London's Cauldron Will Be Outside Stadium

I think they look lovely, I suppose I am a tad biased though. So far I have sorted the mascot, done the cauldron and given my version of the handover ceremony, somebody stop me. If only all the London whingers in this forum put in as much effort in visualising things or coming up with concepts as they do bitching about the 2012 games we'd have the whole thing licked by now ; )

Or not....

We'd have the Princess Diana memorial stadium with an effegy of Ken burning upon the coal-fired Olympic flame. The stadium would be an iconic design, because we have to outdo Beijing, but it would cost less than the price of a walnut whip....'cos that's what we were promised innit! Our logo, a British Bulldog smoking a cigar standing on top of Big Ben with the word 'London' in comic sans, would be projected all over the iconic cut-price stadium whilst any dancers even attempting to do anything even remotely resembling hip-hop are escorted away to make room for the GREAT BRITISH military tattoo. Any girly sports like syncro and 'those poncey dancing horses' will be banned and not-so-Great Britain will have four seperate football teams because, when it comes to football the notion that we should unite for a one off event is tantamount to treachary. Also, Gymnastics will be banned in case a paeodophile manages to get hold of tickets (no cameras allowed at the swimming pool for the same reason). You get the picture....

Or alternativley it'd be in Paris.

Or throw a flaming javelin

I like the idea. I was thinking of that too but is it possible? It sounds dangerous with all the national teams in the stadium.

For the Cauldron, I was thinking of a Helsinki-style tower right next to the stadium. I'm thinking of a water fountain... the water falls down to a huge fountain so the cauldron won't produce fire only but water too. I don't know... they already did everything... creativity is so tough.

Salt Lake played a bit with water within the top of the cauldron but it was mostly to keep the glass from getting charred. I wish that the water was allowed to cascade down but I guess they also worried about ice build up.

I think it'd be tough to get water to cascade down as it would take enormous amounts of energy to power such a pump and would in no way, shape, or form would be "green".

I ve now sorted the cauldron lighting

The second to last torch bearer Steve Redgrave our greatest Olympian climbs the tower to the top and we find Tom Daley there, the torch passes to him its the great Olympian passing to the new Olympian, after a bit of showing the torch he strikes his diving pose and dives off the tower to the cauldron below. The cauldron is a ring doughnut shape so he passes straight through the hole in the middle lighting the flame as he passes landing below on a massive cushion that isnt seen by the camera. Simple, graceful, spectacular. Does that sound a tad dangerous?

^ Sounds the complete opposite of Cathy Freeman's job in Sydney.

But yes, likely the cauldron will become a permanent piece of public art to remind us of 2012, seeing that the stadium will be transformed into something smaller after the games.

Yeah good point. I always thought the Sydney lighting was just too technical. Thats just my opinion though. I love simplicity like Barcelona, it was an athlete doing what he does and lighting it with his arrow. A diver diving and lighting it would I feel be so graceful and simplistic. I think its totally un-dooable though, too dangerous.

OK, have a random idea for the cauldron. A soaring spire that curves up to a coiled series of "petals". Like a giant flower in bloom, it opens up once the flame is lit. As it opens, the flame gets larger. Then at the closing, the "petals" close up and seal the flame's demise.

I remember this being proposed by someone here for Beijing's cauldron set-up - They can light it inside the stadium during the Opening Ceremony, in whatever way they want, and most importantly - in view of everyone inside (this wouldn't be the case if it was lit at the tower outside ala Torino). Then the next day, take the flame outside (whether that means transferring it via torch to an identical cauldron outside) and light it at the top of this tower. They can make it a free-Ceremony type event for anyone enjoying opening weekend at London's Olympic Park.

Totally agree! That's what I think should always be the essence of lighting the cauldron, having the athletes do what he does best (without being too out of character eg. Beijing's circus act). Or it can just be as simple as Athens's way, just lit the bloody cauldron by climbing up the steps and touch it. At least this way theres' still some prestigeous/ dignity maintained.

I kinda like the idea that there's another free 'public' ceremony the day after, very in-tuned with London's concept of getting everybody involved. Just have to think of a way of transfering the flame without belittling the whole ceremony the night before. A sacred yet not too casual transferring ceremony..

I think LOCOG will be cautioned by would-be Ceremonies bidders, to hold off on that outside cauldron tower. Otherwise, they would be limited to Atlanta-Torino schemes for lighting that darn thing.

I doubt their options would be limited that much, but if they were convinced to change their plans, where else would they place it?

That roof won't be as sturdy as Beijing's and a Seoul-type set-up may not work for various reasons. Only place left is outside somewhere.

Being a temorary stadium, if it's given enough thought, I am sure they can tweak the basic plans a bit to accommodate a really startling Lighting scenario. It's not like some structural integrity will be sacrificed a great deal.

  • 11 months later...

I have an idea. Cauldron top shaped similar to that of of a diamond, floats along the canal towards the stadium, glowing of course.

As it is near to the stadium the diamond flower stops, and is lifted up by a giant tall structure column rising out of the water.

The skylon like tower rests in the water near the stadium....

might be a bit too far for spectators to see though

Actually i like the idea of a Caulrdon outside the Stadium. It should be something elegant,.. not too massive.. More like a sculpture then a tower..

:lol::lol:

Well,

1. The Final runner/athlete has to come into the stadium and be seen by one and all;

2. And then somehow, the flame must be TRANSFERRED to the Cauldron. SO it's either:

i. a direct touch (i.e., Lillehammer, Sydney, Nagano) or

ii. via some interim mechanism.

Other than the arrow thing (been there; done that); an outside tower-cauldron really poses problems for a dramatic Lighting.

So maybe, as pictured above, Mary Poppins comes in; Peter Pan shows up & grabs it from her; she knocks him on the had with her umbrella -- but then Harry Potter shows up and lights it!!

PERFECTION ! There can be no other way . Everyone phone LOCOG !

I'd prefer a cauldron that hangs above the field but not sure the IOC would be keen.

I really like the idea of having the flame high up outside the stadium,

Visible from all the vantage points in London ,

May be the caldron could be lit inside the stadium then some how made to fly up and out, and attach itself to the top of the tower/sculpture outside the stadium.

I just realized with Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, and Harry Potter -- the whole scheme could be codenamed the "P" Plan until it is revealed!! :D
