  2. IOC: Games were 'iconic' and Rio could host the Games again 'We passed through tense situations, but the balance is very positive" said in an interview the president of the institution, the German Thomas Bach The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach said that the IOC would choose again Rio as host of the mega sports event since the city made an "unforgettable and iconic" edition of the Olympic Games. "Yes, we would choose Rio now. These Games were iconic and unforgettable. The Games were not organized inside a bubble, but in a city where there are social gaps and the common life took its course. That's very good" he said. [...] Complete article: http://veja.abril.com.br/esporte/coi-diz-que-jogos-foram-iconicos-e-rio-voltaria-a-ser-sede/

  9. Finally one more gold to Brazil!
  10. It was a very emotional moment! I felt so happy seeing all the celebration of the athletes and the crowd. I was at a restaurant and everyone celebrated when the two medals were announced.
  11. Host Brazil set to face disappointing medal count Host Brazil is likely to miss its medal target after losses in judo, almost certainly a first Olympics without a swimming medal since 2004 and dashed hopes in tennis and archery. After registering a record number of podiums at London 2012 with 17 medals, Team Brazil set a goal for Rio of finishing in the top 10 medal winning nations. But with just four medals in the first week of the Games --one gold, one silver and two bronze -- Brazilian athletes will need to perform better to fulfill that objective. Italy finished 10th in the total 2012 medal count by taking home 28. Brazil's greatest frustration was in judo. Despite a gold for Rafaela Silva, it did not surpass its performance of four medals in London, earning only three. [...] http://www.reuters.com/article/us-olympics-rio-brazil-idUSKCN10O0ZH
  12. This image must be from earlier. Now in the live transmission the stadium looks almost full.
  13. Even though most of our medals are supposed to be conquered in the next days, we can already say that we are probably under-performing (if we consider the optimistic expectations of COB). The target proposed by the Brazilian Olympic Comitte seems hard to achieve now. Judo and Swimming were disappointments. We were expecting at least 5 medals in Judo, only 3 came. In Swimming we didn't get any so far, in London we've had 2. Now most of the biggest hopes are in the collective sports. Beach Volleyball, Volley, Football, Handball, Sailing, Boxing, Gymnastics (rings), Open Water Swimming are expected to give us some more medals. Medals Comparison (Day 7): London 2012: 1-1-4 Rio 2016: 1-1-2 However in many sports that we don't have any tradition we've been making at least to the finals (artistic gymnastics for example) if that counts as a evolution.
  14. From 2 days ago Brazil's Senate indicts Rousseff, opens impeachment trial Brazil's Senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to indict President Dilma Rousseff on charges of breaking budget laws and to begin an impeachment trial that is expected to oust her from office and end 13 years of rule by the Workers Party. With the eyes of the world on the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, senators in the capital Brasilia voted 59-21 against the suspended leftist leader in a raucous, 16-hour session that began on Tuesday. Her opponents mustered five votes more than they will need to convict Rousseff at the end of the month, allowing interim President Michel Temer to serve the rest of her term through 2018. The result showed Rousseff had even less support in the Senate since the 55-22 vote to suspend her on May 12. She is charged with manipulating government accounts and spending without congressional approval, which her opponents say helped her win re-election in 2014. Wednesday's vote will strengthen Temer's hand as he tries to plug Brazil's fiscal crisis. Critics have blamed Rousseff for an economic recession that could be the country's worst since the 1930s. 15. It indeed doesn't forbid the freedom of expression. According to the article 28, any flag and/or posters that aren't connected to a friendly and festive kind of expression is not allowed. Basically, the law signed by Dilma doesn't hurt the right of protesting and expressing opinions inside the olympic venues, but those with posters linked to any political matters or anything not conncted to the enviroment of the games must be notified by the responsible agents to let those posters out of the venues or get removed from the venue. So, people are free to protest and express their opinions but the law forbids posters of political/commercial/discriminatory (and anything not linked to the enviroment of the Games) character inside the venues and that's why people with this kind of posters are getting notified during the competitions. The same law was signed by Dilma and considered legal by the Supreme Court back in 2014 during the World Cup. Btw, the incidents of the so-called "repression" happened before the decision of the federal judge that now authorizes this kind of protest.
  16. The so-called "repression" on those protests inside Rio's venues is, ironically, following a law approved by Dilma herself LOL Law that forbids political protests in the Olympics was sanctioned by Dilma Posters with political demonstrations have been - as expected - banned from stadiums during the Olympic Games. PT members are using the poster "Fora Temer" and has been approached by police, which determine the collection of the posters. Otherwise, the protesters need to be removed from the site. This has caused the PT to adopt the narrative saying "we are being victims of authoritarianism" to play the typical victimhood games of the extreme left. The irony of the whole situation is that the rule prohibiting political demonstrations at stadiums has support of Law 13,284. Ironically, it was Dilma Rousseff who signed the law on May 10, in one of his last acts as president, before being removed. In 2014, another version of the law - then sanctioned for the World Cup, also for Dilma in 2012 - was questioned by the PSDB.
