Ripley
well, eventually, when it has the stage to itself, then THAT becomes the mark -- regardless of how ugly or nice it is. It could be a piece of drek saying "Sarajevo 2036," for example, and since it's the Official logo, it would then be imprinted in everyone's consciousness that that's what that particular year will be. Ilanaaq still hasn't grown on me. I just don't see how a kid's interpretation of a stone idol represents a Winter Games for me. And London 2012 will always be this disparate, jumbled-up shards of broken glass. Doesn't mean I'm going out of my way to look at it. THough I may go out of my way to totally avoid any BA plane that carries it if I were to have to use BA anytime soon in the future. A logo is either pleasing or NOT. It seems the Olympic logos of late are in the latter category. A logo in itself just has to be recognizeable, nothing more and nothing less. I don't avoid going to countries on the basis that their flag looks cr@p or avoid buying pertol from BP because I think their logo is crap. I think London is probably one city which didn't need to adorn its logo with twee little landmarks and national symbols...that isn't the ethos of the games, which are about encouraging young people everywhere to take up sport. If they had come up with a logo with little multi ethnic kiddies at play I think I would have puked. The logo as I see it is functional, recognizeable and distinctive in terms of past logos.... which have been made up of stars, boomerangs, olives, a potato print of a man and a figure made out of the left overs of stone henge....hardly earth shattering stuff! Kenadian
Well, pretty much any logo is or becomes recognizable--each time you see it associated with what it represents, you come to recognize it for what that is. That's what branding is really all about. Not the shape or in-fills of a logo, but its application and use. I certainly do think that LOCOG could have had a much more positive reaction with a design that wasn't difficult to grasp. Remember, this thing on first sight needed a LOT of explanation. Early comments...ZO-R? A map of the UK? Lisa Simpson and her pearl necklace? I wasn't always so keen on the bid logo, but it was attractive and got the point across...Olympics in London. And you have to remember the reaction to this was pretty intense and pretty rapid and mostly negative - and don't say it was "fed by the media" because people are more savvy than you give them credit for and much of that negativity came from young people. Just go to google images and see how many times it shows up in a blog as "SH!T" or "CRAP" or Lisa Simpson, or as acts of buggery, or as £400000 in the toilet, or google "ugly logo" or "terrible logo". Who do you think came up with that? Certainly not grannie or the "liberal media". It was da yoof of da world. But again, this is the logo they chose and it is ideas, not logos, that inspire people into action. While this thing may be quirky, jagged, and a bit disorganized, it is here to stay. It is just like Barack Obama. OK, yeah he has a great logo and solid branding but the excitement around him is the message and the man and not the graphics. Mr Tickle
That logo was recognised around the world within hours, a new brand with world wide coverage in hours of launch that is totally un-precidented. Yes it was negative publicity but the next day the world knew that logo and it said London 2012 whatever image people read into it. Any company launching a new product would kill for coverage like that, and it was free. Wether it was done on purpose to shock, get the recognition then soften it or wether they underestimated the response I would love to know. Personally Im excited by the brand and the fact they are re-writting the rule book. I am so looking forward to see how they bring it to life in the handover, and how it evolves after. I really do believe the effectiveness of the London 2012 brand will be the one that future games want to emulate. Its bold, its fiesty and it says more about the London of today to me than a picture of Tower Bridge.
its a bid of magic
Exactly, people who are trying to blame the media for turning the public against the London 2012 Logo are the one's being patronising in my view... The one mistake that they made was launching the logo in those dayglow colours. They should have launched it with the Union Jack or a picture infill. That pink, green and yellow highlighter-pen look is just bollox! Couldn't agree more. Come and have a pint in my corner lol Anyway the Logo is the only thing I have clashed swords with people in the Pro-London 2012 group. I wanted to like it, but just couldn't, especially in it's garish coloured non-static retina bleedin' capacity. Of course they wouldnt be happy in the same way Nike wouldnt be happy with the rip off T-shirts bearing their swoosh and the word SHITE, or that Beijing logo piss take of the man running being shot against a wall, people only mess with recognised logo's otherwise its pointless. Kenadian
It isn't THAT people are ripping the logo. It the reason WHY they are ripping them. Really, any Olympic logo is going to recognized no matter what it is. The Games are just that big and they get co-branded with big names like Coke, McDonalds, and Adiddas. The retakes of the Beijing logo are cutting political commentaries about China's human rights policies. Even Vancouver's retakes have been commentary about the city's drug, homeless, and first nations issues. But the retakes of the London logo is about the design and its cost. Although I suppose the "sh!t" logo may take on a new life as the games draw closer and draw more from the public purse. How's that for brand evolution! Kenadian
Well, what is the point of any of our discussions on Gamesbids? We don't select the hosts, we don't select the shortlists, we don't select the logos, we don't even select who gets to compete. So the only piont of the discussion is the discussion itself. Or, to better understand different points of views.

baron-pierreIV
London will pick a mascot design they feel is appropriate for them. So second-guessing them is really foolhardy.

NY20??
The point is, competition or no competition, the mascot will fit in with the rest of the brand, whether people like it or not.
Kenadian
OK, so the competition idea...would you open it to everyone or to just designers? The problem with competitions is they are way more subjective than a proper design process. Emblem being what it is, it is what LOCOG wanted. A competition doesn't guarantee that because the design is completed without input from the client. It is simply the artistic expression (or lack there of) of the designer. And a competition is also a lot of free work done for little or no recognition. The only competition should be a bid from designers with no free spec work. That will get the best result. Even if LOCOG did a competition for the logo, they would have likely picked something similar to what WO designed and nothing with a London icon or Union flag on it. That's not what they wanted.
