NYCD 2012 Posted August 14, 2008 Report Share Posted August 14, 2008 The women and men team events are well underway. I may sound baised here but its Singapore only hopes of a medal ! Anyway , here are the countries that have qualified for the Women Team SEMIS : China, Singapore, United States, Austria, Japan and South Korea. The big unknown is in Group C , Hong Kong, Romania & Poland are fighting for the two spots left. For the men , the following have qualified, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Japan & Hong Kong. The second placed team can only participate in the Bronze playoff, plus contend with challenges from the two losing teams of the semis. The Second semi between Singapore & South Korea starts at 14.30 , the winner will face either China or Hong Kong ! If Singapore wins this, they would proceed to the finals. It would mean either a silver or gold for Singapore, finally breaking the 48 year medal drought for Singapore at the olympics ! If Singapore wins this one, it will be assured of an Olympic medal for the first time since 1950. Its South Korea's Kim Kyung Ah, the same player who denied Singapore's Li Jiawei a Bronze medal four years ago. Li took the first game, but Kim took the second. Li just won the third by a narrow 11-9 score, and she can hardly consider this a done deal. Jiawei, be patient, and the game is yours! JIA YOU!! Er...in Table Tennis Singapore is the undisputed kingpins in Southeast Asia, having swept almost all the golds in the past few SEAgames and being consistently amongst the highest ranked. The first Singles match was won by Singapore and the second by South Korea. Each side must win another two more games before victory is there's, so this is a correction to a comment I made earlier where I said Singapore must win all the rest of the matches. For the record, the Singapore pair has never been able to beat the South Korean pair. The first games has just been completed, and its 11-7 in Singapore's favour. Can they keep the momentum going? Thank you You mean the overall medal standings? Oh of course Singapore is nowhere in sight. We haden't won any Olympic medal since 1960! If they loose the match, they still stand a chance for the Bronze, but they will have to win two matches just to win that. Indeed! Table tennis is a very fast game and quite entertaining to watch. I am in a bundle of nerves now however...haha. Singapore has closed the Korean lead and they are now at 5-5! Having just played the doubles, Wang will have to recover fast, but she is known to be the most patient player of the three, which may be an advantage when dealing with the Koreans who are known to be defensive players.
