stryker
I notice that Rio's plans call for using seperate stadiums for the track and field competition (Joao Havelange) and the ceremonies (Maracana). This goes against the norm. Any chance this could hurt Rio's bid in the eyes of the IOC?

Worse comes to worse Rio could have a second cauldron at Joao Havelange if it makes a better background for athletics competition.

Not sure having the flame there will matter. There isn't a flame at the judo competiton...equestrian dressage, rowing. If Rio has to go the length of having two flames to have "that Olympic feeling" they have some serious spirit, branding and support issues. However, i have no doubt there will only be one flame. That's not what I was talking about. The trouble is was the IAAF, which might feel frustrated for not having the flame in its stadium as it is used to. And I am sure TV would love to have shots of the flame in the background of the Track and Fields events. Besides, having two flames is not unheard of: Moscow had flames at each of its soccer venues, Busan had a flame as sailing venue for Seoul and it's very common during the winter games. Soaring
...and why won't track and field be in Maracana? Is soccer (football) going to be there? I think it's stupid if the stadium isn't used for something.

Maracana is and will remain a football stadium without a track. Jao Avelange stadium has been purposely built for athletics.

I think it's stupid if the stadium isn't used for something. as far as i know, Maracana cannot fit an athletics track without works to its seating. Although it is round, it has quite a small field compared to other oval stadiums of the world. The IAAF can go stick it as far as i am concerned. Like i said, its not often (as you pointed out) that the Olympic flame features at other venues, so why should the IAAF kick up **** about not having it at their sports venue. The flame should be at the venue in which the opening or closing ceremonies take place. period.

FYI
They're using 2 stadiums? And they still short-listed? Why won't this effect their bid? It was made a big stink about when Chicago was proposing 2 stadiums early on in their bid, & Houston's 2-stadium 2012 plan didn't go far either. My understanding was that both Houston and Chicago were proposing to use 2 stadia for the ceremonies themselves (with the athletes parading from one stadium to the other). Rio is just proposing to use a different stadium for ceremonies and track and fields.

Soaring
I don't think it will be an issue, just as long as the stadium is used for a good portion of the Games. I kind of like the idea of having "special torches" carry flames to other venues (with large events) after the main cauldron is lit. Each "mini cauldron" can be extinguished after the events are concluded. So yeah, I think it wouldn't be too much of a negative - if at all. Marcana still seems to have a some charm, but it sure does need a face lift.
Sir Rols
Separate ceremonies and athetics stadiums are also what Glasgow are doing for the Commonwealth Games. I've got no problem with it. If it's the best use of existing facilities, so be it.

Aronious
Why is there a problem in using two stadiums. If athletics doesn't need a +72,000 seat venue and there is a better, more suited venue on offer, why not use it. It makes transport slightly harder in one sense but also takes a lot of the heat of the main stadium.

Kenadian
If the IOC truly wants to live by the sustainable principles they claim to be all in favour of, then this is a perfectly viable solution. The Olympic flame is merely a symbol. And given the huge noise made in the Vancouver section about a flame in BC Place and the excessively large flame used in Torino, maybe it is time for the IOC to reconsider the use of the flame itself. As a symbol, it is powerful. But bigger, brighter, and simply more flames can be a symbol of excess and reckless regard for the environment. Environmental stewardship is something the IOC claims is a core value of the Olympic Movement.
