  1. Q: Speak to the IOC who are so adamant on the timeframe of the Games. Not sue they would listen to me, so all I can do is impart wisdom here
  2. I still think the Brisbane Games are being held way too early in the year (mid Winter)..............this morning for example it was 6 degrees with a howling wind,....and this is a month after the Olympic dates! I think Sept 1-17, the first week of Spring would have made more sense and not be too late in the athletic year. You dont go to a beach resort like the Gold Coast to freeze. I was there last week and it was way too cold to swim.
  3. I think that is a bit unfair to the IOC- look at the next decade of Games....... France/ Italy/ USA/ USA or Japan or CAN/ AUS/ USA or Japan or CAN.....the IOC has swung towards super safe liberal democracies. It doesnt seem to be courting the more controversial and problematic Middle Eastern, Dictatorships, Communist nations at the moment.
  4. Nearly every person who has ever lived in Australia/ on the Australian continent has been indigenous/aboriginal - more than a billion people. The culture and traditions of those billion people are what makes Australia unique. It is no wonder it is showcased to the world in ceremonies. I am proud to be one of them.
  5. Don't think Australia has anything much to learn about hosting Comm Games or Olympics- we do an exceptional job every time. Most of those lessons seem to come straight from the Sydney 2000 playbook anyway. The one thing that was grim was the 'scenery' for the marathons and road races- what a shockingly ugly city Birmingham is. Look like some it was in the Blitz last week.
  6. I liked the contrast of the open, dry plains of Central Victoria and the grand ocean scenery to the gritty inner city of Birmingham.....what a difference. Good ceremony, again given a decent budget for some staging, costumes, performers and lighting made all the difference.
  7. SPOILER ALERT: Vanessa Amorosi for the handover segment (as in 2002)!!! Being the new budget model of the Games, I presumed it would be Dannii Minogue.
  8. Q: What happened to her in the end? I tracked her down to a Petrol Service Station North of Brisbane... https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-26.3417046,152.7307406,3a,75y,308.05h,92.91t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9j4bcXTp5i_IklCNkYKbDw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en-GB
  9. NZ is having an incredible Games in Birmingham (NZ topped the cycling for example, is second on the swimming)...This often leads to speculation! NZ could do lets say 2034 in its sleep (ie 12 years led in time)....not sure why it is so insecure in its abilities. And 2026 will show what can be done on a tight budget.
  10. The Comm Games Fed will sign up whatever it can get...must be a dream for them to lock in two after having no one for 2026!
  11. Q: you can see France, one of the most successfull olympic team on planet, letting an overpaid player from the most exposed and not-so-olympic sport light the cauldron in these days? It's a French ceremony, it is just as likely all the performers will be painted pink, dressed as alien fairies, farting glitter over the crowd. Or something equally bizarre!
  12. June / July 2022 have been packed with sport..... been fun a as a spectator!
  13. Q: YES! ,if you have people dancing they must be able to dance!!!!! YES..and if you are going to use volunteers to 'dance' on mass make it after dark, with lots of lights, colour and movement. Darkness really does hide a multitude of sins! Q: I've seen conflicting reports on what's going to happen to the bull. I hope it has a better fate than the Sydney Opening Mechanical Horse.....I stopped mid-way between Sydney and Adelaide one night at a Service Station (in Jerilderie) and looked across the road, and there it was, rusting in the Australian Outback!! https://www.tissaratnayeke.com/public_art/h6f54e3b5#h6f54e3b5
  14. Q: Understandable though, given that it was pretty much all downhill for Melbourne (and up to the skies for Sydney) after 1956 ... Melbourne is a much more liveable, and affordable city than city. It has much better public institutions like galleries and museums, better public transport and urban amenity. It will be Australia's largest city with five years. Sydney is becoming a grid locked city run by property developers...
  15. Q: Yes - these themes are certainly ones to watch and frankly what I thought was missing in 2006. I've always thought that the Gold Rush would have been a huge element of Melbourne's 1996 ceremony. I was at the Melbourne Ceremony, it had scale, it was lavish, but it managed somehow to have no story to tell. The Goldrush is a biggie, which led to the Marvellous Melbourne era, when Melbourne was the richest city on Earth...yet no mention. Melbourne had a World Expo, was Australian Capital 1901-27, hosted an Olympics- no mention. The fireworks were spectacular though- and I still felt I got my moneys worth.
  16. I really enjoyed that- thought it had heart, creativity, humour and spectacle....such an interesting contrast to the beach resort ceremony of the Gold Coast (which was great too). They invested a lot in that ceremony too- in staging, props, performers, fireworks, and the ceremony was better for it. I guess Victoria26 next time will be another interesting contrast- the Australian countryside, the Goldrush, the Chinese and Rebellion....
  17. Q: You really think the whole city isn’t going to be secured for the entirety of the games anyway, much less the opening night? Yes- but not a whole city with 100s of thousands of people in streets and grand stands over 6km of waterfront for starters......it is blatantly a different scenario. Securing a stadium crowd is obviously easier than a 6KM stretch of crowd in the open. It seems stupid to have to point that out.
  18. The Opening can't be secured across a whole city, the idea is just dumb. An incident at the Opening will destroy the whole Games. If they are changing to the Stadium they better hurry up, they have less than 2 years to plan the whole thing!
  19. The last Asia Cup in Australia was fantastic -the huge immigrant population mean that every team had packed stands of fans. Would love it here again.
  20. Talking about dates.... Anyone else think the Brisbane 2032 dates are too early? The Games would be on now, and it has been cold in Brisbane/Gold Coast. Brisbane was 13 to 17 and raining today. And Gold Coast is a beach resort, needs a bit of heat. I would have thought the end of August would have been better for a 'Winter Games' and quite acceptable.
  21. Just get Kylie to jump out of the box and sing a few numbers ...again. she is Victorian! And Cant Get You Out of My Head has featured in the last 3 Commonwealth Games Ceremonies!!!!
