2008-2009 Isu Figure Skating Season

Recommended Posts

Why are nearly all the French/Canadian female figure skaters (mostly in pairs) named Isabelle? I can name at least 4 w/in the last decade: Isabelle Duschenay, Bresseur, Pecheur (now la femme de Oivier Schoenfelder), Schoenfelder's present partner, Isabelle Delobel.

Is it requirement that to be a French ice dancer, you most be first named Isabelle? God, if Mr. Olivier is carryin several affairs with any and all of the Isabelles, then if he slips up, one Isabelle cannot say he was thinking of the other.

Do't get me started on the Elzabeths...

Is any of this being broadcast on American TV?? I seriously want to watch some figure skating.

Skate America was broadcast live over the course of three or four days on NBC's Universal Sports channel. Check to see if you live in a market that has this channel.

Off to Goyang City, Korea for the qualified skaters for the ISU Grand Prix Final

At the finals in Goyang, KOR, the only US entries are in the Men's and Dance:

(So, possibly 1 US medal in the men's. I'm surprised Daisuke, the top Japanese male didn't make it...)

Patrick CHAN (CAN)

Takahiko KOZUKA (JPN)

Johnny WEIR (USA)

Brian JOUBERT (FRA)

Jeremy ABBOTT (USA)

Tomas VERNER (CZE)

In dance, there are:

Isabelle DELOBEL & Olivier SCHOENFELDER (FRA)

Oksana DOMNINA & Maxim SHABALIN (RUS)

Federica FAIELLA & Massimo SCALI (ITA)

Jana KHOKHLOVA & Sergei NOVITSKI (RUS)

Meryl DAVIS & Charlie WHITE (USA)

Tanith BELBIN & Benjamin AGOSTO (USA)

So, it'll at least be a FRA /USA/RUS tandem for the medals.

1st x in history, no US women in finals. The Chinese, Russians and the German pair will split the pairs event.

Some results from Goyang City, Korea, site of the this year's Grand Prix final:

MEN'S: Jeremy Abbott pulls an upset over the Japanese guy. Johnny Weir comes in 3rd. Joubert does not place.

ICE DANCE: French couple take gold but... Tanith Belbin and Agosto WITHDREW after the Original Dance portion -- and they were #1 at that point. Could only have been a bad injury.

PAIRS: 2 Chinese couples dethrone the German pair.

Next stop: Los Angeles for the World's in Feb or March?

This topic hasn't been updated for a while. The next international figure skating event is a VANCOUVER 2010 test event: the 2009 ISU Four Continents figure skating event from February 2 to 8. Here is the link to the official website: 2009 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Vancouver (2010 Winter Olympics Host City)

It will be interesting on how the event goes because these figure skaters have the potential to represent their countries at the Winter Olympics at the very venue the Olympic medals will be contested. However, it is funny that the ISU hasn't put up the entries to the event yet.

By the way, baron, the World Championships are usually held in March, like the junior counterpart.

How interesting that Davis-White beat Virtue-Moir. Obviously the 2 couples are closely matched but from the little I ahve seen of both, I think Virtue-Moir have such style. But they may not have a good program this year, and Davis-White (who were junior champions) may have really improved this year also. Of course, if Agosto and Schoenfelder are healthy for Los Angeles, then the medal hunt will be between Belbin-Agosto, Delobel-Schoenfelder, the Russian couple, and Virtue-Moir. One of those will be left out in Los Angeles.

Interesting. Well, it had to be an East Coast location as they haven't had it there in awhile.

the last east coast hosting was atlanta in 2004. missouri on the other hand just had it in 2006 in st. louis.

Isn't it funny how New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Wash, DC have ever hosted it? It's all the Tier B and C cities.

i wouldn't say Boston and LA are second tier cities. Washington D.C. hosted the bigger events which was Worlds in 2003. NYC, Chicago hosted way, way back. the closes hosting to SF was Berkeley but the Oakland Worlds of 1992 was a joint SF-Oakland hosting.
