Future African Bid:

I think in the near future countries in Africa would have much bidders for Commonwealth Games than the developed countries, as the developed countries are now saying CWGs are no longer viable for their nations.

I think Nigeria is a possible bidder or Ghana in 15-25 years time.

South Africa, Tanzania , Zambia and Cameroon I believe should be included in the list of possible place to host the Commonwealth Games in Africa. Tanzania has just completed a state of the art main Stadium in their capital , Zambia is host of the 2011 All-African Games and would certainly have many new facilities . Cameroon is on a building path for Venues in their Capital as well. South Africa of course goes without question that they could host but would they be actually interested ? South Africa use to have Formula one Races , is hosting the 2010 WC and has bid on the Olympics doing very well in the bid process . There has not been a Commonwealth Games Bid from South Africa even since Apartheid was lifted in 1993. South Africa hosted the 1999 All-African Games but has not rolled that legacy into a commonwealth games or Olympic bid in Johanasburg. Durban has made noises but considering the task at hand with completing a new stadium for WC 2010 they may have phase for thought on the CWG's. I would also look to Kenya as well . thou it takes more then a main stadium and other venues the last two western nation candidates did not even have what Dar es Salaam has in regards to a Main Athletes Stadium .

If building sports infrastructure in every nook and cranky of Scotland , Canada , Wales , England , Australia and New Zealand is Indeed what the Federation is After while basically Ignoring these african countries great facilities then Africa should really think about why they take part in the games

period and it if would not be in their best interests to put money directly into their Olympic Teams.

Another indication that Canada's time with hosting may be through is the article just published in the Hamilton Spectator today. Basically the Commonwealth Games people are grasping for shaws in Canada and they are not getting a rosey reception IE no Federal reps at the meetign the other day. LOL

CGC looks to Hamilton

2015 Commonwealth bid would conflict with Pan-Am Games bid

June 03, 2008

John Kernaghan

The Hamilton Spectator

(Jun 3, 2008)

The same organization that rejected Hamilton as a Commonwealth Games host three years ago has thrown out the welcome mat again.

But the timing of the offer isn't being embraced by promoters of a bid to bring the 2015 Pan-American Games to Hamilton and other Golden Horseshoe cities.

The head of Commonwealth Games Canada, fresh off a review of the aborted Halifax bid for the 2014 showcase, says the city that spawned the then-Empire Games in 1930 would be a good candidate again.

"Absolutely we'd love interest from Hamilton," said CGC president Dr. Andrew Pipe. "Hamilton is the home of the Games."

However, the CGC's aims may conflict with the Pan-Am plans of the Canadian Olympic Committee and municipalities from Niagara to Durham Region east of Toronto.

"It seems to muddy the waters," COC CEO Chris Rudge said from London yesterday.

That's because the head of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Mike Fennell, dropped a 2018 Games as a possible bid aim for Canada when he met with CGC officials late last week.

If so, that would bring a Commonwealth Games bid into conflict with the Pan-Ams and two possible World University Games initiatives hoping for federal government approval.

Sport Canada, the government's funding agent, unveiled an international hosting policy recently that called for two major Games in the 2008 to 2018 time frame.

One would be the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler. The Pan-Ams and World University Games, both scheduled for 2015, are candidates for the other opening.

A spokesperson for CGC said Fennell wasn't reflecting the Canadian body's position when he mentioned 2018. But John Bower said the CGC board considered bid possibilities during weekend meetings though it set no policy.

He said board members wrestled with the logistics of bidding around the centenary Games, 2030.

The first Games were organized by Hamilton Spectator editor Bobby Robinson in 1930.

"If we don't go for 2018, but go for 2022, that means it would be unlikely we'd get those 2030 Games," explained Bower.

He said CGC could ask Sport Canada to set aside 2030 as a special milestone in its hosting policy.

Gene Sutton, a COC board member and prime mover behind the Pan-Am Games initiative, said the Pan-Am timing and menu of sports is a better fit for Hamilton and other municipalities in southern Ontario.

"Commonwealth has things like netball and lawn bowling, while Pan-Ams has basketball, rowing and canoe and kayak as well as traditional sports. That has broader appeal in his market."

Sutton noted the Commonwealth Games demand a small footprint, so the events could not be stretched across the Golden Horseshoe.

"The Pan-Ams works best because there is a shared risk and shared reward by several cities."

A provincial government Pan-American Games secretariat is examining the economic feasibility of the 2015 showcase and is expected to report to cabinet by month's end.

At the same time, Rudge and heads of various national sports federations have been pressing the case for federal support.

Canada, through the COC, must formally declare a bid early next year. Three South American cities have also expressed interest in the 2015 event.

