ejaycat
Those toilets are weird looking. And the way Japanese people sit on them - looking forward? They're squat toilets. I encountered them in Turkey as well. At the risk of sounding gross, they actually make it easier to wipe, and it makes you "go" cleaner because your "thing" is more spread open when you squat. The only thing for me, though, is that I had to take off my pants/underwear completely, because I was afraid of accidentally getting anything on them. Yea that was sort of what I was thinking when I watched that. Seems to me a woman in a flowy dress couldn't use one of those! I guess just another strange toilet habit across the world. I remember being totally grossed out in '04 about the disposal of used toilet paper in Athens
baron-pierreIV
Between this thread and the one about the toilet situation in Beijing, how low can we go? One thing though, the Japanese are compulsively clean people.

Yeah, in my guide book to Turkey, I learned that they also don't flush toilet paper there, you throw used toilet paper away in a little trash can thingy usually placed near the toilet. Supposedly their plumbing is such that it can't handle paper, the pipes would get clogged, or something. But when I was there I took my chances and flushed the paper down the toilet anyway. Nothing happened.
