  1. The wikipedia page for Bids for 2036 Olympics is now showing the London bid as cancelled - and has the following quote:

    Quote

In a January 2023 interview, the Mayor stated that "2032 and 2036 are a done deal" and announced that a bid would be explored for 2040.

Anyone have any thoughts on what this could mean? The London team feel that 2032 and 2036 have already been decided (secretly), so there's no point in them bidding?

  2. Some thoughts on the opening ceremony:

It's hard to compare the ceremony to others due to the covid situation - however it did seem to fall a little flat.

Far too gloomy throughout. I think the approach should have been to start off with something serious or sadish and then launch into a fun and high energy show. This is the Olympics - it is a chance for people to enjoy themselves for a few weeks and have a distraction from covid. As tough as things are, it's ok to have a little fun every so often.

Having Osaka as the cauldron lighter does seem like a strange and slightly commercialised decision. From what I've read, she has lived in the US since the age of 3?

I've seen that people have been praising the drone show, and while it was cool - I was hoping for so much more. At this point, I think most of us have seen similar drone shows (on TV at least). With Japan being such a techy country, I was hoping to see a huge drone show on a scale never seen before, with exciting colours and incredible shapes. So to only have a short and fairly small display of the Tokyo 2020 logo and the globe was really disappointing.

I'm curious to know what they would have planned if the ceremony went ahead in a 'normal world' last year. Understandably they did need to slim the ceremony down, however, I think they went a little too far.

  3. To answer paul92's question, they are sent to IOC voting members, all NOC's and members of the IF's. Also, if there's some sort of private based funding in the bid race for a city/country, then it's possible that the bidding committee would offer such persons who have contributed significant amounts a copy of the applicant, candidate or both bid books. I know for sure San Francisco's failed 2012 and 2016 bids offered such an incentive for major financial contributors.

    Thanks :)

So potentially there could be quite a few flying around for collectors to snap up.

  4. Don't forget he's just capitalising on Ken Livingstone's success in helping to get the Games for London in the first place. It was Livingstone who initiated the move for London to apply for them and had the vision of how they could transform the city. It was he along with Seb Coe, Tony Blair and Tessa Jowell who made the successful pitch to the IOC at a time when most people thought that 2012 was a virtual shoo-in for Paris. I highly doubt Boris and Cameron would have pulled it off or even had the vision in the first place. Boris has done well in the run-up and management of the Games but he has been riding on the vision and success of those who came before him!

Don't get me wrong though - I'd would have preferred Ken to win in May. Boris does provide some funny moments though. Shame he didn't zip wire into the stadium last night.

  5. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

The parade and the rest of the ceremony have a soundtrack of British hits from the past five decades, recorded by David Arnold and the London Symphony Orchestra, interspersed with live appearances.

Featured pop acts will include Adele, the Beatles, Pet Shop Boys, One Direction, Liam Gallagher, David Bowie, Brian May, Elton John, Queen, the Rolling Stones, and the Clash. Some artists will perform cover versions of pop classics, such as John Lennon’s Imagine – with Ed Sheeran singing a duet of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here with a member of the original band. Others will sing their own songs.

So that is taken from the page Olympian2004 posted above.

Does that mean those of those artists/bands will perform?

Like David Bowie, Elton John, Rolling Stones would be massive. The Clash are all dead so I'm guessing that means all those artists will just have their tracks played during the parade.

And it mentions Kate Bush will sing - why does she make so few performances?

  6. Just as in the jaw-dropping Opening Ceremony a fortnight ago, the British sense of humour features heavily — with Eric Idle singing the Monty Python comedy classic Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

Del Boy and Rodney — played by David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst in TV sitcom Only Fools And Horses — appear as Batman and Robin.

I'm not going to care about any of the negative comments about this closing ceremony, to me and the rest of Britain - this is going to be fantastic! :)

(And oh so so very cheesy and tacky)

...just ignore Jessie J, Spice Girls, Tinie Tempah and One Direction....

  7. Pretty poor website. Especially the menu bar, tut tut - very early days though. Took ages to load also, same problem for anyone else?

I've noticed the Sochi2014.com is really impressive,

Oh and since I'm reviewing, Rio2016.com - It's all to spacey and big, feels like I've zoomed in to 120%.

  8. This is the first Ive heard of Heather Small a the closing ceremony. 'Proud' is the song that has reminded me of the London olympics for the past 7 years!!! So if they dont play this song I will be soooo disapointed, lol. It would be a real oportunity missed!

Oh I only said 'are we' as speculation. Nothing confirmed yet :)

And just noticed I posted the wrong video.

Worth a watch if you haven't seen it before - with a video as good as this, any city could win their bid. Take note Nairobi!
