I rather preffer "human" ceremonies instead all the logistic in technological resources used in London or Sochi.

In contrast of most of you I DO expect a ceremony style back to 90's.  Not all is about resources, huge budgets and full technology as seen in Beijing and lastly in Baku.

Barcelona had a too low budget and it still remains as one of the best ceremony in history (for some THE BEST ONE) because more than resources put on hem there were TALENT and ART... and Rio carnivals every year shows that in Brazilian creativity is one of their major strenghts....

I do not expect to top Beijing, Sochi or Baku now in Rio.. but a ceremony made with talent, a lot of creativity, few tchnology and a lot of people.... Mass ceremonies in the style of '84 and '92   WILL BE really great!!!! Technology is not all about .... you, young guys!!!!

If it's going to be like the 90's, I am all in! I remember watching the opening ceremonies from Atlanta and Lillehammer (on VHS no less) and being amazing. That is what first started my love the for Olympics.

That part of the roof has always been part of the aesthetic of the design. It's meant to let light through since the roof itself is not translucent in any way as past Olympic Stadium roofs have been. I read an article recently that when the ceremony director is chosen in early 2018, Kengo Kuma will work with whoever that is to establish whether the constructors need to leave a part of the roof cut out or space under the stadium or whatever. The article also said that the requirement in the second bid said nothing about a cauldron, but when you look back to London and Beijing, neither of those stadiums were designed with the cauldron in mind, rather the idea for the cauldron came afterwards.

Good to know, much appreciated!  I just remember reading somewhere someone in Japan was worried the stadium would burn if it's made of wood. I though it was a dumb concern. Anyway, I'm sure who ever is selected to direct the OC will do a fantastic job with the stadium.

I don't missed anything with the design, but what's up with missing parts on the roof? All I've heard was that there was concern over the stadium burning down because of the cauldron. So are those missing panels from the roof for the cauldron? And do people really think that they'd build a whole stadium with the intention of putting in a flaming cauldron with flammable materials? I think I missed something.

  4. I know I said that ban on Russia from the 2016 games this close would be inappropriate, but I didn't realize the scale to which the doping was going on. I agree with Baron, as long as Putin and the KGB-esque government are still in power in Russia, we can not trust them to play fair, and they should not be allowed to participate in the games. What's the point of having athletes and coaches take an oath before billion of people during the opening ceremony when they know that more than likely the Russian have been doping? With cheating on a national level like this, the only fair and responsible thing to do for the Olympic Movement, and for the athletes who have earned their spot at the games fairly, without the use of drugs, is to exclude Russia from all competition until they prove that they have changed.

  5. I think a strict action (= ban) on Russia could easily help improving the IOC's credibility in many Western countries. Lukewarm decisions like today will only fuel anti-Olympics movements. Why should the people in a referendum anywhere wish to vote for bidding to host a congress of cheats? That'll be the line of argumentation, and it won't be wrong.

Bach hasn't understood that he's destroying the brand like this.

That's a really good point. I think Bach's approach has been too PC ever since he took office. He needs to show he as a backbone

  6. I don't think it would be appropriate yup completely ban Russia from the Rio games, not this late. But I do think that Russia should be suspended and banned from competing in 2018.

As for the 2018 World Cup, I don't think Russia can be trusted to host the event. It would be I the best interest for FIFA (especial during their own corruption scandal) to move the World Cup else where. Possibly the U.S.or Germany could step in to host.

  7. If we're putting 2 and 2 together -- that appears to be an Anthony Howe sculpture. What does it have to do? Since Howe is the designer Rio has signed -- and like Heatherwick for London, for his unique style -- then expect (or at least that is what the Rio Committee has hoped for) for a cauldron along those lines. That is what that has to do with Rio.

    That makes more sense now.

