The top contenders are without a doubt: Houston, Dallas, Washington DC, and Miami.

Possible contenders are: New Orleans (once it's rebuilt), San Antonio, Austin, Charlotte, Nashville, Memphis, Tampa, and Raleigh/Durham.

Cities with no chance: Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Greensboro, Knoxville, cities in Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and South Carolina.

As far as venues go: well, Houston, Dallas, Washington DC, and Tampa submitted bids so we know what venues would be used. As for other cities....any large stadium or arena is possible. Realistically though it will be Houston, Dallas, Washington DC, or Miami. Those cities have the infastructure to handle the games and at least have some sort of international appeal to win....Miami and Washington DC more so than Houston and Dallas.

I would love another Atlanta games,of corse down the road.Possably 2028 or 2032.If the games would go to the south in 2016 the main choice for me would be Houston. It would be either a late sring game or early fall seeing how hot it gets  down there. They have some great venues. There 2012 plan called for a refubished Astrodome anlong with Reliant Stdium,Minuet Maid Park, and they also have lots parks down there.I think it would be a great games.

GET A LIFE.

The US south wont be hit again for a veeeeeeeeery veeeeeeeeeeery long time, and not just because of politics, lack of business interest, and social disorder and disarray, but because the SOGs happen during the prime of the ever growing hurricane season as well!

Care to be more specific? Especially the lack of business comment. I think people who work at the corporate headquarters for Coca Cola, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Bank of America, Wachovia, Dell Computers, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines just to name a few would disagree with your statement. Go visit Atlanta or Dallas and tell me you see a lack of business there.

As for Hurricanes......oh please. You are aware that any city along the eastern seaboard of North America is at risk for getting hit by a Hurricane don't you? These include and are not limited to the Washington DC area, the NYC area, and the Boston area. Even Halifax, Nova Scotia got hit a couple of years ago by a Hurricane. True, they are less likely to be intense the farther north you go but they are still at risk. Like i've said before if disasters really played a large part in choosing an Olympic host city then why on earth did the IOC choose Vancouver knowing very well an earthquake could strike anytime?

If one is to say that I am some sort of crack head, long dreaming, southern idiot, they are right  on 2 things I do dream big and I am a southerner, and proud of it. Cities such as Houston,Atlanta,Miami, and Birmingham grew on ideas that only southeren people have. Some cities have been blessed, and have hosted olympic events. So if someones says that the south isn't modern or proggreive enough, that is totaly incorrect. To say that the south dosen't have a bissness base, you are wrong my friend.

   Atlanta:Delta

              Home Depot

              Wachovia

              CNN

              Georgia-Pacific

              Coca-Cola

Birmingham:Am South

              HeathSouth

              Regions Bank

Houston:Several oil corp.to many to mention

I could go on and on and on.........

But more inportantly.......THE SOUTH WILL HOST AGAIN!!!!

Many US DOMESTIC businesses are headquartered in the south, but very few internationally recognized businesses compared to the coasts. I see you guys have mentioned Coca Cola, which is a start. But what else is there? .... ....          .......                       ..... ???

I'm sure our friends in Addis Ababa, Buenos Aires, Adelaide, and Bangalore (now Bangaluru!) are chomping at the bit to investigate doing some business with Wachovia!

As for hurricanes. Let me see.

OH YEAH. WORLDWIDE HURRICANE MEDIA ATTENTION EXTRAVAGANZA! Automatic turnoff! Don't you know that the foreign press just ATE UP the whole hurricane thing because of Bush's hesitance and resistance to get involved? That's the stuff the rest of the world THRIVES ON. Post-hurricane (post BIG hurricane, that is) tourism is undoubtedly going to plummet and is plummeting as we speak.

As for earthquakes, the south is overdue for an earthquake that will most likely be one of the largest in history because of the lack of tectonic movement in that area, while many places with frequent seismic activity only experience minor shakes because of continuing pressure relief. Nice attempt to do a cheap shot at Vancouver by the way. I'm sure the latest BIG MEDIA FRENZY regarding the BIG HUGE EARTHQUAKE THAT DESTROYED EVERYTHING IN SOUTHERN BC must have SURELY not affected its chances of winning 2010!

