  1. Well I won't get hopes up too much but it's encouraging. Is this specific for Munich or is RR still in play?
  2. If Italy is in an Olympic frenzy, I'd rather have a summer games in Rome than yet another winter one...if Slovenia wants to be host properly then that'd be interesting...
  3. Saw this at SSC - I think this is what is technically known in the legal profession as a "kick up the wazoo": https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-03-27/other-stadiums-well-ahead-of-gabba-cricket-australia/103639834
  4. That's very interesting - I didn't know all of that. If they'd succeeded in the new stadium plan, would that have been the end of the MCG?! It's the same problem caused by the opposite problem, bickering caused by not building a new stadium they wanted instead of trying to avoid building one! (It also feels like Queensland is in a similar position to the UK in its politics - paralysed by everyone knowing there has to be an election soon but nobody in politics actually wanting to fire the gun. Maybe once election pressure is off, the next government will see Victoria Park in a better light)
  5. There's much less chance of a door landing in someone's front garden if you use Airbus
  6. I hope you're right - I hope that as we speak there are meetings going on in private between all the parties, all the levels of government, Coatesy (love him or loathe him, he matters), the IOC, the AFL, Cricket Australia (they'll use it after), & the people who'd be behind a new stadium or a Gabba rebuild or whatever they end up doing, to try to come to a good outcome. It's just awkward that as @Rob2012 has said, the outcome that suits Brisbane best as a city is probably the one that involves building a world class new stadium I did get a bit more reassured when I realised that there's still over a year until the 2032 election would've been - I'm not sure we'd even be in the candidate stage yet. One thing I am sure of is that Brisbane will nail the actual hosting bit once the arguments are all done, because Australia basically always does* *With pretty much the only exception of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games closing ceremony mess. Let's not talk about that...
  7. That's very odd - after the success of 2000 you'd have thought the city would be on a high wanting to keep the legacy going & governing bodies would be falling over themselves to come...I guess that means Australia needs Brisbane to sort itself out, or get the IOC to blow up their calendar rules enough for Melbourne.
  8. No it's certainly not a fun read, but it's pretty important - & the Guardian is a useful source of non-paywall news from Australia. Fascinating tidbits too about the personal rivalries around the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games which I didn't really know were a problem, probably explains the ridiculous closing ceremony speech-fest. Plus it turns out that official website they launched wasn't official at all! I must admit I have thought that these were just a bit of teething problems, maybe a bit of biting off more than they can chew, but eventually things would get done & it'd end up ok, but reluctantly & sadly I'm starting to feel like there's no way they can recover the situation now, the toxicity is so great it'll just overshadow whatever happens if & when something does get decided. We're getting to the point where that (presumably semi-jokey) offer from the NSW treasurer for Sydney to take over might start needing to be seriously investigated...I still hope Brisbane can find a way through but if not there are worse ideas than Sydney 2
  9. Quite the dismemberment of the preparation so far from the Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/mar/23/queensland-olympics-2032-stadium-plan
  10. Crumbs, as a cricket fan from the less winning side of the Ashes divide, this really is a sad state of affairs that underlines the seriousness of the situation...I'm having to agree with Mitchell Johnson https://thenightly.com.au/opinion/sport/mitchell-johnson-stop-playing-politics-with-the-brisbane-games-c-14027825
  11. Funny, I was just wondering what Sydney/NSW (& indeed the city of Melbourne for 2006) must be feeling, since they're really the ones who did so much to earn the (justified) reputation of Australia post-2000 as one of the world's best host countries - only to see Regional Victoria embarrass them in front of the Commonwealth & now Queensland do the same on the biggest of all stages. If things continue as they are for much longer, there'll be a strong case for moving to Sydney/Melbourne if NBC can be bribed/persuaded. The host of still one of the best ever games, or probably the most Olympic-ready non-recent host on the planet isn't a bad choice to have - the parallels to 2000 for NBC are uncanny too. Home Summer games 4 years before, with the even bigger carrot of a home Winter games 18 months after - it's even Salt Lake!
  12. Which again shows why the bid process was better. Let cities decide what is best for them, with input from the IOC, then the IOC decide what would be the best plan for the Olympics. If the New Norm had been in place for 2012, they'd have probably told London to use Crystal Palace for athletics & swimming, Manchester for cycling, more of Excel (or maybe Brum's NEC) for the other indoor sports in the Park. I don't know what the total cost would've been. But I think we do know the Lower Lea Valley would now either be the same derelict industrial site it was in 05, or a Battersea-esque Wild West of tower blocks with no green space or public facilities. I don't think anyone would say that'd be better for London than what we got.
  13. I got the cycle wrong lol. Thinking about it it would be that way round because there would've had to be a tour this last winter. Jimmy is kept in a cryogenic chamber between tours. He is immortal - unfortunately recent events suggest we should've used the chamber for Alistair Cook... I can think of nothing more Australian than having all this brought to an end and Brisbane finally spurred into a final decision not by the Olympics, but by the Ashes tour An Ashes Test in Hobart? Will be a shame to lose the Bellerive, probably the most beautiful major ground in cricket...
  14. Great place, a new monument for the world's greatest street axis Will you be able to see it from the river/where the ceremony is though?
