The Australian Olympic Committee has stated its goal for Australia to retain a top 5 position on the medal table. Based on results during the past 12 months, the AOC predict 20 Gold medals and 44 total; which would still be bettered by Germany.

Personally i think Australia should aim for 4th sport with 20 Gold medals and 50 total.

Gold chances in:

AQUATICS: M 50, 100, 400, 1500 free; 10m platform individual; W 50, 100, 4x100 free; 100, 200 breaststroke and butterfly; 100 back; 200, 400 IM; water polo, 10m platform individual & platform.

ARCHERY: M singles

ATHLETICS: M 5000m, pole vault.

BASKETBALL: Women's

CYCLING: M Road race, time trial, sprint, team pursuit; W Road race, Sprint, individual pursuit, points race.

Malaysia has never won a gold medal in the Olympics although we've won silvers and bronzes in badminton. We have a better chance this time around as medal hopes come from archery (male's recurve team is currently 4th in the world rankings with the Malaysian team were the losing finalist to Korea in the last world cup series), cycling (sprint and keirin.. we have world cup medalists going to Beijing), badminton (maybe there's a hope for gold this time), women's taekwondo, etc..

Remember that tiny 13yo diver Bryan Nickson Lomas who carried the Malaysia flag in Athens, and only missed the cut for the semifinals in the 10m platform? Well that world junior champion is back in Beijing! The chance are better in the synchro.

Good luck for Malaysia. While I will be cheering for New Zealand, my girlfriend is Malaysian so I will be supporting Malaysia as well!!!

According to La Tercera newspaper today, the Chilean hopes are:

*Tennis: Nicolás Massú and Fernando González (gold medals in Athens 2004, doubles; Massú, gold and González, bronze in singles). Although Massú is in the worst shape in his career, maybe González could give a surprise in singles. COCh officials believe that a medal in doubles is more possible than in singles, considering most of ATP Top Ten players will take part in the tournament (and Nadal wants to finally reach to the Top 1 place)

*Swimming: Kristel Köbrich, women's 10 km.

*Shooting: Jorge Atalah, skeet men

Also, I think that Matías del Solar could get a good place in men's laser (sailing) and maybe a bronze medal

You don't know how sad it is that for México, a country of nore than 103 millions plus some more millions in USA, the maximum we can get will be 6 and countries with way less people, for example Canada will have 7 times more than us or New Zealand 4 times more than us.

I do think we will have 4 medals.

María Espinoza: Gold in Tae Kwon Do. She is the World and Panamerican Champion.

Guillermo Pérez: Silver in Tae Kwon Do. World Runner-Up and he eliminated the current Olympic Runner-Up, Óscar Salazar, in the National Trials (unfortunately, the only sport in which México has a nation al trial).

Paola Espinoza: Bronze in the 10 meters Platform. World Champion in the Diving World Series, 3rd place in the Worl Cup.

Yahel Castillo: Bronze in the World Cup and in the 3 World Series events, he won one and score bronze in he other 2. He will attempt (and I'm sure he will) make the best dive in history of Olympic Diving. Though the Chinese look unstoppable for the 1-2. I think he will beat Despatie (Canada) and Dumais (USA).

Others that I think will finish between 4th and 8th in their sports, but have high high hopes of medals, are:

Eder Sánchez: 20 km Racewalk. 3 FInished 3rd in the Wold Cup and 4th in the World Championship, also won 2 World Challenges this year. He must beat Paquillo Fernández (Spain) if he wants the bronze.

Paola Espinoza/Tatiana Ortiz: 10 meters syncrho diving. 4th place in the World Cup and both finished 3rd and 6th in the World Cup individually, they also had a bronze in a World Series event this year.

Arturo Santos: Boxing 57 kg México is the #1 in Pro Boxing of the World, but the Amateur Mexican Federation is a ***...Arturo was world junior silver 4 years ago. FInishd 5th in the 2007 Worlds and 2nd in the Olympic Test event 2007 and Presidents Cup 2008. Plus he's Mexican, and the Mexican boxers are (said by he experts) the bravest.

Juan René Serrano: Individual Archery: Surprised the Archery wold by being the 2007 World Runner Up in the World Cup Final. 4 years ago, he ALMOST beat Marco Galiazzo (Italy), who won Athens 2004 gold.

Everardo Cristóbal: Canoeing C1 100 meters: 2006 World Champion, but 6th in 2007. Panamerican champion as well.

Tania Elías Calles: Laser Radial Sailing: Panamerican Champion, 2005 Europe Class and 2006 Laser Radial Wold Championship Medallist. Was #1 World Ranked in January but is coming back from an injury.

Vanessa Zambotti: +78 kg Judo: She has an enourmous hearth when competing...Panamerican Champion and medallist in some World Cups.

Surprises would b Rommel Pacheco or Laura Sánchez in diving or Ariel Mauricio Flores in Skeet.

That said, México will have between 2 and 6 medals.

Uhmmm... Brazilian men couldn't EVEN crack the top 3 spots on their HOME TURF in the World League -- what more in Peking? I think this Brazil team has seen its prime. Everything moves in cycles.

[/q

OK, I agree that Beijing represents the end of the cycle to this team. But they will close it with a gold, I'm pretty sure of that. This team gets better after unexpected defeats (world league 2002, also on our HOME TURF, pan am 2003, group phase in Athens to USA, first game from last year's World Cup, also to USA, and some ugly displays against Bulgaria in the past two or three World Leagues). The European teams begin the game knowing they will lose to Brazil. The American team could beat us, but they lost easily in the Athens semifinal and I think this will happen again this year.

The synchronized swimming team will also win a medal ;) I think we'll win more than 20 medals and 6 golds are possible. It's not our biggest delegation but it is one of the best (if not the best) in History.
