3rd & 4th In The Medal Table
BethnalGreen replied to michaelb136's topic in Beijing 2008 Summer Games
He pulled a sickie that's all, and from then on it was known as pulling a Harold Bishop. I guess people have forgotten except me! I wish I had never posted it now! -
Well, your assessment was what Michael Johnson said as he was commentating for the BBC. In fact, he said that was what she would do BEFORE the race... He really does rate Christine O, by the way.

To be honest, I think I am just showing my age! That was a common term in my younger days, and yes it does refer to Neighbours!!! -

3rd & 4th In The Medal Table

Fabulous! That puts us 5 golds clear of Australia etc at the moment... Incidentally, the cat chose just before that race to come sit on my knee. Big mistake as it got catapulted into the air!!!! -
Apparently there were whispers with the other cycling countries in Manchester that we had 'peaked' too soon. I guess they didn't reckon on the GB team having a body suit that is the equivalent of the new one in swimming.

Angry Swede Throws Down Medal, Quits
BethnalGreen replied to Tatsh's topic in Beijing 2008 Summer Games
I've just heard that this Swedish athlete has been stripped of his bronze medal now! Bet he feels a bit daft really... -
It's his thighs apparently

I hope that Canada wins a medal in the rowing tomorrow, cos you guys sound so depressed! As a Brit I do understand completely. We've had our bad times as well. Wishing you all of the luck in the world for the Games as a whole, but especially in the rowing!

I know what you mean. However, I don't think I am going to get up in the middle of the night to watc athletics and swimming! I'll watch the rerun in the morning. I'll get up at 6 and will probably not move until late on in the afternoon!

I agree. I don't want people to get carried away! I am so looking forward to this weekend though!

You may be right and, indeed, the voice of reason here! However, it does smack of the Soviet era where girls were force fed pills to keep them 'young' in looks and body so they could carry on competing. I am seriously worried, and I am not American! It is certainly documented that the Chinese have followed the Soviet style 'sporting factories'. I find all that extremely against the 'amateur' nature of the games!

No, I'm with you! It's a great achivement within swimming, but I am sick of hearing about him. If the BBC go to the lengths they have for PHelps, god knows what lenghts they would go to for a British swmmer... Personally, I don't think it can compare wth a Steve Redgrave who got a gold in 5 games in a row - and there are others from other countries who have greater achievements in my honest opinion!

Beijing All Dressed Up, But Struggling To Fill Seats
BethnalGreen replied to mr.x's topic in Beijing 2008 Summer Games
At least in 2012, we are guaranteed full seats as they have promised to fill any empty seats with up and coming schoolchildren! -

Eruedan Memorial Medal
BethnalGreen replied to Citius Altius Fortius's topic in Beijing 2008 Summer Games
Can I put forward a suggestion? It doesn't necessarily fall into your other categories, as it doesn't show the sense of fair play or particularly the most memorable moment. Perhaps there should be a medal for Olympic spirit, i.e. those athletes that embody the true spirit of what the games really mean etc. For example, our 1 GB weightlifter who despite knowing she had no chance of a medal fit, let alone injured, was injured but she continued to compete despite knowing it was pointless. She cried and sobbed whilst she was lifting, was in a lot of pain visibly and got a huge reaction from the crowd. Her explanation imbetween sobs in the intreview afterwards - she had been training and working for this for 4 years, there was nobody in the GB team to take her place, and as it was the Olympics 'pain means nothing'. Watch out for reports on it. Her attitude truly captures what it really means to 'compete' (not just win) in the Olympics... There are plenty of examples from other teams, not just from the GB team... -
Eruedan Memorial Medal

I agree CAF that the medal should have the original dog in it! I like that medal, you shouldn't change it! -
Yes, they were!

The German Team At The Beijing Olympics
BethnalGreen replied to Citius Altius Fortius's topic in Beijing 2008 Summer Games
Well done Germany. You are off to a flying start now! -
Well, We know that we have to have 3 riders going clear in the jumping to stand a chance at gold. Realistically, we are looking at Silver at most and probably bronze! Hey, stranger things have happened though!

In terms of Great Britain, I think many in the media and the sports authorities (including the rest of the world) have underestimated our chances. I think we could possibly win as many as 15-20 Golds. If we get 20, that will be as many as the last 2 Olympics combined. I know a lot of people will put it down to the fact that we are hosting next etc, but a lot of this will not have happened over night so to speak. The funding has been there for several years. Take cycling for example, we are likely to do better than at the Athens Olympics (though not as well as at the World Championships). This has been coming on for over a decade., It was easy to see that all the hard work behind the athletes was paying off! My only problem is, that if good luck etc goes with us, along with the athletes hard work, and we convert the majority of our medal chances, we may have peaked too early and made life difficult for ourselves come 2012! We'll see. I really want us to be the top European nation but we will probably come after Russia. If we can beat Italy, France and Germany this time round, then it will be a highly successful Olympics. Even better still - beating Australia!

Aww bless you! Can you get an early night tonight? I'm not really expecting a medal in the swimming tomorrow. Tancock might do it, he has done well just recentl, but our best medal hopes are in the Eventing, Equestrian - probably silver or bronze!

So you took my advice then! I managed to sleep in though and had to watch the highlights...
