  1. The theme will probably be about Canada as a whole and not just Vancouver specifically.
  2. Some of the previous work of some of the members of the creative team... Jillian Keiley Jacques Lemay
  3. Judging by this press release, it appears that they are going to produce something more spectacular and visually appealing than the feared dancing beavers and mounties. And it will be pan-Canadian. Good start!
  4. Canada's program to be number 1 at the 2010 Olympics has a new head (Roger Jackson) and a new logo. News Release with new Logo I can't post the logo because of VANOC's trade-mark laws, but it is basically three maple leaves in gold, silver & bronze with the old 2010 bid logo font.
  5. No, that is the CN Tower. La Tour de Montréal is the tallest inclined/leaning tower.
  6. AskMen.com is a Montreal based website.
  7. I can't believe that five years have gone by so fast! The Sydney Games were a model of excellent organization led by a country known for their passion for sport and a city famous for the beauty of its setting, its landmarks, and its welcoming spirit. Sydney 2000 was a high point in the Olympic Movement. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oy, Oy, Oy! Good on ya!
  8. There are also whispers of Spain and a joint bid from Netherlands & Belgium. All three would offer very compact and strong bids.
  9. Today is the 13th Anniversary of the Opening Ceremony of the Games of the XXV Olympiad. One of the most unforgettable moments in Olympic history.
  10. I don't like the Legacies logo. Looks like Ilanaaq doing yoga. Or a Microsoft butterfly being chased by a shark.
  11. Legacies Now unveiled its new logo on June 14, 2005.... Story of the logo
  12. This is not a design contest, it is a contest to do work. An expression of interest to submit work not actually do the work. This is perhaps what VANOC should have done in retrospect. They cannot use the bid logo. But below is a proposed mark for the bid that didn't make it...maybe this is an idea.
  13. 2010 LegaciesNow - which will manage the sport, cultural and social legacies of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games - is seeking a new logo. See attached: 2010 Legacies Now Invitation for new Logo Design They used the bid logo because they were part of the bid, but will not be using Ilanaaq. So they are seeking a professional firm or designer to come up with a logo.
  14. If I am not mistaken, any FIFA WC bid would be a bid from England and not the UK as a while, right? I think it would be a great place to host the WC with a great wealth of stadia and passion for the sport...but the ugly head of hooliganism needs to be bashed in (so to speak) before FIFA will send the WC to the sceptred isle. A WC final in the new Wembley would be a thing of beauty.
  15. If there is proof that the Olympic Games can transform a city for the better, it is Barcelona. A modernized transportation city, a revitalized waterfront, updated facilities, and a greater confidence are the benefits. But on a dollar and cents level - Barcelona has become one of the top 5 tourist destinations in Europe. That is because the Olympic Games introduced the world to this city and then this city kept the welcome open. I've been to Barcelona and love it to death. When ever I'm in a bad mood or having a hectic day, I think of my time in Barcelona and I'm suddenly happy.
  16. I would say the top three African possibilities: 1 - Cape Town 2 - Johannesburg 3 - Casablanca
  17. Sorry, here's a link to the City of Calgary's archives. Calgary 1988 Archives The menu on the left takes you to photos.
  18. Well, since it was the late 1980's, the look of the Games was really simple. Mostly the Calgary logo in red or blue on a solid white backgroud or the reverse (a white logo on solid red or blue) and sometimes in colours like aqua, green and magenta. The volunteers wore a blue snow suit with bright yellow and white accents and trim (again, the late 1980's here) and the "medal girls" wore fake furry suits that looked like bleached out aqua blue. Look on the ice Look on the snow Volunteers
  19. I'd worry more about rabid beavers knawing the wood than termites.
  20. Architecturally, the building isn't that fascinating and it won't become an icon for the city. But what I really like about it is the fact that the building will almost disappear into the landscape of the waterfront. The focus won't be on the building but on the best feature of that location - the views looking north and west to the Mountains, the Ocean and Stanley Park. I used to work for a company located in an office tower in that area and the views from my office were stunning. The only thing I miss about that place were the views from my office on a bright sunny day. As long as the interior works and flows well, there are things to do and the views are sustained, that's all conference planners will care about anyway.
  21. I sit on a local business committee and we recently had a presentation by the people from Tourism Vancouver. The convention centre was one of the topics discussed. Their research indicates that when ever a "movable" annual conference is held in Vancouver (by "movable" I mean one that is hosted in a different city each year), the Vancouver conference attracts an average of 12% greater attendance than the previous conference. That is why the city is focusing so much energy on the new facility. Well, that and the Olympics. But another factor...in the next 5-10 years, China is planning on constructing over 200 new conference centres, many of which will be competing for international conferences.
  22. Ha ha...north of the current convention centre would have it floating in the water. The old and new kind of form a backward L shape.
  23. Yes, I believe that the general public can use the pool...its used as a community recreation centre.
  24. I believe that a pair of African nations had pulled out of the Games after having marched into the stadium at the Opening Ceremony. So while they participated in the ceremony, they did not compete in the Games. The most ill-concieved boycott in Olympic history.
