  1. Is June 6, 2006 (06/06/06 - 6/6/6) the end of the world or something tragic like that or will I just be cranky that day?
  2. Some of your photos are labeled wrong... The Sinclair Centre is actually the Marine Building lobby. The Sinclair Centre does not have revolving doors or a large lobby, but has an attractive central atrium with glass roof. The Marine Building is one of the best examples of art deco design and has a nautical theme in its decor. If you notice the clock above the door, you will see ocean creatures as the numbers. The Granville Centre is Harbour Centre and the former PWC building. Harbour Centre has the "UFO" thing on top (the intersection shot is taken from here) and the old PWC building is said to resemble a hair dryer. Granville Centre is actually Granville Square and is home of the city's two daily newspapers. There is an air traffic control centre and weather station at the top for the sea planes. The CIBC building is actually a condo tower on Georgia Street. The CIBC building has highly reflective rectangular windows. I think this condo is one of the towers of the "Residences on Georgia Street". The Bentall Centre is actually Oceanic Plaza and the Guiness Tower. The Bentall Centre has 5 towers - 4 built in the 1970's with white concrete trim and black glass and a 5th partially under construction with reflective glass tower with rounded corners. East Hastings Street is incorrect. Hastings has 4 lanes with parking and traffic running in both directions. I belive that is Powell Street. Powell Street is one way running west. The False Creek highrise is not near Science World or the Olympic Village site, it is in Yaletown across from the Round House Community Centre.
  3. Well, we'll probabaly never know. And I hope we don't. I think the Beijing Games will be spectacular.
  4. Seeing that there are only 2 years left until Beijing, London would not be ready. If a problem popped up and Beijing could not host 2008, the Games would most likely be moved to a city that had enough of a plan in place to take over on short notice. London would not be one of those options because they are building for 2012 and wouldn't have enough facilities in place. If Beijing pulled out tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised if Melbourne was considered as an alternate host. Housing the athletes is the biggest problem in a quick fix games and Melbs has the Commonwealth Village. But LA, Seoul, Athens and others would be considered.
  5. Are we talking about the Opening Ceremony or the entertainment for the nightly Medal Ceremonies? I don't recall Opening Ceremonies turning into rock concerts. They are theatrical performances that represent the host nation's culture, history and place in the world. What I'm reading here is a long list of presenters for the Juno and MMVA shows.
  6. Oh, and I hope that Celine, Nickleback and Sum41 all have fun watching the show on TV in their living rooms. Tragically, I think the Hip are done.
  7. For the Opening Ceremony, I would like to see a very pan-Canadian affair with... ...Cirque du Soleil working its magic ...the RCMP Cadet Choir to perform "O Canada" ...Natalie McMaster playing her fiddle ...Leonard Cohen reciting something about life/peace/humanity/whatever (he can fill the Yoko/Gabriel role) ...Measha Brueggergosmen accompanied by a orchestra and choir performing the entire Olympic Anthem ...and I expect Vancouver's music theme song to be a pop song and I think that Nelly Furtado best suits that. The major pop stars of Canada can have the Closing Ceremony. They have all been mentioned before. But Sarah McLaughlin MUST sing "I Will Remember You"...either as part of a montage of the 16 days of competition or as the Olympic flame dies.
  8. I dunno, looks like you got them all. Every time I try to get one, they are always sold out. Oh well, I have the free ones from Imagine 2010 and Bell.
  9. All those quirky speeches Samaranch made and Rogge can't live down one word?
  10. Nah, I think Izzy has more in common with Ilanaaq than Avrilinaaq. Both got roasted almost as soon as they appeared where as the Sk8er grrl from Napanee got a lot of good reviews when she first appeared. OK, someone needs to put a tie, wrist bands and straight long hair on Ilanaaq.
  11. So Atlanta missed out by not sending New Kids on the Block to the Barcelona closing in 1992.
  12. Does someone have to be world famous in order to perform at the Olympics? Hardly...the ceremonies of Games past are filled with non-famous people. I think this marks the first time a hand-over ceremony featured a celebrity. Anne Murray is the original Canadian Idol.
  13. I think Anne Murray should sing "Snowbird". While I'm not jazzed about Avril just yet, I am glad it isn't Celine, Shania or Bryan Adams. Now, they only have about 10 minutes and a whole stadium to fill. That means that they won't have more than one celeb with Avril, but there will no doubt be dancing or some other kind of performance. But what will Avril sing? Her style isn't the typical "Olympicy" stuff like "Power of the Dream" or "Reach" or "Friends for Life" or "One Moment in Time". She's somewhere between the harder edge of pop and the softer edge of rock (kind of like Ilanaaq's soft rounded corners ). I assume something new? Given that it is Avril and her style is what it is, I kind of imagine something energetic, sporty but kind of odd. Like hockey players and snowboarders doing choreographed moves and icons of Canada floating by. Oh look, its Avril on the CN Tower...oh, there she goes to the Rockies now. Lookie there, now she's at the Peggy's Cove lighthouse...now she's in an igloo, building an inukshuk. Where will Avril be next? Both Avril L. and Andrea B. will be performing at the Closing and both were in the Celebrate Humanity ad campaign. It just better not suck.
  14. Avril would be a poor choice to perform 'O Canada'. In fact, I don't think it should be a pop singer at all...it sounds better as a choral production. And as for the Olympic Anthem...I nominate Measha Brueggergosman.
  15. And that is the thing…Avril isn’t overly talented, she’s just popular. Her songs and style is rough and she’s kind of awkward. I admit I liked “Complicated” but it wasn’t deep, just pop. It is just seems more American than Canadian. I fear that once again, the chance to present something that is uniquely Canadian is squandered by something that could easily be American.
  16. Avril Lavinge will headline the performance. VANOC release Seriously...this is our culture?????
  17. Don't you kids hate it when the confines of reality get in the way?
  18. They will probably practice in Vancouver and then do a final practice the day before or day of in Torino. There is no need for them to spend weeks in Torino for a 6-8 minute segment.
  19. All that has been done before and much of it in Calgary and in Montreal. We need inflated beavers on toboggans just to make Canucks as angry as the Aussies when they saw 'roos on bikes in Atlanta.
  20. The theme will probably be about Canada as a whole and not just Vancouver specifically.
  21. Some of the previous work of some of the members of the creative team... Jillian Keiley Jacques Lemay
