2008 Emergency Host Competition!

Those wacky Tibetans and Uighurs have hired Godzilla to flatten Beijing! With less than 120 days to go the city is devastated!!

godzillahk2.jpg

The Birds Nest is only good for soup now! The Olympic Green is now burnt to a crisp! Tiananmen is Tianangone! The Forbidden City is so Forbidden IT DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE!!!

The sponsors are screaming - "we've paid you corrupt IOC bastards for Games this year! Give us Games!"

The athletes are bellowing - "For f*ck sake! We've worked too hard for this!"

The people of Beijing are saying "..." as they are all dead!

The IOC has put an urgent call out to the big cities of the world - who can step up and put in place a Games for August - November this year? Forget ticketing! We'll sell tickets for some prime events and everything else will be free. The IOC needs cities with venues that can stage or are adaptable for the full Beijing sporting programme! They are happy to let host cities stage some events (Kayak Slalom, Sailing etc) away from the main clusters, but they need a city where there is enough accommodation or housing for the Athletes!

Who will step in and save the 2008 Olympics? Sydney has said no - nowhere for the Athletes. Athens has said maybe - but they want to postpone until 2009. The IOC have said no way Stavros! Can't do it! Atlanta have stated they have no athletics stadium anymore!!! London have offered to stage the Games - in a big muddy hole in the east side of the city!!!

Who will step up? Will Tokyo jump in - throwing away their 2016 bid to save the day. Will Barcelona or Seoul jump in? Shanghai? New York City?

Citizens of GamesBids - which of your cities can come forward and host the 2008 Games??

Bids need to be announced by this Friday! Emergency bid documents are needed by April 30! A simple document outlining your available venues, temporary venues and accommodation/village plans. Oh, and a logo. The world needs a logo!

Help save the Games!

ROTFLMAO!

You know, I was wondering this morning if there would be a new contst after 2018 wound-up. And the 2008 emergency idea actually occurred to me! And I've always been interested in the idea of the fallback host possibilities.

I can lend my assistance and knowledge to anyone who might contemplate a Sydney bid. But I might also muse on doing my own one with a more off-beat candidate if I can think of a good one.

Sydney has already said no.

Hmmmm. I'm just hooking up a conference call with Kevin Rudd and Morris Iemma (NSW Premier). I've been musing if there are any ways to convince them to go back on their all too kneejerk announcement.

What say, Puppy?

Sorry, unfortunately Brighouse has blown it's major events budget on a new supersized version of the Pace Egg Play, co-inciding with the St George's Day Parade. Apologies...

The IOC has received notification that Sydney may be able to pull together an accommodation plan in time - the IOC has requested Sydney submit a bid which will be examined at greater depth.

The Helenic Olympic Committee has requested again for the Games to be delayed until July 2009 which the IOC has refused. Luckily the IOC has been able to secure the Beijing flame from the aborted torch relay avoiding any unpleasantries with the Greeks.

The IOC has publicly approached South Korea, who at time of posting were staging an emergency conference to determine if Seoul could step in. Observers believe the SKOC will refuse to stage the games after investing heavily on a future Winter Games.

The global media awaits with baited breath for the announcement of candidate cities.

Team Puppy has recieved authorisation from the Japanese Olympic Committee (after fine work on their Aomori 2018 campaign) to put forward their candidate for 2008 -

In what may be perceived as a back handed offer, the City of Osaka have stated they will be happy to submit a bid for the 2008 Games - after the controversy surrounding their original candidacy.

Osaka offers a fully formed plan - all venues in the immediate urban area and in the neighbouring cities of Kobe and Kyoto. Only the whitewater kayak will be hosted elsewhere - poetically that event will be staged in Karuizawa - also a host during the Tokyo 1964 Games and the Nagano 1998 Games.

Osaka is nearing the completion of a new residential precinct near the INTEX centre which will be converted to an Olympic Village. Satellite cities will also feature accomodationsofr athletes.

More details will be announced shortly.

Very interesting storyline ! The only thing is the contests are just close to each other, one after another. At this rate, we will have 12-14 competitions a year !

We have had better turn outs recently - the comps are getting bigger and more professional with better looking bid books and higher voter numbers.

If we are doing too many I'd expect the quality and involvement numbers to drop. There was a drop for the 2018 comp that just ended - but the winter comps always have lower turnouts. This comp should be of interest to quite a few people as 'emergency host' threads (remember before Athens!!) went for dozens of pages.

Already we have Osaka and Berlin, and I am sure Roltel will turn out a Sydney bid as the temptation to do one will just eat away at him... :)

So my question is - can we expect an NYC bid from you? Meadowlands for athletics?

Join in - this could be fun.

By the way - since this is an 'emergency' bid, the athletics does not have to be staged in the main stadium. You could stage athletics in a 20,000- 40,000 seat venue and have the ceremonies in a larger football only venue. This comp is about practicality and absolutely no additional or new venues - adapting your city and surrounds...

You are not just going to turn down any application based on number. I would suggetsed a team of scrutinizers to be approved and look into which application rightly qualifies or not. Notwithstanding you can be a member or head of such team.

I for one would like to consider it to be techncally examined with little sentiment so that it can go all the way free from most negative criticism.

Nice use of Stuttgart's 2012 logo.