The 2011 Games will be in Guadalajara, Mexico.

like I have Said the Canadian CWG people are loosely associated with the Canadian Olympic People and the organization that get the federal Dollars are the COC . The Canadain Olympic People focus on the Olympics and Pan Am games . It is odd for the Commonwealth Games people of Canada to go court Hamilton who were humiliated losing to Halifax the little fishing village with nothing for venues.

Call me stupid, but isn't it ironic that Africa has more participating nations to the Commonwealth Games than any other continent or such world area? Even more so, this continent has NOT hosted one Commonwealth Games yet. If you were to go to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) official website and look it up, Africa has 18 participating nations for these Games. And, this is NOT including Zimbabwe and other African nations that are asking to join in that are not really "Commonwealth countries", like Rwanda.

Not to go off-topic, but here is the DESCENDING order of number of participating nations/teams to the Commonwealth Games by continent or world major area, besides Africa:

- the CARIBBEAN with 15 teams;

- the OCEANIA region with 14 teams, with more to come;

- EUROPE with with 10 teams, with possibly more to come, too;

- ASIA with just 8 teams, with more to come as well. Too bad that Hong Kong isn't one of them anymore; and,

- the AMERICAS with just SIX teams!

In another way, in order of the Commonwealth Games HOSTINGS since 1930, by the same criterion:

- OCEANIA -> Seven (7) times;

- EUROPE -> Six (6) times, including the upcoming 2014 edition in Glasgow, Scotland;

- the AMERICAS (with just Canada) -> Four (4) times;

- ASIA -> Two (2) times, including the upcoming 2010 edition at Delhi, India; and,

- the CARIBBEAN -> ONCE, which was Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966.

What should we call that? BIASED or just a mere incapable to host?

I think the best reason lies within the CGF.

Much more of the latter than the former. Hopefully in the coming years technical aspects will cease to be a good reason not to give an African nation the games. But the technical verdict of the CWGC suggests that time is a little while off yet.

and really guardian what type of "teams" do the majority of the America's Nations have

St Helene which is far closer to Africa then the America 6 athletes

Guyana about 6 athletes with a diver last time being very white and from fort mac money alberta?

The Falkland Islands about 6

Belize maybe 10 athletes tops.

Bermuda is in much the same way probably more that qualify for Equestrian events for the Olympics then that qualify for sports in both the Olympics and the commonwealth games like diving.

I counted out one day the delegations for the Americas and Caribbean for Melbourne 2006 and you could get them all on one 747 400 series plane. With the Caribbean and the Americas except Canada a 777 would do the entire roosters of all those nations. most dont even send doubt digit delegations. Gosh Abuja 2014 had over 100 people to Columbo for the vote LOL.

Yemen and Sudan will definitely become members in 2009. Cambodia, Madagascar, Rwanda and Algeria have applied and its thought that Rwanda will definitely become a member.

In truth, if Zimbabwe had been run by a responsible leader of the last 20 years, Harare would have probably hosted by now if it had shown interesting. In 1985 Zimbabwe was the most developed country in Africa and was looking good for awhile. Harare was also thought of as the most likely Olympic host back in the 80's and very early 90's.

I'm amazed that "small" countries have fronted up to host, namely Jamaica (once), Wales (once)and New Zealand (with 3 hostings), yet Africa still can't front up...( And the one African nation that can, just can't be bothered).

Yes, such a pity isn't it ? Cambodia, Madagascar, Rwanda and Algeria are all former French colonies with the exepction of Rwanda which was Belgian. Cambodia does have many former British colonies neighbours like Singapore, Malaysia, Burma, Bangladesh & India...

Comparing Scotland, a nation with the best education and welfare system in the world; a nation where all ethnic groups are welcomed, a nation which has innovated and helped build the modern world with it's academia to Abuja is laughable.

What next mate, are you going to compare Guantanamo bay to Disney land?

Nigeria is a third worls country where women are suppressed, where a tribal social culture is still prevalent, where people live in sub standard housing (mud huts), where gays are killed, where there is a lack of food and water etc etc etc.

For years you have tried to Mock Britain and in particular Scotland. You just seem silly because you are a grown man and are lying to try and prove a point which does not exist.

P.S. Does everybody know that Jim Jones keeps a folder with pictures of Glasgow he does not like (he mentioned it on another thread). That is how bitter he is - a grown man collecting 'bad' pictures to use to try and mock cities on online forums. Weirdo.

brothers and sisters, the toll is rising

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Fresh fighting broke out here Tuesday after Nigerian forces shelled a mosque and the home of the leader of an Islamic fundamentalist sect on the third day of fierce clashes that have killed more than 250 people, witnesses said.

Sporadic mortar fire and gunshots rang out as soldiers shelled the mosque and home of Mohammed Yusuf in Maiduguri, sending plumes of smoke rising over the capital of northern Borno State.

