  1. Actually, not. Maybe they are using it as an excuse to cut the costs of staging the games. The international component of the torch relay is too important to the Olympic Image. It sets the stage of excitement. Vancouver, very "bummer" as it is now, needs that.
  2. I think the Tibetian activists waited for the right moment to act. They were very aware that the Chinese were going to use the Olympics to reinforce their swelling strength within the domains of the global arena. I think Rogge's comments were more along the lines of "reverse psychology" than actually being serious. It must have been his intention to curb the horrific chain of events surrounding the torch relay. In order to address the damage done to the image of the IOC during so late a stage in the preparations for the Beijing games, he had to say something drastic that would not only attract people's attention but stop them from disrupting the rest of the relay. It was actually reported on BBC that The Chinese Olympic Officials were actually warned by very high profile Olympic executive not to have an international component of the Torch relay. Those people who protested 7 years ago in Moscow about China's human rights record dared to see what others closed their eyes at. Kudos!
  3. People, its times like this when I absolutely hate to be so frank. Yet, its times like this when it is necessary. So, I 'm going to be very fank in the facts I shall present now. Fact #1 :- The Beijing Olympics Shall be one of the most glittering Olympiads in the history of the olympic games. Fact#2 :- Bejing, by right should not have been the host of the 2008. Juan antionio samaranch ( who bears a very real resemblance to Elmer Fudd), in his excitement to award the games to Bejing, ( whose bid was outdone by the excellent presentation of Toronto) did not consider the very problematic and very serious social and political variables that would most certainly come to the surface in asking china to host the games. Fact #3 :- Dick Pound, by right, should have been the current IOC President. Juan Antonio Samaranch conspired with Jacque Rogge to oust Mr. Pound from ever getting that position even though Mr. Pound's devotion to the Olympic movement was incredibly exemplary. Fact # 4:- Should the turmoil surrounding the torch relay continue or even escalate, this will hurt Doha's chances because the IOc will try as hard as possible not to have another games with such negative anxiety surrounding them. fact #5: It is impossible to separate politics from sport. The mere fact that athletes represent their respective countries while participating in the olympics is the most basic evidence of this. -------------------- Rule, and rule well.

  7. let's hope that Chinese discipline shines through and that Tibet is released the day the flame is lit.
  8. I'm sorry.........It doesn't fit in with the surrounding environment not even in a profoundly "stand out" sort of way. I've been trying to curb my hatred for this thing, trying to see its beauty but it isn't there yet. Maybe it will be when fully completed.
  9. I appreciate the very articulate way you explained the whole mechanics of the roof to me. We don't have snow in Barbados so I wouldn't know. Nonetheless, thanks.
  10. Wow! So indeed my proposal for the "mecahnical gates mechanism" for the flam can indeed work. Study the photos of the aforeposted interior of BC place Stadium. Notice that the air inside the stadium doesn't support the roof. The fabric of the roof is actually doubled panelled so as to form "pockets" into which the air is pumped. So an opening in the roof where those pockets are not located will not cause it to come crashing down. The roof will only collapse if there is a tear in one of the fabric panels that form a pocket
  11. I wonder how many "afterthoughts" will pop up between now and 2010? I guess security is next in line hummmmmmm?
  12. Then use a next idea....dear henry.......dear henry.......dear henry! Then use a next idea......dear henry....use a next idea! Why not have External Pylon Tension Support for the roof?(not exactly in the fasion of Munich's Olympic Stadium but something along those lines but with less drama)
  13. If Vancouver cannot find a way to overcome this, while still remaining faithful to its original idea of an indoor Olympics, it will say something about canada and canadians.......and something pretty clear to. Figure it out
  14. Then use a next idea....dear henry.......dear henry.......dear henry! Then use a next idea......dear henry....use a next idea! Why not have External Pylon Tension Support for the roof?(not exactly in the fasion of Munich's Olympic Stadium but something along those lines but with less drama)
  15. No.....I disagree. Surely, surely, surely, innovations in architecture have evolved enough for this to be a minor problem. The ribs that I've spoken about are not impossible to replace. I don't think the teflon roof is actually heavy. In the statistics given for the Georgia Dome, it has been stated that if the roof was stuffed into a giant bag, a average sized man would still be able to lift it. I also read somewhere that the roof of BC PLace is going to be employed as a giant canvas on which to project artistic lighting imagery. If that is so, I'm gathering that there will be no light fixtures in the roof so the support ribs will actually not have so much weight after all. So the mechanical door mechanism seems to be , for right now, the only logical option. JUST DO IT Vancouver K?
  16. Well, what if, for the renovations, the roof structure is replaced by "ribs' that actually do support the roof frabric thereby cancelling all reliance on air pressure? I can't see that being a grotesquely impossibly thing to do.
  17. Since, as far as I know, the wind blows from the west in Vancouver, it would be more forwardthinking to use the side ( one of the two shorter sides) that is closest to the east? feedback.............
  18. Thank You very much Ken! Now, as is clearly visible, the stadium's shape is somewhat oblong in nature. Notice that there is a triangle of fabric smack dab in the middle of either of the shorter sides of the stadium. Even if the "arch idea" may prove to be problematic, the frabric in one of the two triangular could be removed first, and then the supporting "rib" structures that make up the two longer sides of the tringle could be replaced with much stronger support "ribs" that can facilitate the conversion of that area into "the mechanical gates" mechanism. does anyone see what I mean?
  19. to cfm......if you visit the site of the opening in Lillehammer today, I'm sure you will see that the everything else is gone except, of course for the sky slope.
  20. Proposal. here is a proposal that was inspired by the "mechanical gates" opening in so many sci fi pictures. Now Follow. Those of you who watch a lot of sci -fi flicks will remember that when a smaller space craft is docking into a larger space craft, the hold or dock of the larger space craft is usually opened by a "mechanical gates mechanism" of some sort. Now, let us apply that concept to a small portion of the roof of the BC place stadium directly above the culdron, which, I am guessing, will be located at the rim of the uppermost tier of seats in the stadium. After the culdorn is lit indoors, the "petals" of the mechanical gates mechanism open slowly and the culdron is pushed upwards through the opening, above the stadium and the skyline of vancouver. A part of the inspiration of this idea came from the Nikki Taylor segment during the Sydney2000 closing, when she rises on a pole while singing until she is just about under the olympic flame. If a small sloping or leaning steel arch can be incorporated into the design of the roof, on the uppermost tire of the stadium, I can't see how it won't work. If someone should post a aerial view of the stadium's roof, I'll show you what I mean.
  21. Maybe, just maybe, they will reinvent Lillehammer and build a temporary stadium in whistler? Then transport the flame Via Satellite to a culdorn atop Vancouver city hall. The concept of forward thinking just doesn't seem to be a part of Vancouver 2010....bummer.
