You Know What I'd Like To See Next Time?

Recommended Posts

track & field first, swimming second. why do they always lead with swimming? are they trying to hold an ace for advertisers because they know more people watch track and they don't want people to lose interest halfway through the games and stop watching altogether?

I think planning logistics will prevent atheletics from starting too early. Remember, the opening ceremony is held in the same venue and I'd imagine it would take some time to get everything cleaned up and ready for track and field.

Actually because of NBC's advice to the Athens 2004 committee, which was running hugely behind for construction of Venues. A system from Roswell, Georgia was brought in that grows Grass turf in TRAYs that standard fork lifts can transport. The Turf is grown and groomed outside the Stadium . Change over to athletics was over night in Athens 2004's Case after the opening ceremonies. The Birds Nest is using the exact same system called Greentech ITC . Uefa and Fifa now allow this system and it is even in place at Wimbelton among others.

The Reason Aquatics was probably put forward is the special interest of Michael Phelps potentially making history and thus NBC could get US viewers in the Habit straight away to then continue thru the rest of the Games with a Feel good story of Phelps. For NBC this would hopefully overcome people turning away from Athletics or Track and Field as it is called in America which is generally a ratings dog. THe Games are Staged managed by NBC lock stock and barrel.

What good would having the Michael Phelps story play out in the last week of the Summer Games for NBC ? This way they grab the huge 17.7 rating and 30 share they have had over the first week and then they are able to make more ad sales for the last week on that strenght. It also goes for the Local NBC Stations that pay into the 900 million dollar plus Tv rights package in the US.

The IOC considers swimming and athletics to be their "bookends." At the start of the Games, they want people to tune in to a sport that has lots of medals, and the same at the end. The biggest names in sport are in these 2 sports.

These two sports are what TOP is really designed for. Everything else is "interesting" but doesn't attract the kind of audiences that the TOP sponsors demand.

The IOC will never change.

The scheduling varies from Games to Games; that's why (for example) Canada traditionally has few if any medals in the first week, and most in the second week.

Nothing to do with Michael Phelps. Aquatics was not brought forward. The opening week of the games, certainly for a long time now, traditionally starts with swimming in the first week and athletics closes it, with the middle weekend traditionally the big events days, with the last swim finals and the start of the big athletic events including the 100m finals and the most finals medals to be awarded acros a range of sports. And the mens marathon, of course, is always the closing event of every games.

Maybe it might be different if ceremonies and athletics were held in different stadiums, but it still takes more than an overnight switch of trays of grass to change from a ceremonies field to a T&F field.

In one of the NBC 'Up Close and Personal' stories, it took Beijing 30 hours to lay their infield with the grass layer you know see.

The grass grown for Birds Nest was specially grown with the help of Michigan State University experts.

Well if that is true, ABC must have done the same deal in 1972, because the Jewish Mark Spitz was shipped out of Munich after the terrorist attack on Team Israel. He and all 7 golds arrived in London days after the attack and in the second week of the Games.

NBC did request that the swimming events be held in the Beijing morning so as to be aired live in the American prime time, but they didn't cause any change in the long-term schedule because the schedule has been this way for decades. Gymnastics and Swimming dominate the first week. Athletics and Team sports dominate the second.
