Sir Rols
Where are all the Aussies here? Are most of us over in Beijing. Anyway, not a bad start and cautious optimism for our team. John Coates indicated, though, that they had Michael Diamond and the road races pencilled in for medals, so our target goal (42-47 medals) may have to be reconsidered. Nice to see a few medals today from outside the pool _ the divers and Bell in the canoe slalom added some variety. Also seems the UK is shaping up as a worthy rival in the rankings at Beijing. I'm relishing a close battle of the Medal Ashes. And 2012 should be a great fight!
Citius Altius Fortius
I don't have the Aussie nationality, but I am an Aussie by heart!!! May I have a Cascade, please? This Aussie "Olympic Hotel" has become already a tradition! Edited August 12, 2008 by Citius Altius Fortius

Sir Rols
Just some piss-weak beer we sell to foreigners. Anyway, tell you what. I'll shout the bar (buy a round of drinks over) in the German team's thread if Germany wins an equestrian gold tonight, if you do the same here if Oz wins one. Sir Rols
And if the Brits or Kiwis win we'll have to buy them beers _ if the stingy Poms ever set up a bar here, that is, they may too scared they'll break the London 2012 hospitality budget! Sir Rols
Thanks! Bottom's up! Also, no medal, but a really great effort by the Aussie women's (girl's) gymnasts to finish sixth in the team event _ their highest finish ever. Sir Rols
Overall Aussies: how do you think your team are performing so far? Good question. In terms of Golds, well satisfied. We're definitely on, maybe even ahead, of target. We've pretty well achieved about all our goals in the pool (I never really rated Grant Hackett a chance in the 400m), and there's no reason not to expect there's another few to come from there as well. Indeed, for a swim team that often tends to start the big meets slow and build up, they've more than met expectations. And I suppose as Aussie's we're cocky enough to expect a few Golds elsewhere over the next week and a half as well. And there's some good chances still out there or yet to start competing. I'll be happy if we break double figures. Funnily enough it's the minor medals that worry me a bit. By this time in the past few games, we'd probably have a swag more silvers and bronzes to our tally. We've come through things like shooting and the cycling road races without a few minors, as we did in the past few games. The AOC's banking on 40 plus, and we're more than a quarter of the way their already, but I'd like a few more. I'd say obviously we'd be expected to ease in the count after Athens _ our performance there was our best ever, including Sydney, and the competition is getting hotter. But then again we'd been obviously expected to slump after Sydney and instead euphorically surprised ourselves. Our dream is to maintain fourth on the table. Our expectations and realistic hopes are probably fifth or sixth.
Sir Rols
Phew, at least we finishd on a high in the pool after the disappointment of Eamon Sullivan's touch-of for the 100m. I won't deny that was a disappointment to surrender the Gold to the French! But the 200m medly girls totally re-lifted the spirits! Good onya! And third Gold to Stephanie Rice. Surely the glamour girl of the games so far.
micheal_warren
cheers for that update! At least you have medals on the board... New Zealand arent getting much luck at the moment! Mahe Drysdale has come down sick in the rowing single sculls! Not a good sign at all!
ard72
Australia is 2 golds down compared to same point in Athens but same totals for silver and bronzes Probably should get 4 or 5 more swimming golds
Sir Rols
Well, a bit disappointing for us Gold-wise at the pool today, but two silvers can't be sneezed at). And a bronze in shooting helps us in the minor medals stakes as well - (the Olympic for and against).
micheal_warren
I see Australia won a bronze medal in the mens 50m rifle shooting! Great result!
Sir Rols
What a great night for Australia (and our Commonwealth cousins Canada, New Zealand and the UK) already! Australia's best ever single day result at the rowing _ three medals, two Gold and a Bronze. That's a big relief after being so dependent on the swimmers to now. Definitely a shot in the arm. Sir Rols
Make that three Gold! That equals our best ever single day gold tally at a games. And that puts us, for the moment at least, in third spot on the medal tally.
