baron-pierreIV
Per GB, Brazilian Olympic committee president Carlos Arthur Nuzman has uttered the magic words: "The time is right for South America." Now where have we heard that before? Rio has just taken the first poison pill. Next...

thorbr
What was wrong with that? What am I missing? There's nothing... people here are trying despereatelly to booooo Rio's chances... God! Nuzman was cheerfull because it was the first time a Brazilian city is a candidate city! Of course he'll try to point out what he thinks are our strong points.... I've been reading some posts here and people are really "technical", and often BOOOOOOOOO others like James..... but then... all of a sudden, I come here and read a post like this.... it's ridiculous! Let's focus on what really matters! Isn't that what u often say?
baron-pierreIV
What was wrong with that? What am I missing? It's one of those phrases that carry more negative energy than good luck. Look at Abuja's 2014 CWG bid. They pretty much tried to ride on a similar theme. And this will be the first of many by probably ALL the candidates. That's all I'm saying. Sir Rols
It's a fair enough pitch to make, it is their strongest argument, really, as long as they don't overdo it, like Abuja. They need to concentrate more on how it's NOT their only argument, and don't try to play the "it's time" card as some sense of entitlement (again, a la Abuja). Instead of pushing a message like "Our region's never had the games before, it's our turn now!" they need to more take a spin like "We feel we have what it takes to finally bring the games to our region, and we'd like to humbly ask that you give us that honour and let us and help us do so!" olympian
I think the last thing the IOC wants is a city dictating to them how to vote. Paris lost with such attitude in 2012.

Well, the entitlement angle did work for China & Beijing. "It's time for the Games to be hosted by the most populous nation on Earth." "How can a nation of 1.3 BILLION people be 'denied' the honor". Paris didn't have any attitude for 2012. The problem was that they kept it really low-key for that race & didn't lobby as hard as London did, & yet somehow people think that translates into "attitude". Sir Rols
Well, the entitlement angle did work for China & Beijing. "It's time for the Games to be hosted by the most populous nation on Earth." "How can a nation of 1.3 BILLION people be 'denied' the honor". Of course that's always the overlaying message. For China before, and Rio now, it's their best and strongest and most effective argument, but DIPLOMACY, please! Never so explicitly! This is a game of begging, not demanding. There's ways to get the same message across, without pissing off the people you're trying to get a big favour from. I'll think you'll find that one of the only times China ever played that card so blatantly, was in 1993 a few days before the 2000 vote, when they said that they might consider boycotting Atlanta if they didn't get what was rightfully due to them (or words to that effect). And look where it got them. Olympic bidding Rule 1: Never, ever, tell an IOC member how they HAVE TO vote.
FYI
I'm well aware of that. It's no big secret that the IOC doesn't like arrogance. That kind of behavior didn't work for Paris '92, Athens '96, Rome '04 & Sion '06. And although it didn't work for Beijing for 2000, they still came only 2 votes from winning. A much, much closer vote than any of the other cities that I previously listed. The rest of those lost by large margins. And Beijing also used that argument for 2008, perhaps more subtle than 2000, but nonetheless the card was played. And it's seems apparent that kind of tactic has only worked for China. Well, they also bolstered such claims in the fields of play -- by dominating a lot of sports and bringing home the medals. So they put their money where their mouth was, and certainly, the IOC could NOT ignore them.

LOL, jeez you like splitting hairs! I never, ever said they can't play the "it's time"card. They have to! But as you've also said you agree, NEVER so blatantly. And never as the only card. Anyway, it's still early in the race now, and I don't think Nuzman's sentence really crossed the line yet. But that, and Lula's earlier statement about Olympic "prejudice" are showing worryiing tendencies on their part. They need to watch their step. This is where bidding experience starts to become important.
DannyelBrazil
I don't see any problem about Nuzman speech. He's right, never South America (Brazil) presented a candidate with some chances to win this race. So, If Rio loses this time, I will agree with Baron: next South America chance would be in 2024, 2028... So, it's the right time to South America... And I think this topic is too long... We don't need to discuss this.

That's exactly what James says..... you guys want everybody else who cheers for candidates other than the "mainstream" one out of here! DannyBrazil wasn't saying anything that was BOOSTING Rio's chances...... He just wanted to point out that, one more time, Baron's comment was totally out of pourpose! It's ridiculous to think that what Nuzman said RIGHT AFTER WE KNEW THAT WE WERE A CANDIDATE CITY, and was really HAPPY and CHEERFULL, is going to hurt our chances and means that we are doing the same as Korea or any other bid in the past.... it was just a moment... this interview was right after the meeting in Athens.... it's NOT a big deal... that's what Danny meant.......... but of course that, ONE MORE TIME, you guys here try to say "BRAZILIANS" are doing this or that, or KOREANS, or Russians, or Chinese... or anyone that has not the knowledge u guys there in Europe and USA think you have.... olympian
Because it will. The last thing the IOC wants is for a single city to shove it on their faces and that's what Nuzman did by saying its time for South America. Its clearly a case of shoving it up on he faces of the press in order to apply some pressure to the IOC.

Its clearly a case of shoving it up on he faces of the press in order to apply some pressure to the IOC. Come'on, it's obvious that "now it's time for South-America" will be one of Rio main themes (and why not?). Nuzman was stating the obvious... Never did he say that it was Rio's only selling point: Rio seems to have a technically acceptable plan (though clearly weaker than the other 3 candidate cities), has experience in hosting sports events and full governmental backing at all level. This will count. But let's not be hypocrite shall we? First Games in South-America will be a selling point for Rio and played smartly (not "You owe us the Games" but rather "Rio is working hard to give the IOC, should it wishes so, the opportunity to stage the Games in South America for the first time, so further spreading the Olympic Movement") then I have no problem with it.
