Sir Rols
Yeah! Relief is at hand: March 19 (Bloomberg) -- Beijing Games organizers are tearing out toilets at the three main Olympic stadiums after forgetting to include western-style lavatories. Toilets installed at the main Bird's Nest stadium and the swimming and gymnastics venues were all squat-style, a Beijing Olympic Games Organizing Committee official said today. Most will be replaced with sit-down lavatories to accommodate overseas athletes and visitors, said Yao Hui, deputy director for venue management. Beijing is using the Olympics to promote itself as an international city. ``Most Chinese people are used to squat toilets,'' Yao told reporters in Beijing. ``I believe the Olympic Games will be an opportunity to speed up the transition of cultural habits to meet international requirements.'' Mainad
I think everyone should be made to practice doing 50 squat-thrusts a day, like they make you do in the Army! Just in case you may one day...shock horror gasp!.... come across a toilet that does not have a seat for you to sit on!!!
its a bid of magic
Mind you there is taking the relaxing art of sitting down while one move's one's bowels a little to far.... http://edition.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/03/20/wo...ref=mpstoryview ejaycat I come from Manchester (UK) but a posher and more respected part than the geezer who says he has no problems where and when he deposits his numbers 2's. Er..excuse me,this 'geezer' never said anything of the kind! All I said was that I would not hesitate to use a public toilet if I felt I absolutely had to and am not particularly bothered whether they are French-type squat ones or English-type sit-down ones, providing they are reasonably clean! When you gotta go...you gotta go!! (Not that I have ever needed to use a public loo for 'No.2's' but that's another matter!!) And I don't know where you're from but there is no posher and more sought-after area of Manchester than the one where I live!!! jiejie
Ejaycat, just for the record.... I AM NOT CHINESE!!!! Merely an experienced, long-term expat lady (with iron thighs, I might add). Curious about that article saying that BOCOG will be ripping out the toilets in the 3 main venues due to lack of any sit-down Western style toilets. Not sure why they would be saying that, as Western toilets were included in the planning design. I've been in the Ntl Indoor Stadium and the Water Cube, and at least in the Ladies' Rooms I sampled, they definitely have thrones. Usually about 1/2 to 2/3 stalls are squatters, balance are Western. Can't speak to the situation in the Gent's Rooms, though.

Just curious if the Bejing logo is stamped into the porcelain on the squatters/thrones.

Ah, OK, I stand corrected. So, I have yet to encounter someone Chinese (and/or Vietnamese) who'll own up to the fact that some of them put their feet on western-style toilet seats and squat when they poop. james
If you know that you don't use a public loo when the situation is so tight then you can poo on your panties and, I guess that would be a better alternative.

jiejie
Ah, OK, I stand corrected. So, I have yet to encounter someone Chinese (and/or Vietnamese) who'll own up to the fact that some of them put their feet on western-style toilet seats and squat when they poop. Urban Chinese know full well how a Western-style toilet is used and have them/use them all the time, but rural/small-town Chinese don't. I suspect your contacts who won't "own up" are more likely to be from urban China, and more upper-crust, than from the backwoods. But it's absolutely true that a huge part of the population leaves footprints on the rims or the toilet seat, as they don't know any better. Combined with poor aim and a smaller "target" area, makes a big mess of course. This is why in a public toilet situation in China, if I have a choice, I absolutely head for the squatter NOT the throne, even though I'm a Westerner. At least at the Olympic venues, the squatters are all porcelain types that both accept toilet paper and are flushable. Be thankful they didn't decide to cheap-out and provide the infamous Chinese open trench type.

its a bid of magic
what if you have to take a really long one? squatting would be terrible The one where you strain so hard it brings tears to your eyes?? According too the link I posted ealier http://altmedicine.about.com/od/gettingdia.../infrequent.htm, this would indicate bowel inregularity and infrequent bowel passages. Hard stools caused by straining could indicate constipation. You need to pay attention your diet. Address any change or abnormality in bowel movement with your physician immediately, as it can be a sign of a serious disorder. Not had one like that for ages. Faster
James, your intestinal movements are not metabolic, they are digestive. Metabolism is the use of energy in your body, metabolic rate is how much energy you need to sustain basic functions. Learn some biology why don't you. Sir Rols
Ah, the old squats versus seating debate has come up again: To squat, or notMonday, June 23, 2008 Joshua Crouthamel A team of 8,000 employees has begun toilet training in Beijing in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games. The Municipal Utilities Administration Commission is educating their team in hygiene standards and techniques, Olympic knowledge and basic English in order to better facilitate international travellers this August. Beijing officials are optimistic about their ability to provide general services during the games, but faced a difficult decision as preparations began — should the city be armed with Asian-style squat toilets, or Western commode-style loos? More than 30 test events were organised in order to answer that question, and the frequent complaints squat toilets drew from foreigners have resulted in a mixed bag of portable potties. Though the majority of the new toilets will be for squatters, Western-style commodes will be available for athletes, VIPs and journalists, according to Yao Hui, deputy director of venue management. Lord David
Err, even if normal toilets were installed, wouldn't you squat at venues anyways? Wasn't there another toilet related problem with regards to the locals not being allowed to use toilets in venue construction sites?