And people should know by now the Washington DC isn't in the south. It's part of the central east coast by being carved into Maryland.

Jeeze I'm Canadian and I know this stuff.  :o

Texas has a chance of producing a candidacy winner in the future, but the post Atlanta contenders have stronger cases!

Yeah, cheers, thanks a lot.  :;):

That's what I was thinking as well. I don't think many people would class Wahington DC as a southern city.

I think the main contenders for the south are:

Miami- well known, Florida is world tourist destination

Houston- made last 4 in 2012 domestic race, good chance of being selected as US candidate in future.

Dallas - quite well known, due to the 1980's soap with JR in it

Las Vegas - glamourous city, again well known around the world, only problem is IOC would be too happy as gambling and casinos would maybe steal spotlight from olympics.

Oh, please, get a life and go f*ck yourself.

First of all........the business I mentioned are internationally recognized businesses. The world's largest airline is based in Dallas/Ft Worth....I guess that's just something that is just not internationally well recognized. mmmm....yes alot of people interntionally do business with Bank of America, I saw alot of advertisements promoting BOA in Australia and New Zealand as they have a special partnership with Westpac.

Interesting how you just defended Vancouver, must be something you are scared about as well. Yes, the south is prone to Hurricane's and really Charelston is the area of the south you should be worried about in being leveled by an earthquake. Whether or not you want to believe it the media will have a frenzy if Vancouver is leveled by an earthquake during the Winter Games. What makes the South so different from that? What makes Vancouver BC being destroyed by an earthquake more classy than a southern city being destroyed by one?

What kind of power trip are you on anyways? Just because you are Canadian makes you smarter than me? Geez, and i'm sure you are the first one to tell everyone how arrogant and full of themselves American's are.

But imagine a night time marathon down the Strip. That would just be incedible to watch.

Yep. GO VEGAS 2016! DING! DING! DING!

Future Spanish bids after Barcelona '92, future Australian bids after Sydney 2000, future "Old South" bids after Atlanta '96 - should I start a post about future British bids?  I think that Edinburgh or Manchester should begin to think about campaigning for the 2020 games - I think that it will be our turn again by then!

LOl _ yeah, that's always one of the lingering effects of holding a succesful games _ as soon as the cauldron goes out, the hosts are already starting to think of how soon they can do it again! They're kidding themselves, of course.

Still, I'll be with you all the way for Edinburgh 2048! Hoots mon!

We haven't heard yet from Piraeus 2016 or Thessaloniki 2020, Nicosia 2024?; much less Shanghai 2016, Guangzhou 2020, Hong Kong 2024, etc.  I have a feeling those will be popping up any minute now.

I think the real problem with a Vegas Games would be keeping the athletes and probably some IOC members away from the Bunny Ranch.

The Vegas Diving venue:  Hoover Dam.

OK, here's a guy who thinks Vegas might have some Olympic potential.

Sports Developer to invest in $5 billion Vegas Sports Resort

Wow, so between Vegas in the south for a Summer Games, and Reno/Tahoe in the North also dreamin' for a WOG, Nevada might be the Grand Slam state.  Woooohoooooo!   :wwww:

crime is a huge problem in Miami and in Florida in generaly.

The only city in the southern United State that could host the games would be Houston - but it doesn't have huge international exposture. This is a problem

Isn't Miami one of the poorest cities in the States? It's got the glamor that places like Detroit and Cleveland don't, but if you look under the surface and get away from the main places then it becomes a whole different matter.

P.S. Happy birthday Faster. (It's mine too!)

yeah, Miami is a dangerous city in comparison to others like Denver, Chicago, NYC, Boston, Balitmore etc.

There is a huge drug problem in the city. Large areas of prositution, one of the higher US murder rates, and one of the higher crime rates in general.
