Guest
Cities Look To Future Olympic Bids The Vice Governor of St. Petersburg Russia told a daily newspaper that if Moscow is not selected host city for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, St. Petersburg could enter the race for the 2016 Summer Games. I definitely like this idea. I'm glad that a St. Petersburg official has brought it up. I also think that the 2016 Games should be hosted in Europe, not the 2012 Games, and St. Petersburg is a great candidate.
mr.x
i agree.....i think it'll do much much better than Moscow 2012, but i don't think it will win.
Guardian
Well, I'm kind of surprised, a bit off-topic-wise here, that Russia is not considering a bid for the Winter Olympics.
I Love Minneapolis
I would much rather have St. Petersburg over Moscow!
SOlympiadsW
I would prefer St. Petersburg since it has not hosted before... Also, what cities could Russia probably submit for a Winter Olympic Games???
Kenadian
Possibly in the Caucasus or Ural Mountains?
thatsnotmypuppy
Sochi/Krasnaya Polyana bid in 2002 (I think, or was it 1998?) but didnt complete its candidature. There was talk of maybe Yekaterinburg - since it is centrally located, has decent infrastructure and the Urals are nearby. There is some info on St Petersburg 2004 bid here - though it takes forever to open... St Petersburg 2004 And Sochi here... Intro to Sochi
Guardian
I don't know whether the Chechen insurgence is "responsible" for the relunctance of the Russian NOC to put forward a bid for a Winter Olympics or not. As for St. Petersburg, I think it makes a great candidate city to host an Olympic Games for Russia.
mattygs
Sochi bidded for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, not sure to what stage their bid got though. In any case, here are a few excerpts from the Sochi section, of the issue of the Olympic Message IOC magazine totally devoted to profiling the 1998 Candidates. Sochi Sochi's origins date back to 1909, when the first pension, the Kavkazskaya Riviera, was constructed there. Later, several villas were built for the wealthy elite. However, the hydrogen sulphide springs in Matsesta served no purpose, and the tsarist government did not lift a finger to organise the propper facilities. Today, Sochi is the USSR's biggest resport on the Black Sea coast, situated at approximately the same distance from both the equator and the North Pole. The mountains of the Caucasus -ridge gradually slope down to sea shore, barring the way to cold Northern winds. This gives an average monthly centigrade temp in the winter months as follows (on the sea coast) Dec 7.9, Jan 5.7, Feb 5.7. A motorway, equipped with the necessary road junctions, skirting the downtown area, is currently under construction and the city transport facilities are being converted for oxyfuel. At an altitude of 600-1,800m above sea level , on a vast terrace surrounded by lofty mountains, still within 43km's from Sochi, there ies the settlement of Krasnaya Polyana. The steep relief of the slopes combined with the unique temperate highland climate, ensures the most favourable conditions for winter sports. There is never a winter in Sochi without snow and sun. In view of the city's climatic conditions, it is planned to hold the Olympi Winter Games during the period from 7th to 22nd of February, 1998. Sochi has a well developed internal and external infrastructure. The airport ,located in the southern part of the city, is currently able to handle most all types of aircraft, and after reconstruction of the terminal, to be completed in 1992, it will be able to cater for up to 2,500 passengers per hour. It takes between 1 hour 40 minutes and 1 hour 50 minutes to get from Moscow to Sochi. Sochi has a direct rail connection with Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev and many other of the country's cities. Sochi's urban transport uses over 11,000 vehicles including 2,100 buses and 1,500 taxi cabs. It's daily transport capacity is over 900,000 passengers at the height of the holiday season. Sochi has a vast network of hotel infrastructure and is second only Moscow and Leningrad in terms of the number of hotels (12 hotels with capacity of 12,000). In accordance with the requirements of the IOC, the Olympic Winter Games bidding programme envisages the construction of two Olympic villages. The main one with a capacity of 2,000 places - in close prox to the main skating, speed skating short track, bob and luge venues. There are plans to construct a second Olympic village in the region of Krasnaya Polyana, it will include a hotel with 700 beds and a group of cottages with 500 beds for skiing, slalom, ski jumping, biathlon, free style etc. Looking at some of the illustrations in this book, the captions mention .... - Speed skating events will be held in this covered 'bob track' stadium which can seat 6,000 spectators - This additional ice palace can seat 12,000 spectators - Another ice palace with a seating capacity of 12,000 - In this Ice Stadium with a seating capacity of 5,000, there will also be a training rink with seating for 2,000 people As a side note, just looking through this book, Oestersund looks like such a nice place. :grinning: But neone, that's much of what was said about Sochi back in '91ish
