Make that three Gold! That equals our best ever single day gold tally at a games.

And that puts us, for the moment at least, in third spot on the medal tally.

Good work.... Your most successful gold day at the games! What did it beat?

One of our commentators mentioned that, and I've been trying to confirm it all morning. We've won three golds in a day before at Melbourne, Sydney and Athens, so yesterday equalled it.

Some random thoughts on the games>>>

*Can't wait for the final of the Men's Hockey. After Athens there will be some tension in the air...assuming we make it.

*You would think most Aussies would be rather annoyed, maybe even jealous of GB getting up on us in the medal count...From what i can gather, most Australian's a very proud of GB's performace in Beijing. Not only looking forward to more rivalry, but also very proud of their success.

*2 Australian's through the first round of the table tennis! WOW, big achievement for a country that still calls it ping-pong.

*The Big M (Craig Mottram) still to come on the track. Looking forward to that.

*USA v Boomers basketball; Bogut :Watch out, we're coming for you"...HAHA.

Wont the Australians be disappointed to be beaten by the great british team?

Well, yes, of course. Mind you, there's still total medals to count (though it's sad day to see us rsorting to counting our minor medals in order to compare ourselves to Blighty _ and we still my no win that on either).

Generally, though, I think we really are genuinely happy to see Team GB do so well. Our favourite sporting rivalry is with you guys, and it really is good for that tradition to see a real contest. Delhi 2010 is going to be hotly competitive now, and you couldn't get a better shot in the arm to lift British enthusiasm for London 2012. And it gives us a target to aim for now (though it might take till 2016 before we regain the "Ashes". GB did what they hoped and promised and more. We admire sporting excellence and good competition. You SHOULD be proud.

I`m German, not British. I just study in London, and I HOPE Germany beat both Australia and GB.

Speaking as an Australian myself, I am not dissapointed that 'Great Britain' is doing better in the medal tally, matter of fact, I say "Well Done!!!". I know that there is an innate sense of rivalry between these two countries, but I rather think that this will make us even more determined to beat them in 2012. We definately have to regroup and learn from these games, in order to maintain our place in the Olympics in the future, hopefully we can only get better.

But maybe for Team GB it will be the case in 2012, of "Letting them have their cake and eat it too..."

Oh, Congrats to Anna Meares in the Women's Sprint, a silver medal!! Lol, at least we got one in

Sorry Kaufy, of course. I forgot who I was answering. And with a German Mum, Germany's my second team to follow too. I think it's most likely that Germany will overhaul Australia (though I hope, of course, we stay ahead), but I think GB has got too far past both of us now.

I think Australia will never do as well as in Sydney or Athens for a very long time. Hmm Cycling you won I think 4 or 5 golds in Athens? you only got 1 silver this time. Do you know what happened?

and the swimming, if liesel jones and trickett dont perform in London, where does Australia get their medals? Australia relied on swimming for its haul, now the mens team nearly didnt register on the medals table and the women had to rescue the team.

i`m not being heavy on Australia sorry. but I think they can only expect a modest total in london and the games in Rio in 2016.

You never know, 4 years is enough time to come back from where we are right now, more talent is yet to be found...... and why do you think its going to be in Rio for 2016?? But anyways, I am sure that we will do well in all the Olympics to come.

Actually, in terms of total medals, we had our best ever swim meet in Beijing. In terms of gold, it was only one behind Athens and two behind Melbourne 56. And people said without Ian Thorpe we would slump badly.

I agree, cycling was a failure. But all the more incentive to rebuild. And that was our failing _ not rebuilding in time.

I hope you do well, I like Australians.

Just can`t understand how the cycling went so wrong. and the means swimming team. You will come back probably.

I think South America deserve their time to shine in 2016.

but the Aussie swim team is fading. In terms of age and what can be expected in the future.

The women won 6 gold medals, the men won zero.

Yeah that was a real shame.... <_< , but again, we can only do better! Personally, I rather Chicago get it. Besides the main goal of the swim team for next time is to come back running and blow the Americans out of the water...... fingers crossed that it can happen in the future!!!

Don't underestimate our talent spotting and development programs.

I don`t underestimate Australia in swimming, of course I don`t.

With the amount of money you spend on swimming, I`m amazed you don`t win every gold medal.

It ebbs and flows. The days of Hackett and Thorpe are gone. Trickett et al will be there come London but expect names like Sullivan, Barrat, Campbell, Rickard, Seebohm, Sprenger, Targatt....the list goes on...to medal in London. All young, all gold chances.

The US has always dominated the golds in the pool. Australia seems to be the king pin when it comes to overall consistancy however.

We will never have a Michael Phelps, but a team of swimmers capable of medals.

Ryan Bailey made us a powerhouse in the Athens velodrome. His form slump really left us with nothing to hang onto. I would have liked Cadel Evans to do better in the road race though.

The fact that most Australian's are worried (and fear) about dropping out of the top5 in the medal count is an inspiring thought. The fact that we have built a culture that assumes nothing but being the best is quite outstanding considering where we have come from pre-Sydney or 1990's. I'm not trying to gloat about how high we finish in the tally; just pointing out how good it feels to be part of country that believes so heavily in sportin resilience.

It's more compared to other sports. But still minimal on a wider scale. Swimming is just something that comes natural here IMO.
