Lord David Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 here are the clusters of the Canberra 2018 bid:Canberra Ceremonies Curling Figure Skating Ice Dance Ice Hockey Short Track Speed Skating Thredbo Alpine Skiing - Downhill Alpine Skiing - Slalom Alpine Skiing - Slalom Giant Alpine Skiing - Super G Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Perisher Blue Biathlon Freestyle Skiing - Aerials Freestyle Skiing - Moguls Nordic Combined Nordic Skiing - Cross Country Nordic Skiing - Ski Jumping Snowboard Ah, so the Canberra Rifle Club will not be used for the Biathlon, I suppose.
Citius Altius Fortius Posted March 18, 2008 Author Report Posted March 18, 2008 Ah, so the Canberra Rifle Club will not be used for the Biathlon, I suppose. I think a new "Nordic Skiing/Biathlon Centre" in Perisher Blue would have a bigger legacy than a course in Canberra - furthermore I suppose snow is more likely in Perisher Blue than Canberra...

Citius Altius Fortius Posted March 18, 2008 Author Report Posted March 18, 2008 Some times the impossible can happen if you want it hard enough. When I was chosen for the Australian short track skating team for Australia at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, many people said it was impossible for me to get a medal. When I made the final, still many people didn't rate me as a realistic chance. But there was no way I was going to give up. The result is history. I was the Last Man Standing. I became Australia's first ever Winter Olympics Gold Medallist. Yes, I was lucky, but I'd also been dedicated to making that Olympic final. I never stopped believing in myself. Many people now say that it is impossible for Australia to host a Winter Olympic Games. That we are not a winter sports nation. Well, I say, bugger that! We will try hard, we will work hard, we will strive with all we've got to prove them wrong. Nothing is impossible! It's the Australian way. I ask you all to help make the impossible possible. Help us bring the Olympic Winter Games to our beautiful capital city Down Under. Help us make history. Vote 1 Canberra! Steven Bradbury
Kaufy Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 In fairness, I think a country wanting to hold a winter olympics must have a credible Olympic Winter Team.. If we look back at the recent Olympics, looking at what the host nation achieved 1994 Lillehammer; Norway - 10 Golds 1998 Nagano; Japan - 5 Golds 2002 Salt Lake City; U.S.A. - 10 Golds 2006 Turin; Italy - 5 Golds (Canada achieved 7 Gold medals, host of the 2010 Games) ... so we see that the hosts have always done relatively well, and these countries; Italy, Norway, U.S., Canada and to a lesser extent Japan, successfully score well during Winter Olympics. So I`m not sure if Australia has the pedigree to host the Winter Games on those grounds.

Well, Canada didn't win a single gold medal in Montreal - I think it is not a matter how many gold medals won a country, but if a country is able to host great games and Aussies are very hospitable and they love sports in all kinds - you can be sure that Canberra 2018 would become a great success!
Sir Rols Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 i cant actually recall the last time snow actually fell in Canberra city. Oh, the city indeed gets snow a few times a year. It may not stay on the ground for long, and it's never heavy, but it's common to see a few days of Canberra dusted in white each winter.

As in snow on the C1 plated car sitting in the parliament house carpark?
Sir Rols Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 IN the actual city though? As in snow on the C1 plated car sitting in the parlierment house carpark? Yep. I've got a lot of friends and colleagues who live there (in the press gallery), and often complain about the odd snow fall and cold in winter. A bit like what also happens in the Blue Mountains for Sydney or the Dandenongs for Melbourne, it's a semi-regular, semi-yearly novelty weather event. Bureau of Meteorology says Canberra Airport averages two days with snow each year. Parliament House 2005 Bruce Stadium 2000

True, but there is the idea of shipping in snow or using artificial snow. It will also bring some of the winter feel close to the city (Well, more of it).
Citius Altius Fortius Posted March 30, 2008 Author Report Posted March 30, 2008 True, but there is the idea of shipping in snow or using artificial snow. It will also bring some of the winter feel close to the city (Well, more of it). Of course you can do this, but I wanted a legacy of the "snow-venues" - therefore I decided that it is better to expand the Winter Sport strongholds of Australia than to built many new venues in Canberra itself... It is a pitty that the winter sports resorts of Victoria are a little bit too far away from Canberra and are situated on the other side of the mountain range (out of the view from Thredbo, Perisher Blue and Canberra) - otherwise I had linked the ski resorts of Victoria and NSW... (I hope you understand what I mean)
Citius Altius Fortius Posted April 6, 2008 Author Report Posted April 6, 2008 After the letter of Steve Bradbury we have the honour to publish a support letter of Alisa Camplin! Ladies and Gentleman,When I carried the Australian Flag during the Opening Ceremony in Torino it was one of the proudest moments of my life. As I drank in all the colour, pageantry and emotion, I thought to myself: Wouldn't it be great to carry the Olympic Flag into the stadium during the Opening Ceremony back home in Oz? It was a dream then. I really never thought it would happen. But now we have a chance. I support the bid of Canberra with all my heart - Australia would be a fantastic host and we would welcome the youth of the world to the Winter Games under the Southern Cross. I would love to show my fellow athletes from the north that we too can stage a great gaames in our big, wide land. Let's give the winter athletes of the world a good old Aussie "G'Day!". Vote 1 Canberra! Alisa Camplin
baron-pierreIV Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 Question for our Aussie members, only! 2nd proposal for the medalplaza I'm an honorary Aussie (since I am citizen of the world) so my pick is #2. However, CAF, it is so Lady of the Lake!!
Citius Altius Fortius Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 Dear GB Members,My name is Dale Begg-Smith, Canadian by birth and true Aussie by heart, now I have adopted the Great Southern Land as my home. And I want to tell you why I support Canberra’s bid for the XXIII. Olympic Winter Games in 2018. When I won the moguls gold medal in Torino in 2006, The pride I felt was indescribable. I experienced the type of support and place in their hearts that Aussies give to their sportsmen. And I realised I too, was now an Aussie. I started thinking of what I could do to to bring more attention to Australia's Snowy Mountains, where I live in winter. The best gift I could give my adopted country would be to try my utmost to give Australia the chance to host another Olympics, but this time the Winter Games, to show the world Australia is a winter sports country too. Therefore I ask you kindly to vote for Canberra 2018 – it would be a honour for us to welcome the youth of the world here Down Under in my new home! Dale Begg-Smith Dale Begg-Smith
Hobart Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 You have got my vote. Any chance of getting the curling moved to the Great Hall at Parliment House?
Citius Altius Fortius Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 You have got my vote. Any chance of getting the curling moved to the Great Hall at Parliment House? First of all welcome to our boards, Hobart!!! it is great to have here another Aussie - this time from Tasmania! Thanks very much for your support - it was very important to me that my bid for Canberra is well received by our Aussie members - I had been last year in Australia and I fell in love with your wonderful country! But back to your question - I think a parliament shouldn't be used as venue!
Citius Altius Fortius Posted April 12, 2008 Author Report Posted April 12, 2008 Thanks everybody who supported the Canberra bid - it was really fun to be in such wonderful competition with so many great bidbooks!!! :)