So maybe like this, with the gas pipe running up the center

  8. According OGlobo, for ratings NBC wants the order of parade of nations in English, and not in Portuguese lol

In 2012 the USA delegation was the 195th to enter, in Rio will be the 64th...

    http://blogs.oglobo.globo.com/gente-boa/post/tudo-pela-audiencia-rede-americana-quer-nomes-de-paises-em-ingles-na-abertura-dos-jogos.html

I'm gonna have to call B.S. on this. NBC isn't stupid enough to actually ask the Rio organizing committee to announce the counties in English. They know the tradition. I would like to say that most Americans also know the tradition of the host counties native language being used for the Parade of Nations, but it's America... anything could happen.

  9. That was part of the appeal, but not the reason why it was done. The idea of gift sharing with the competing nations had been built into the built into the London bid (initially in the overambitious form of the Friend Ship). The "copper petals" implemented that concept and combined it with the related idea of "coming together in unity" which was expressed both in the merging of the five hot metal rings into the Olympic symbol (the first time the rings had come together from different places in the opening since Atlanta, I think) and the merging of the copper petals into a single flame in the cauldron.

Why not start a "cauldron of unity" tradition by doing something similar in Rio? The torch relay, for example, didn't exist in the Olympics until 1936 ...

I get what you're saying, but how are the cauldrons on Rio, Pyongyang and Tokyo going to be different if they all use the same concept? Are they all going to come together in the end to create the cauldron, that'll get old fast. Besides, that doesn't make sense when you consider the cauldron in the port area.

And I just had a thought about the concept of a "kinetic" cauldron. Isn't the flame already the moving component in the sculpture?

  10. by the shape and circles on the edges It looks like an incomplete "in cloud light". The movement form rings, so i think its a good choice.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTWqo5H-aig

-Any chance some pieces coming with the athletes like London? The spheres that are missing?

-Fire coming from the edges or in the center?

I was expecting something more like a globe

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5XB54AIT7o

I still can's see the cauldron being a kinetic sculpture. It wold be neat, but I'm not seeing it happen.

Also, isn't the concept of pieces of the cauldron being brought in with the athletes a bit too much like London? Once the Greek team walks in and we see someone carrying an odd looking item, we're all going to know it's the cauldron. The appeal of London'd cauldron was that we didn't know what the kids were carrying or why.

  11. Is anything known about the 129th IOC Session? All that is said about it on the Olympic website is that it is being held in Rio (for obvious reasons) and that the dates are August 1-4, 2016. If memory serves me right, the sessions held before the games usually discuss the election of new members to the IOC, and selecting the host city of the IOC session three years later, so this one should be the 132 Session in 2019. I know some people on here seem to have magical access to Olympic information that I've never been able to find.

So does anybody know anything? Are there any bidders for the 2019 Session?

For the record, I am aware of the fact that the last time that a host city was selected during a session before the Olympics was in 2010 in Vancouver, when Buenos Aires was selected to host the 2013 session. Was that the last time this would occur?

  12. A bit of necroposting but I seriously hope they hire Joe Hisaishi for the ceremonies. He's easily one of the best, if not the best music composer in Japan, Perhaps he's a familiar face for some of you guys who watched the Studio Ghibli films. He was the guy who did all of those memorable songs.

Hiring someone who worked in anime for ceremonies wouldn't be weird. Osamu Tezuka's son did the ceremonies of the 2001 East Asian Games in Osaka.

If Joe Hisaishi did the music for Spirited Away (which features my favorite musical score of any Studio Ghibli film) then the Tokyo ceremony could potentially have the greatest music ever composed for the Olympic ceremonies

  13. ^^ He retired in 2014, in fact. At least from Studio Ghibli. It seems he wants to spend time with his family now. So it's very difficult he could be hired, though maybe some other prominent members of Studio Ghibli can be involved in the developement of the show, who knows.

That's why I was secretly hoping... he'd come out of retirment again to do it. Maybe his son Goro could. I think he'd be a good fit since he directed "From up on Poppy Hill" which is about the 1964 Olympics to a degree. Maybe Studio Ghibli could be brought on to do the ceremonies...

  14. In a formal Plaza setting, in an aquatic city I supect a Fountain/ Flame set up....

So maybe it'll be something like what Sydney did with their cauldron after the games

Is That's Where It's Gonna Be After The Opening Ceremony?

Why would they move the cauldron after the games? It seems like a good place for legacy mode.