  15. Maybe all this will actually turn out alright, if it leads to a coalescing around Victoria Park as the optimal plan. If this has reduced the options to Victoria Park, a bad plan for the Gabba, a worse plan for QSAC, or no Olympics but still the need for a stadium, it'll hopefully lead to a realisation of what is right & it'll proceed - because as we say they need a new oval stadium whatever happens with the Olympics! I hope to see James Anderson (he'll still be around, you know he will) bowl the first ball of the 2031-32 Ashes in front of 60-70k baying Queenslanders at the gleaming Victoria Park Olympic Stadium
  16. #Shrewsbury2036 #itscominghome #itsnearlyMuchWenlockhonest (Seriously someone needs to get hold of all the sides here, only leave Coates at home. This chaos is more damaging than any decisive action would've been)
  17. Which is why the best system for awarding the games is to invite cities to create the best plans for themselves & their needs, then put them up for comparison & election to determine the best fit for the Olympics. The bid process, in other words. Building a major fully permanent oval stadium looks like it'd be the best fit for Brisbane & what it needs. For the football-obsessed Rhein Ruhr to do the same would be insanity, same for Britain (which is why we had such a trouble before eventually coming to the bodge solution that basically works now). The bid system wasn't perfect, there's always more that can be done on anti corruption, and the IOC should've been much more direct in its feedback to losing bids, but it's better than this system. Pretty much anything is better than this system.
  18. She put much better what I'd been saying about the original Gabba plan - it's a lot of money for not a lot of stadium. If you're going to spend a lot of money, get yourself a lot of stadium, because the current Gabba doesn't stack up against Perth or Adelaide, never mind the big two. And there shouldn't be anything wrong, even in the "New Norm" with a city that needs a new stadium whatever happens, & would like a high quality, large one to improve its standing, seeing the Olympics as a chance to get one & doing it. Without sounding too much like AF, I thought the New Norm was supposed to be about fitting new spending & building to the city, not just "don't spend anything". That's why that Archipelago proposal for 70k in Victoria Park really felt like the only one that truly made sense, and would fit the Olympics and Brisbane's ambitions - as I said before it's not like you're agonising over building something that won't get much use, any Brisbane Olympic Stadium that isn't the current daft plan will join Melbourne and Sydney as one of the most used of all Olympic Stadiums the moment it opens. Now they want to spend at least as much, possibly more, to get far less, and still need to eventually build a new Gabba anyway as even Hobart overtakes it...
  19. I think every time it's got into the public eye here by hosting something it's had a different name - so until they do the decent thing & name it after Cathy Freeman, Stadium Australia it stays
  20. Could they still do that with the fee, only to compensate NBC for an autumn games in Sydney or Melbourne? That way Australia keep the games, in a city that has all facilities ready & would be able to do it*, the IOC avoid a new host selection, and everyone except the politicians of Brisbane city and Queensland state keeps their dignity as much as possible. *Can Stadium Australia (I don't know what it's actually called this week) still take a track? Obviously the MCG can, & I assume the SCG can.
  21. The review meant to save Brisbane's games might well have killed it... what a sad mess. Must say I agree with the newspaper article up top - it is a lot of money (& this is easy to say from the other side of the world) but it's not hugely more than would've been spent on the Gabba, for something that surely would be hugely better. The QSAC option that they're choosing is the worst of all worlds. It's not like they'd be building a white elephant either, it's got far more legacy uses from day 1 with no need for wrangling than London. I've been hoping for the best for Brisbane all through but I'm struggling to see a way out now... If the contract is with Brisbane or Queensland specifically, then if they do cancel, could Australia move it domestically, maybe by bribing NBC with some of the money saved?
  22. But the thing that makes Australia special is that you actually have two ready made permanent uses for an oval stadium that can fit a track. London could only dream of having it that easy! What would happen to cricket if QSAC gets chosen for the stadium, keep the Gabba as it is?! Because it stands out among the Aussie Ashes venues & not in a good way. If Tasmania ever builds a new stadium Brisbane would need to watch its back... I still think the chaos will rumble on for a little bit then someone will need to tell Brisbane to swallow its pride & go for Carrara. I also don't think the Suncorp Stadium ceremony plan lasts past July 27, if Paris works it's river time. Or Surfer's Paradise PS - I have no skin in the financial game so it doesn't affect me what choices get made, but al I alone in finding this all a little sad? My earliest Olympic memories are from Sydney, with the Melbourne Commonwealth Games also prominent, especially the stadiums & ceremonies of both - they really instilled the idea that Australia is one of the best in the world at staging huge events like this, & it's so...odd to see this chaos. I still hope that what I thought when 2032 was awarded comes good & Brisbane can show the world that smaller cities and the Olympics can mix but I'm concerned by how it's going tbh
  23. This is surreal - it's like Twenty Twelve coming to life, someone send in Hugh Dennis! It does feel so bizarre & unexpected that they're having so much trouble - Sydney was so well prepared they had the opening ceremony content planned out before they'd even won the thing I just hope they can sort it out... (PS the winner is the Olympic bid process & any presidential candidates who want to bring it back. It had its flaws but there's a very good reason why they used to make cities get their plans broadly settled before deciding on the host...)
  24. It's a bizarre one - I thought they'd either get the same thing somewhere else for less money, or spend the same or even slightly more money for something bigger & better somewhere else. Not spend more money for the same thing somewhere else Wasn't the original Victoria Park proposal for 70k, that's the sort of thing i was expecting to be recommended, maybe slightly more money for a real lasting improvement over the Gabba - it's not like Australia is short of legacy uses for a large oval stadium...
  25. Eh?! A much bigger cost for the same level of stadium, just somewhere different?!