An AFP correspondent, meanwhile, witnessed soldiers shooting three young men dead at point blank range close to the city's police headquarters.

The men who had just been arrested were seen kneeling and pleading for their lives before being shot.

"The deafening sounds are from mortar shelling of the house of the leader of the Taliban by the military," a source at the police headquarters told AFP.

"The military is also shelling the mosque run by the group, which hundreds of its followers have been guarding," he said.

The shelling came as Nigerian security forces sought to end an uprising by the self-styled Nigerian "Taliban" which has said it wants to lead an armed insurrection and rid society of "immorality" and "infidelity."

The group has targeted police in four northern states since early Sunday.

Later Tuesday, the shelling stopped, but fresh fighting broke out, resident Mohammed Awwal Mujahid, told AFP, adding that he could see flashes of light and hear heavy machine gunfire.

President Umaru Yar'Adua, speaking in the capital Abuja, said the situation in northern Nigeria was "under control" and indicated that a final assault was underway.

"We have the situation under control now and I believe that by the end of the day, everything would have been taken care of," Yar'Adua told reporters as he boarded a flight at Abuja airport for Brazil.

The military operation under way would "contain them once and for all," he added.

"They will be dealt with squarely and forthwith."

During the assault security forces overran the home of the elusive sect leader Yusuf and a nearby mosque used by his followers.

"We are not sure whether he has been killed in the shelling or has managed to escape," a police officer said of Yusuf.

The fighting began Sunday in nearby Bauchi State before spilling over into Yobe, and authorities said 55 were killed in both states.

However, most of the casualties appear to have been in Maiduguri, the northeastern city known as the birthplace and stronghold of the Islamic fundamentalist group.

Clashes between security forces and radical Islamists there on Monday alone killed at least 206 people, a police source told AFP.

An AFP reporter counted 30 bodies strewn across the grounds of the police headquarters on Tuesday before 10 more were brought in. Dozens of other bodies which littered the grounds of the police headquarters earlier had been taken away.

Yar'Adua had earlier placed security forces on maximum alert late Monday as the death toll mounted.

The streets of Maiduguri which is under a dusk-to-dawn curfew were deserted Tuesday except for police patrols.

Dozens of residents fled to the protection of the police headquarters. Around 200 militant Islamists had kept an overnight vigil outside the mosque and Yusuf's home.

They were described as "fearless" and "fanatics" by Isa Azare, police spokesman for Maiduguri.

The militants went on the rampage torching churches and government buildings.

The unrest is the deadliest sectarian violence in Nigeria since November last year when human rights groups say up to 700 were killed in the central city of Jos in direct clashes between Muslims and Christians.

The fighting in the north erupted Sunday in Bauchi state, when police hit back at militants after a foiled attack at a police station, and spread rapidly to neighbouring states.

The Nigerian extremists emerged in 2002 in Maiduguri before setting up in 2004 a camp -- dubbed "Afghanistan" -- in Kanamma village in Yobe, on the border with Niger, from where it attacked three police outposts and killed police officers.

Troops then moved in to raze the camp during battles in which scores were killed. Many were arrested while others went underground. Remnants re-emerged in Maiduguri.

Northern Nigeria is mainly Muslim, although large Christian minorities have settled in the main towns, raising tensions between the two groups.

Since the return of a civilian regime to Nigeria's central government in 1999, 12 northern states have adopted Islamic Sharia law. The latest attacks, which independent security analysts say were co-ordinated, affected a third of these states.

Well Considering I have been to Nigeria and you probably haven't I think we know who knows more about the Subject then the other. There is hardly a family in Nigeria living in a Mud Hut. However people have been stabbed to death for wearing rangers colors on their very doorstep in Glasgow Scotland. Yeah I am glad women are so supressed in Nigeria that ONe would actually be the CEO of the Major Bank that Paid for my Trip as a Supporter . Then there is that suppressed female sole from Nigeria who got both the Paris club and London club Foreign Debts cleared off the book in May of 2006 having Nigeria with one of the lowest Debt to GDP ratios in the entire commonwealth that the UK could only dream of having .

Gee maybe Muslim Law works ROTFLMAO.

Jim, can I ask a serious question. Are you dyslexic or suffering from literacy problems? It's just your posts have a total lack of grammar in them.

So you have been to Nigeria and now you are an expert on the country. I have been to many places yet do not claim to be an expert on the subject. Jim, maybe you are 'special'. lol.

Right now in Nigeria people are being slaughtered in civil war. So for you to say that Islamic law works shows you posess little knowledge.Maybe you should move from Nova Scotia to a mud hut in Nigeria Jim since you love it so much. lol. I'm sure Canadians would be happy to see you leave. You would need to convert to Islam however Jim so you would probably have no time to post on gamesbid forums since you would be praying 5 times a day.

ROFL!!!

