mattygs Posted August 12, 2008 Report Share Posted August 12, 2008 The Lillehammer opening ceremony segment concept in terms of what was and wasnt live was very similar to Beijing actually. It basically started with the Olympic Broadcasting ident, that was fine. Then it was basically a bunch of skydivers, with bits and pieces of winter sport equipment strapped to them. They flew down and then graphics were kind of superimposed over to have them holding a giant Norwegian flag. Then you saw 4 guys skydiving down with the Norwegian flag into the arena. But only that was live, the other stuff was pre-recorded. Unfortunately now people , from reading various forums, people are saying all of the opening ceremony fireworks were cgi based, despite the fact that it was obvious we saw the real thing in 2 dress rehersals in addition to the actual night. The chopper was neva gonna keep up with 29 pyro bursts making its way up the central axis of Beijing, in such a close shot. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Olympian2004 Posted August 12, 2008 Report Share Posted August 12, 2008 I think what CAF wants to say is that it would be a very disappointing development if the future hosts start to mix pre-recorded or even computer generated scenes in the opening ceremony with the intension to give a "live feeling". In Athens it was absolutely clear for the viewer that the Acropolis view and the Journey to Ancient Olympia was prerecorded. Beijing tried to give the impression that the footstep fireworks are live and i am sure that many many viewers thought "wow this is awsome"... And I found it awesome even though I knew it was computer-generated! There are so many things that are computer-generated or at least based on special lighting effects at opening ceremonies, that this mix of real and artificial elements should really be nothing new or shocking for us. The lip-synch scandal, though, well, that leaves a bit of a nasty taste. The TV director could've chosen to go with LONG shots or CROWD SHOTS -- in other words, NO close-ups, so they could've gotten around NOT SHOWING Original Girl at ALL!! Since every host wants to outdo the previous host we will see more and more fakes - we should think about if we want that. What kind of manipulation is "O.K." - what kind of manipulation is "not O.K." The final extreme could be that we will see one day a computer-generated Opening Ceremony... Perhaps it was more *obvious* that the Athens to Olympia in the 2004 opening wasnt real - but at the end of the day, the concept is the same. Nothing more than an artistic piece of the ceremonies, using a pre-recorded video presentation. Adding to this, is the fact that it didnt take place in the stadium. No there is a slight difference...my point is, they did not make it up... the 29 fireworks were INDEED fired right before the ceremony, real time, but for techincality reason, they cannot possibly shoot it live stretching the sky of the whole city, so hey used a pre-recording from the rehearsal.
