Armstrong qualified for the shot put final on his first attempt, while Zelinka finished second of Heptathlons first event, the 100m hurdles.

Also Pierre Brown has advanced, so its been a good day for the Canadians in the Bird's Nest.

A Canadian finished 6th in the 200m breaststroke, which was a strong result.

The cauldron looks great up there! Blends well with the rim of the nest.

The stadium looks so massive.

The top sprinters were jogging their way through to the 2nd round and still timed at about 0.3s - 0.4s off their best. It just shows how much effort is required to run just a tad bit faster.

The first gold medal for new zealand in athletics since john walker won gold in 1976 and the first field gold for new zealand since 1952! Amazing result for Valerie Vili! This caps off a brilliant day for new zealand!

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the next Ben Johnson!

Come on, he improved the world record by two hundredths in May and now by four hundredths?

This can't be for real!

He could have easily done a 9.4! Man.. that guys is fast.. look at how far he was way ahead of the rest..

He didn't even remain in his sprinter position throughout the whole race, he already celebrated about five or ten metres in front of the line -- that means that he could have run even faster!

Once more: With natural means, this is impossible!
