Opening Ceremony Details

Recommended Posts

I got CCTV4 on my cable service, which means is very probable that i can watch the entire opening ceremony Live without commercial cuts and comments (well i guess so, since the channel has transmitted all the imporant events surrounding Beijing 2008 such as the unveling of the torch and the countdowns, not mentioning the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony which was transmitted entirely. I mean, if they cover a less important event like that, why not the Olympics xD)

Anyway there are other two national channels here which will transmit the olympics, altough i would prefer watching the great sho of August 8 on CCTV4

Aren't they going live? why to shorten the whole thing?

Nope, both in Athens and Sydney, they did it taped, to show in Prime Time 8 pm east 7 pm central. So they edit what they want, for commercials. Believe me I was so disappointed not to see my country.

Seamus, because the OC is not all that important to many people. And who will be watching at 2:00 am in the morning? Economically, it doesn't make sense for the network.

Chapin, yeah, as for the smaller nations, unfortunately, because how many people really care for San Marino or Tuvalu or the Maldives, the smaller nations get cut out because the advertisers have to have their time. That's a fact of life.

Now, if the Guatemalans marched out in something snazzy or wacky -- like you know they always show the Mongolians because their guys walk in w/ just a thong. So maybe if the Guatemalans march in with some gimmick -- either bare-breated women or have those Groucho Marx masks  , certainly NBC will probably not cut them out!!

I mean, here in the east coast, it would be 8am. I'm sure providing a live feed with no commentary would be a good filler of time for channels like Universal HD, which air alot of repeats. Knowing NBC, they wouldn't do it.

The only time they've aired an OCs live on the East Coast non-primetime -- was the Lake Placid 1980 Opening. That was around 2:00 or 3:00 pm. I remember because I got special permission to watch it live in the Conference Room of the ad agency I was working for in NYC at that time. And of course that's because it was a major New York (up)State event.

Otherwise, only another US-based Olympics merits a live telecast of the Ceremonies.

That's just a fact of life.

SORRY GUYS~ CCTV 4/CCTV 9 are not allowed to broadcast the OC becasue of CCTV broadcast rights only limited within China's Mainland.

So you got to tune in the offical broadcastors of your nations to watch/ BBC UK~

WTF???? you got to be kidding me. CCTV 4 transmitted a lot of events related to the Beijing 2008 olympics, why are they not going to show up the OC??? I don't get it O__O

No~because they got to pay for your nations to air any of the olympics games coverage potentially doesn't fit in IOC broadcasting regulations.

That's a painstaking job and expesive move.

Haven't you seen that CCTV's channels that air internationally have begun to run notices saying that they will not air Olympic events outside of China because of IOC regulations. For example, NBC bought the rights to broadcast the Games (that doesn’t include more trivial things like the unveiling of the torch) in the US, so therefore only NBC can broadcast the Games in the US, no one else. The BBC bought the rights to broadcast the Games in the UK, so therefore only the BBC has the right to broadcast the Games in the UK. Etc...

ANOTHER POTENTIAL LEAKED NEWS.

SARAH BRIGHTMAN

248eef68b7.jpg

The singer for the theme tune of Barcelona 1992 arrived from London to Beijing yesterday. Usually she would pick a better hotel to stay in the city but this time she particularly moved just next the Bird's Nest Stadium

And her assistances already went into the rehearsal place helping to test the sound system. And also it's been told she is currently practising the Chinese pronunciations.

And world famous Chinese pianoist Lang Lang also joining the same hotel with Jackie Chan and other A-list stars in a few days

So one question is remain... it's going to be her to sing for the Beijing's theme tune?

Not again.... O_____O. Is not that she's a bad singer but, didn't she already sang on Atlanta 1996? Why again?

Because Sarah Brightman is one of the 3 Olympic muses. Ceremonies alternate between her, Celine Dion and Gloria Estefan.

I would be surprised if Ma Ma-Yo (the famed cellist) will not perform in these Beijing Ceremonies.

I hate NBC's coverage of the Olympics. The stuff they show on the cable networks are all fine, but it seems like on NBC they show 10 seconds of coverage, cut to a commercial, and come back with some sappy story about some athlete overcoming some sort of overblown adversity. It give me the urge to beat Bob Costas upside the head with a four-iron.

During the Opening Ceremony, no doubt NBC will cut decent portions of the Parade of Nations out. After all, nobody in America cares about the Maldives, right? (sarcasm) They did it in Athens, and they'll do it again in Beijing. The only small nations NBC seems to show during the Parade are the ones stuck around America in the order, or the small ones Bob Costas can mis-pronounce and make fun of, like Kiribati or Sao Tome & Principe.

I don't think any of the NBC cable subsidiaries (USA, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo, etc..) in America will show the Opening Ceremony live at 8:00 am (which is when it'll air on the East Coast). HOWEVER, thank God for me I live close enough to Canada to pick up the CBC on my local cable. Not only will they show the Opening Ceremony uncut (or at the very least with far less commercials than NBC), but they'll show it LIVE at 8:00 am.

As for the opening ceremony itself, any thoughts on who'll light the cauldron/be the last torch runner? Will it be some Chinese athlete from days-gone-by that nobody here knows about? Will it be Yao Ming, the world's most recognizable and most popular Chinese athlete? or will it be the re-animated corpse of Mao??

I doubt it'll be Yao Ming. He's big and all, but the Chinese really care about medals, especially Gold. He hasn't won any.

If they've managed to talk him into missing a day of training (the reason he kept saying t he couldn't do it), then my money is on Liu Xiang. Huge star in China, current Olympic Champion, lots of attention from the media during the Games no doubt, and his situation reminds me of Cathy Freeman’s.
