baron-pierreIV
OK, so Yao is out. But he still got the 2nd most honored role -- flagbearer for China. So my guess for the Final Torchbearer will be an Earthquake Survivor or Xiaosahuang Li, the individual, all-around, gold-medalist male gymnast from Atlanta 1996 -- or I guess this Liu Xiang (sp?) Olympian2004
I wouldn't count Yao Ming out. I mean, he's only flag bearer until the Chinese team has reached the infield -- then, he'll bring the flag to the rostrum or somewhere else and doesn't have to stand with that thing in his hand throughout the whole rest of the ceremony. And remember Sydney? There, Cathy Freeman was among her teammates during the parade of nations as well, and that didn't prevent her from being the final torchbearer. baron-pierreIV
Why do I have a strange feeling that it's going to be Torino part deux... Don't know what u mean, but Marco Polo is, after all, best known for his old Cathay years..
wingspread
Don't know what u mean, but Marco Polo is, after all, best known for his old Cathay years.. Was referring to the cauldron lighting at Torino 2006. No one can really figure out how it'll work, and in my opinion none of the 'theories' here make sense. Maybe they'll just go for something blah like a fireworks extravaganza.
mr.x
Maybe he means the flame won't be really lit by the torch bearer, instead it'll be an automatic lighting like Torino's where the torch didn't even touch the cauldron? Hopefully that won't be the case.
wingspread
Hopefully that won't be the case. And don't get me wrong. I also hope that it won't end up like that.

Liam
It's a fairly big aesthetic clash - doesn't go well with the stadium design at all.
CrazyCarsti
Yes , and I remember that the OC said that the lightning of the cauldron will be more spectacular than Sydney How will that work ? A few ours left to see ...
Olympian2004
Actually, it has pretty much still the same shape like six weeks ago, when its installation on the roof was started: Onlly the curved "tail" of the cauldron looks longer now. So they probably only made the finishing touches and the painting in the "rubber hangar", and not major additional installations.
Ruling Czar
Whatever it is, trust that it will be something spectacular reinforcing the theme of a rolled scroll. That, btw, is an important feature of the opening ceremony theatrics.

Xu Wen-Ting
Many Chinese medias guess that ex-gymnast Li Ning would light the Olympic Cauldron... Because they find some clue on the list of Beijing torchbearers. On this list, Li Ning has no check in time and place.
Xu Wen-Ting
China famouse sports brand Li Ning is belongs to him... And maybe lighting the Olympic Cauldron need some stunts, such as suspension wire.

It was reported that the different sections would be linked by a huge rolled scroll on the field, like telling the different chapters of Chinese history..... so I think the scroll would eventually be transformed to become the flame. This is my first post on Gamesbids! Did anyone make any comments on the track that runs around the entire rim of the stadium, maybe the cauldron will move around on the track! I hope they do something SPECTACULAR!

Olympian2004
Did anyone make any comments on the track that runs around the entire rim of the stadium, maybe the cauldron will move around on the track! I hope they do something SPECTACULAR! Very good observation, I hadn't noticed the track around the rim so far. And on this picture, you can see that there's some sort of holder connected to that track: So, yes -- it's possible that the cauldron will be able to move around the roof. There's only one condition for that, though: That they remove the wires above the stadium. If they don't need them for the closing ceremony, that should be possible. And in terms of the mechanism how the cauldron will be lit tonight: We never had the final torch bearer soaring through the air to the cauldron. Why not tonight? Athens proved that it's possible to do such a stunt gracefully: Especially a former gymnast like Li Ning would be perfect for such a stunt which demands good coordination skills, I reckon. Just like Zainhasan, I'd like to stress that those are only my personal guesses. I have no connections to BOCOG or any other department connected to the organisation of the opening ceremony and thus have no insider information about its components. baron-pierreIV
Very good observation, I hadn't noticed the track around the rim so far. It might. But I fail to see any dramatic impetus in it. OK, so it's on a track. A full once-around would probably be 2 minutes Too long; too plodding. OK, so it's moving on a track -- so what? I think once the flame is lit, the fireworks will take over. A trip around the track will really not be dramatic.
