Rafa Posted March 15, 2008 Author Report Posted March 15, 2008 Almaty Olympic Stadium The centerpiece for the Almaty's 2018 Olympic bid could be revealed within a week or two. The design of the Almaty Olympic stadium is currently being finalized and is expected to seat 50,000 with a permanent capacity of 35,000. The design has been kept top secret and is likely to become a permanent football and multi-sport venue after the Games. The plan to include a retractable roof has been scrapped by the architects in favour of a lightweight roof structure that will provide cover to all spectators. In a statement by RAFFA architects, the design will be unique but strike a balance between sustainability and modernity, while creating an intense atmosphere during the ceremonies. It is rumoured that the roof structure may include conference space which will be used by the media and VIP's during the ceremonies. Watch this space.
Lord David Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 I this to be a redevelopment of Almaty's Central Stadium or a new stadium?
Rafa Posted March 15, 2008 Author Report Posted March 15, 2008 A new football stadium at the same site, as a 50,000 seat athletics stadium is not sustainable. The cost of upgrading the existing stadium would be similar to the new football stadium and the football stadium has potential for future revenues.
Rafa Posted March 18, 2008 Author Report Posted March 18, 2008 Medeu Olympic Centre Following the launch of a new residential and resort development at Medeu by HOK, Medeu Village, the Almaty 2018 bid committee have confirmed that Medeu will act as one of the main clusters in the 2018 Games plan. The 2014 Winter Games bid included Medeu skating rink, the iconic outdoor speed track as the only venue to be located in this region. The 2018 plan will see a Media Village and possible two indoor arenas being located at Medeu, taking advantage of the potential of the area. The Olympic Ice Park in the 2014 plan is no more, with a new permanent venue developed at Medeu to host figure skating and possibly the preliminaries of the Hockey competition ensuring all venues are within 30km of the Olympic Village. A temporary indoor arena will be constructed around the 50,0000 seat Almaty Olympic stadium. The final design of the Olympic stadium is expected within a week with final approval of the building plans scheduled for the following week. Medeu Village
james Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 That color is scary green. Are they trying to camouflag those buildings from attack? Anyway, I kind of like the view of the area.
Rafa Posted March 19, 2008 Author Report Posted March 19, 2008 Winter Asian Games boost 2018 bid It is expected that the infrastructure program for the Winter Asian Games in 2011 wil significantly boost Almaty's chances to host the 2018 Games. Narrowly missing out on shortlisting for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, bid chairman Mo Rush has said that surpassing the benchmark for the 2018 bid should be a mere formality. New and upgraded venues will meet all IOC requirements and will be available for use well before the 2018 Games. We're trying to build the foundation today, so that the benefits of the legacy of the Winter Asian Games and hopefully the Olympic Games can be experienced as soon as possible. We think of the 2011 Winter Asian Games and the 2018 Winter Olympic Games as an acceleration of the vision for our city and its people." said Mo Rush A final list of venues is set to be announced, including confirmation of the sites of the Olympic Village and Main Media Centre.