You keep banging on about Rangers etc. Every city has violence. Nigeria however has a civil war with immense swathes of poverty. To try and compare Scotland or the UK to a third world country is just stupid. Jim, when you say things like that, that is when everybody on the gamesbid forums laughs at you.

I won't embarrass you mate by saying publicly something I was told about you by another poster. It did make me burst out laughing however.

50% of Nigerians live below the poverty line. Please reference these facts from the BBC and backed by the UN mate:

Nigeria 'needs poverty billions'

More than 50% of Nigerians live below the poverty line

Nigeria needs between $5bn to $7bn per annum to achieve the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015, a top Nigerian official has said.

But Amina Ibrahim, poverty adviser to the ex-president, says she thinks her country has the potential to meet the goals intended to eradicate poverty.

This month marks the half-way stage from the time the UN set the goals.

With its oil wealth, Nigeria is felt by analysts to have the best chance in West Africa of meeting the UN targets.

By 2015, it is hoped the percentage of people living on less than $1 a day should be cut by 50%.

At present, more than 50% of the population in Nigeria live below the poverty line.

'Drop in the ocean'

The BBC's World Affairs correspondent Mark Doyle says Ms Ibrahim has had one of the most challenging jobs in the world as the top anti-poverty adviser to Olusegun Obasanjo, who stepped down as president in May.

She had to overcome the corruption and historical cynicism of a Nigerian ruling class, which has rarely shown real commitment to ending poverty, he says.

Three years ago, she was given access to $1bn that Nigeria obtained through a debt relief deal to set about achieving the MDGs.

She has overseen a vast programme of health, education and social projects to reach this conclusion.

But she says even the $1bn she was working with was a "drop in the ocean".

"We've got to scale up immensely with the programmes and the projects we've got," she told the BBC.

"And we've got to find a better way to collaborate as a federal government with the other states. But yes we have the potential to meet that goal."

Nigeria's local and state governments have a lot of catching up to do with the federal administration to bring in transparency and good accounting, she says.

P.S. Some men collect car magazines. But Jim Jones collects 'bad' photos of Glasgow so that he can try and malign the city on forums. How sad is that. Everyone, Jim Jones is a grown man and actively collects photos of cities he does not like so that he can come online and bash them. He admitted this. No you Malign Nigeria in a form entitled Future African Bid Thinking that people are ignorant to UKs big shortcomings LOL. Man oh man it is very apparent lets make all the excuses and dispensations to have Glasgow for federation board member Louise Martin to host while Nigeria Can't being the Only African bidder to go to a bid election since 1966 ? This is why the Commonwealth Games Spins its wheels in the sand of Boring places and backwaters in the big four that get rejected for hosting the Olympics . Get it thru your head South Africa is not bidding on the CWGs and never will . But hey the Future Africa bid may never come at all simply because the Commonwealth Games has a dim future.

They seem to grasp that it is a much bigger investment then the revenues and hence maybe the Africans are smarter for bidding on things with some meaning like the WC 2006 and WC 2010.

Nigeria a population that is the largest in Africa and larger by a factor of over 2 of all the European commonwealth Nations COMBINED. The Same goes for the Regions of Oceania , The Americas and Caribbean in regards to Commonwealth Nations.

Jim, if you hate the commonwealth games so much and think they are crap why have you been rattling on about Abuja losing the 2014 bid for 2 years? lol.

You obviously do like the commonwealth games and are upset! Wipe your tears away mate! lol

South Africa getting the world cup is nothing to do with Nigeria. Comparing the two is stupid. South Africa has great sports venues for starters. Nigeria does not.

And you say that Africa is smarter for bidding on things with bigger meaning. Lets hope they use some of 'brains' to do something about the overwhelming poverty, lack of infrastructure, lack of food, female supression etc.

Oh, and those 'bigger things' which Africa is bidding on are all happening in the UK:

1. London 2012 Olympic games

2. Glasgow 2014 commonwealth games

3. England 2015 rugby world cup

4. England bid for 2018 world cup

To name just a few....

Yeah look yourself in the mirror and THink . WAs my bid so great that I had to award 50 scholarships to 50 students from the developing commonwealth nations LOL. A FACT printed in Glasgow News papers.

So this lack of infrastructure in Abuja Just wondering How much have they built since glasgow Abandoned three cross highway footbridges and a major ring road . I have the pictures on that as well which are not hard to find as one of your country men has a great website on the foillies of Scottish infrastructure waiting decades to be complete. While Glasgow didn't complete these little tasks a City rose out of Central Nigeria to be the new Capital with up to date planning on the way in the age of the Automobile. Funny how those backward people somehow Staged a games of 6000 Athletes While Scotland has never done that . Funny how they indeed have more hotel capacity as well built since 1991 and probably around the 20th anniversery some of Glasgows Bridges to nowhere being started.