I know its not origional, but in the context of Barcelona it goes with the idea of the city and culture. Plus consent has been given by the stuggart bid team for its use

News Flash

SYDNEY: April 15. AAP: Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, NSW Premier Morris Iemma and Catholic Archbishopm of Sydney Cardinal George Pell have confirmed they have initiated talks with the Vatican to leverage the upcoming World Youth Day in Sydney in July to come to the aid of the stricken International Olympic Committee as it struggles to find a host to take over this year's Olympic Games.

Cardinal Pell said this year's World Youth Day, during which Pope Benedict XVI will travel to the Harbour City, would be dedicated to the memory of the tragic loss of the population of Beijing.

He said organisers had also discussed offering the services of Sydney to organise a "tribute" games for Beijing, and that the Vatican was open to the notion of helping provide an updated Olympic Village for the city, to also serve as an accomodation centre for the millions of Cartholic pilgrims already due to travel to thev Australian city in July.

The cardinal, PM and Premier declined to elabrotate further at this stage "until we have the blessings of the Holy Father"

Come on Jeremie - we all know this is just an attempt by the Parisian mayor to throw the scent off the bid that the French will obviously submit just before the deadline - a bid I have under good authority you are mulling over leading as we speak!

What could be a sweeter revenge than to show up those Londoners right before their big party!? And as we already know - London have offered to stage the Games but want to use temporary stands out at the under construction East London Olympic Park. The IOC have no thanks. They want some concrete - not mud.

Oh and James - no. To whatever you ever say - no.

SYDNEY READY TO ``GRIN AND BEAR IT''

Sydney, April 15, AAP: NSW Premier Morris Iemma today said Sydneysiders were `ready to grin and bear it'' if their city is chosen to step in and host this year's Olympic Games in the wake of the Beijing tragedy.

Speaking to reporters outside State Parliament House, Mr iemma said Sydneysiders were now ``well used to the inconveniences that go hand-in-hand with being a world class city''.

``Sydneysiders have shown a remarkable ability to put up with anything that gets thrown their way over the past years,'' the Premier said.

``In 2000, the Olympics were a cinch. The place has never worked so well before or since.

``Since then, the citizens of this great city have got used to overcrowded and inefficient public transport, rubbing shoulders with smelly foreigners from God know's where, having to be `alert but not alarmed' _ and dobbing in any suspicious activities _ at security risks and leaving their cars at home with the price of petrol rising by the week.

``And just last year, when we hosted the APEC Summit, our good citizens took the closure of the CBD and the erection of monstrous barricades through our most busy city streets in their stride.

``In fact, we still have those barricades in storage. They'll come in handy if the IOC gives us the nod.''

The upcoming Catholic World Youth Day in July was another inconvenience that Sydney's population were ready to shrug their shoulders and put up with, Mr Iemma said.

``There're so used to having the place locked down into an armed camp now they won't even notice it,'' he said.

``And the road closures and barricades we put in place for the Pope will be able to stay in place for another few months to deal with the Olympics, saving us a lot of time and effort and money. It's a win-win situation!

``If workers complain they're inconvenienced and unable to get to their work between July and October, they're just being un-Australian!''

Mr Iemma candidly admitted that negotiations with other States were the main sticking point in Sydney's emergency hosting plan.

``We're finding it hard to get the Melburnians on-board. They're screaming Blue Murder that Sin City might be getting a second guernsey,'' he said.

``We're talking to Ron Walker and John Brumby now with a view to working out a deal. Let's just say that if they accept this, we might turn a blind eye to their upstart pretensions to holding the World Cup Final at the `G' (Melbourne Cricket Ground) come 2018.''

Mr Iemma was more guarded about what many international and inter-State commentators see as Sydney's sticking point _ how to house the expected 12,000 athletes and officials an Olympics would bring.

``Put it this way,'' the Premier said, ``Randwick Racecourse and Centennial Park next door are going to be a big muddy mess when 100,000-plus odd Roman Catholics trample through there in July.

``A few wooden rail sleepers and surplus demountable classrooms should be able to cover that up for a few months until we can lay new grass in November.

``Failing that, the site of the old Prince Henry Hospital site being redeveloped at Little Bay may be able to be quickly convereted to an emergency village in time. We can't commit to that, however, until the developers show where their loyalties lay by the size of their campaign donations.''

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has been more circumspect in his comments.

Doorstopped by reporters outside the Lodge in Canberra, he said it was ``premature to lay our cards on the table.''

He continued: ``All I'll say is what I said to that IOC President chappie, Jack Frog, or whatever _ my name's Kevin, I'm from Australia, and I'm here to help!

``And to our friends in China, Tibet and Xingiang, let me just say _ `Xie Xie'!''

MELBOURNE TO SYDNEY - HOW CAN WE HELP?

Victorian Premier John Brumby made a highly diplomatic and applauded move this afternoon by stating that the city of Melbourne would not stand in the way of Sydney staging the 2008 Olympic Games.

"There is a greater need here" Brumby stated to a packed media scrum. "While I believe Melbourne would be able to host the Games in the timeframe allowed, we concede as the main entry point for visitors, Sydney does have the edge."

Brumby extended full use of Melbourne's facilities for the 2008 Games - offering to stage the preliminary Volleyball, Football, Baseball, Softball and Basketball events - freeing up the Sydney venues for other events.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma has welcomed any assistance and will seek IOC approval to stage some sporting events (albeit no finals) down South.

"With Melbourne's world class venues complementing our own, we can guarantee the Games will be staged in the greatest sporting arenas in the world. I can easily see Melburnians enjoying multiple sporting events throughout the city as Sydney does the same. We will talk".

The Australian Olympic Committee has voted to fully support the Sydney candidacy.
